Did you see that article on Yahoo Sports by Tom Haberstroh on June 20th, 2024? It's titled: _"A closer look at Michael Jordan's 1988 DPOY award raises questions about its validity. Has LeBron James been chasing a ghost?"_
It undermines Jordan's defensive player of the year award. He points out that stat keepers for the home team in the 80's and 90's had a tendency to fudge the numbers and makes it look like Jordan somehow influenced the stat counting of his steals and blocks, particularly in home games. He mentions that LeBron quote where he said not having a DPOY "stings" and makes a comment about LeBron "chasing the ghost." Haberstroh pretends that there are some sort of safeguards in today's league that prevent or hinder stat padding without mentioning how often players get an assist despite there being dribbling and several basketball moves by the one being assisted. He also didn't seem to notice how often LeBron, and others of course, get rebounds simply because their teammates stand back and allow it. He seems to think Jordan's DPOY shouldn't put as much distance between him and LeBron due to these "home based stats." Seems like more hacking away at Jordan to make LeBron look better IMO.

The NBA "media" gets attention for stupid takes. Luka gets overhyped and trashed almost in the same spin cycle. He got his Mavs, a not particularly talented team, to the NBA finals. Because they were on a roll and beat some excellent teams in the West, some people thought they could do the same to the Celtics. But Boston has a much better overall roster and several great perimeter defenders to take on Luka and Kyrie.
Luka did not have a great finals -- too many TOs, missed free throws, etc. -- but no other Mav even showed up in the series. He needs to cut down on his complaining -- he actually distracts himself, improve his free throw shooting and defense, and try to do more in off the ball situations. Mavs offense is just way too predictable and Luka generally just watches if he doesn't have the ball.
Luka could actually cut more and post without the ball -- just to provide some different problems to the defense.
My take is that they don't have enough talent to get to the finals again -- and that's not Luka's fault. Kyrie is flashy and skilled but after that you have Lively as probably their third best player. It's not that good of a roster. Remember they dumped KP in a fire sale after Cuban fired Donnie Nelson, and idiotically managed to lose Brunson for nothing.
It's not like Mavs had a vastly better roster than Boston and Luka just let them down.🙂

I like your channels analysis more than any other I watch, but I’m going to slightly disagree with you. Boston didn’t win, Dallas did lose. Dallas held them to a 101 average for the series which is 20 points below the regular season. In the playoffs, Boston had two games above 107 in round 1, three in round 2 and three in round 3. they had none against the Mavericks. Not only did Dallas hold them to 20 points below their season average, they forced Boston into multiple horrible shooting games.
The series was the Mavs’ for the taking, but the role players including the starters completely spit the bit. Dalla Boston was daring them to shoot and giving them open looks and they couldn’t hit them. Kyrie had more open shots that I can count and still below 20 for the series. It wasn’t Boston’s great defense to held them down, it was everyone not named Dončić just refusing to play like they have every other game of the season including most of the playoffs.
They gave it away because the were scared.

I let my faboyism override my common sense and believed Luka would up his game to 35 and Kyrie would get consistent at 25 but when that didn’t happen they had to lean on castoffs to score, Boston just dared them to shoot and that was it.
Even taking that into account, Dallas stayed close because they held Boston to 106 average but couldn’t score the extra 10 points they needed to win games two and three. Boston Deserves credit for seeing the weaknesses and exploiting them, I’m just annoyed that the media is all jumping on the silly conversation about how historically great they are despite the weaknesses in their own squad.
