2015 i5 iMac vs 2019 i5 iMac Comparison Final Cut Pro X

  • Today I am comparing my Late 2015 i5 iMac to the new 2019 i5 iMac. In this video, I will compare how Final Cut Pro X differs with rendering times for H.264 and Mv4. I will also take a look at the overall editing experience and flow. Depending on your type of work and file output you might not even need to upgrade. Both machines are stock off the shelf models with no upgrades. This means both machines are running 8GB of RAM to keep the tests as fair as possible.
    Recommended iMac for Final Cut:

It is recommended an SSD NVID and an i9 for 4k edition, if it is edited in an external SSD I prefer an SSD NVID with thunderbolt 3 40Gbps, more than anything by the bottleneck. Then you could take a computer or do it yourself put the mvme ssd as main disk and an i9 if it is a Mac 5k:)

Great review, although I'm not doing your kind of creative work very often, but mostly slide presentations and text. But this kind of tests are much more interesting that those who barely read and compare the tech specs. BTW I found this review because I'm sitting with a iMac 2015 but with a SSD. I'm missing a better graphics for those few games I play, but that's not very often anyway. I will stay with the iMac 2015 until a new iMac with SSD and very good graphics come some day in the future. Thanks.

I recently got the 2020 27" iMac and it wipes the floor with my old one. I've been meaning to make a comparison video but I haven't done it yet. The graphics and CPU performance from the off-the-shelf i7 one is off the charts better :). Final cut has been a dream compared to before. If you have the SSD in your it will no doubt be a better experience than my old 2015.

Hello there and thank you so much for uploading the comparison video. I was wondering , if when you bought the 2019 Mac did you have to purchase another license with all the software ? or were you refunded or compensated when you returned the Mac after it failed to meet your needs as expected. ( sorry for the long question )

Really interesting, as I am sitting in from of a 2015 21.5 i7 and thinking about pulling the trigger on a new 27". I understand that you wanted to compare like with like, but in specifying a new machine, especially for use with FCP, Logic, etc, an internal SSD and plenty of RAM is a must and possible as/more important than the processor. I would start with 32Gb RAM and a 1TB internal SSD and then worry about the rest.

How much VRAM and what GPU is in your 2015 iMac? I have the 2 GB card and the VRAM is almost always full. I need to run AE alongside FCPX almost all the time and that REALLY taxes the GPU and VRAM.

  • @pixmoproductions9207

Have you tried optimising your clips before editing them ? I find that when I import the footage I right click and then optimise the files into ProRes. It basically it converts/decompresses the original highly compressed files into uncompressed ProRes ones. Once you have done this you can use the full view in real time with no lag or issues. On my FS5 I don't really need to do it at 1080p but my 4K drone footage I need to do it. So I just optimize all the footage in one go. Unless you have a really fast iMac Pro and even then if your shooting 4K your pushing it you can't decompress the original files in real time to get the experience your after.
Try it on your next import and you will be able to then edit in real time in better quality mode, see all the details, some transitions will need to be rendered individually on the timeline to become realtime clips in FCPX depending on the complexity of the Effect or Transition :)
