Jokes like that can work, but the thing it’s extending needs to be funny in of itself, like the Sideshow Bob rake scene If it’s just… this, it’s exhausting And it was already set up so halfhazardly
Not to mention. It wasn't just a one minute cutaway gag. It was a one minute cutaway gag with almost no actual animation in it. Peter only tapping his foot for the first 60% of it is one thing, but Lois is completely static for like 95% of the scene.
Honestly I was smiling until he started singing/talking, like there are hundreds of ways to make a punchline work there, have him breathe then cut away right before he sings, maybe even have the machine die before he sings, you could even do something wholesome where Lois joins and play into the absurdity. Idk im not a writer, but as a viewer that's what would have made me enjoy this moment.
It’s just because of how long it is dragged out of nothing really happening, also I know the animation has been like this for awhile but it would’ve been funnier if he was more lively
The point of the joke is that he knowingly spent that much time building up nothing. If the machine broke, it would have been less funny because the whole setup for the joke was that Lois was annoyed with his karaoke phase, so having the machine break wouldn't be Peter's fault, and therefor the "Peter is annoying" setup wouldn't have resolved. And if the scene cut away before he sang, then there's no joke because, again, the humor is in the anticlimax. Now, to the uninitiated, "anticlimax" sounds like cutting away would fit perfectly, right? Well no. Anticlimax requires an actual conclusion. The point of anticlimax isn't to avoid a conclusion, it's to provide an unsatisfying conclusion. Also, why would Lois join? Again, the cutaway was prefaced with "Peter is annoying" so Lois joining would both make no sense and not really fulfill any joke format. Long wait, then she joins. How are those two things connected in any way? Long wait, wait not worth it. That's the connection. That's the joke. Also see: czcams.com/video/E-xhxS581Uc/video.html Except in this case, the anticlimax is the fact that you know exactly what's coming and it takes forever to get there and the thing is clearly not the big deal it is being made out to be.

I agree. The intro being long did make it funny cuz it’s like I’m waiting for the song to start and Peter did do some leg movement and stuff but Lois was so still and not blinking so it made it kind of awkward
I literally could have written this better. No puke in the sink, just an extremely long wait during the intro... that's interrupted occasionally by Lois' nagging.
I have to say I agree the joke as an idea is rather amusing, since no sensible chap would ever sing The Who's Baba O'Reilly in a karaoke... But yes the execution was a bit off, I would have liked it better if it happened in a karaoke bar filled with young people not knowing this song and being pissed off about Peter not singing but doing these nonsense movements instead.

Better joke if he said "to explain how i threw up in the sink, let me take you back to 1987! Our story starts with me, yes thats me in that silver coat over there, I was the biggest hotshot in dodgeball..."
I see the joke they were going for. It could've felt more in place if they made it shorter and put effort in to Louis's movements. Otherwise the joke itself isn't bad at all. Afterall, a lot of their cutaways are suppose to simulate actual awkward situations in real life.
The thing is it is a complete waste of time. I know they were trying to be ironic but it seems like a complete waste of time. I would have rather spent 5 seconds laughing at an actual funny joke than 1 whole minute staring at peter slightly moving his body to a song.
There's a 10 minute episode of Dexter's Lab that is just Dexter's Dad lining up a golf putt. That's it. It's like a 20 second loop that plays for 10 minutes
There is literally 5 jokes in this: 1) Peter's Karaoke phase, randomly having a Karaoke box in the kitchen 2) Peter finding an excuse to not answer Lois for a long time 3) The Who : Baba O'Rileya has been criticized for having such a long intro, when it came out and to this day 4) The length of the song directly tie back to 2, which is to delay his excuse 5) Eventually give the excuse, but do it with a song that will delay his response and choosing Baba O'Riley, referring back to 3 and 2.
Just incredible, You can actually SEE the frustration emanating from the person who recorded this from, I'm going to say Netflix? as Peter prepares to sing his song. Truly amazing stuff!

It inspires a reaction and that’s entertainment! The fact that I actually searched for this specific cutaway and found someone had uploaded it just goes it show it had an affect! To me there is a number of things that make this funny; the anti-climactic build-up, the observation that the quality of most karaoke machines are piss-poor and that you think this is worse than Conway Twitty 😂 there’s something to be said for Family Guy always sticking to its own rules and not selling out to the network’s demands. This in itself is something the network has then been able to package and market which is probably why they can get away with so many 1% gags. There is something very Dada about these jokes but they are an art form! Reminds me of Andy Kaufman which is probably why I enjoy them so much 😂
Honestly, I wondered how they get away with having copy written music in. Well, farm instead of fight could be a way around this without people noticing like everyone has
Modern family guy in a nutshell. “Jokes” stretched on for like a minute, just for the characters to literally say the “punchline” thus making it even worse.
I don’t wanna call the animators lazy since this probably wasn’t their decision, but somebody definitely made this gag just to save their already small animation budget
Yeah I feel like in the early seasons they moved more “human like” but now they stand still like manikins and blink once a minute. No disrespect to the animators cos like u said it’s not their fault but yh
I think it's hilarious the way it is. It's mocking the song for having an unnecessary long intro and Peter's dedication is also funny because he could have just fast-forwarded to the singing part, right?
@@Marcomanexists True. I find it annoying when people make out Seth to be a victim of how Family Guy is getting worse when he has the power to end his own show.
@@Ash_Queen16 he’s not a victim but if you notice, family guy has been writing increasingly stupider jokes lately. Stuff like the scene when Peter kills a whale with a forklift... you don’t exactly write a joke like that when your show is at it’s peak. I think Seth has just run out of ideas now.

There are tons of bad Family Guy jokes, but this one at least has something going for it in that it's a bit of a subversion. Like that alcoholic elephant one
The identity of modern Family Guy is their cutaway gags, not the actual story since they gave up story/character development long time ago. Even then, their gags are a hit or miss.
@@jaisotheunfathomablybased7135 It never gets brought up again with the exception of times they make him do dog stuff that is out of character for him. They even did an episode all based on Stewie's first words being "FUCK" but the problem was he talked before to people including his own family. It didn't add up the timeline, and I never could focus on the episode with that in the back of my head. This goes back to when I said how "they gave up story/character development long time ago."
This is what's called a shaggy dog joke. It's purposefully long winded and anticlimactic. The joke is that they managed to hold your attention for such a long time for no reason at all. It's anti-humor. It's not stupid or lazy. It's completely intentional and designed to fuck with the audience. I don't like shaggy dog humor, but I can still recognize it for what it is. EDIT: cry harder. Your salt nourishes me.
I feel like that's the bane of Family Guy's existence. Didn't know its humor had a distinct genre; I'd just thought it was dry humor that was executed poorly. A few of such jokes would be fine, but in my opinion, they're what the show depends on to make its audience laugh, and with them being used so frequently, they just get old pretty quickly, as does the show, ultimately.
Yeah, I've noticed that they seem to be intentionally making them last for a while. remember that one scene from S18 E1 where meg's boyfriend's head gets decapitated, and when meg comes to save them from the sinking ship, his head falls off again and Chris has to try and throw it back up? Here's the scene in case you have no clue what I'm talking about: czcams.com/video/eEMI0icwPHg/video.html&ab_channel=CorSal
It's not a shaggy dog joke. A shaggy dog joke relies on the floor being ripped out from under you, with every thread of the story being thrown out with the too simple punchline. This isn't a shaggy dog joke because you can tell from the first second what the punchline is going to be. The vocals are going to kick in, and he's going to say "yes." Think about Norm Macdonald's famous "Moth at the Podiatrist" joke, and imagine how unfunny it would be if, instead of the minutes of well written dialogue in the middle, it was just, "A moth goes into a Podiatrist's office," Sixty seconds of complete silence, "because the light was on."

Yup, that's me. You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation. Here, let's go back to the beginning.
Look my dad tries alright? Jeez.
I feel like it could’ve been funny if Lois like walked away or something, I dunno I’m spit balling hear but it just didn’t land
Maybe they have her screaming at him but you can’t hear her over the music and it starts when the drums come in
See that woulda been funny
Honestly, I think it would've if one of them was moving normally, and the other was a still image
Wait till someone decides to make a 10 hour loop of this...
OOOHH YEEAAHH!!
You mean this wasn’t the 10 Hour loop?
Nice
Lois isn’t even blinking. She’s a still image.
There's a 10 minute episode of Dexter's Lab that is just Dexter's Dad lining up a golf putt. That's it. It's like a 20 second loop that plays for 10 minutes

There is literally 5 jokes in this:
1) Peter's Karaoke phase, randomly having a Karaoke box in the kitchen
2) Peter finding an excuse to not answer Lois for a long time
3) The Who : Baba O'Rileya has been criticized for having such a long intro, when it came out and to this day
4) The length of the song directly tie back to 2, which is to delay his excuse
5) Eventually give the excuse, but do it with a song that will delay his response and choosing Baba O'Riley, referring back to 3 and 2.
This and when Carter has the excavator
Just incredible, You can actually SEE the frustration emanating from the person who recorded this from, I'm going to say Netflix? as Peter prepares to sing his song. Truly amazing stuff!
@@ChuckECheesesKid9000 Heavy sarcasm is implied although I didn't say I wasn't taking it as a 'good joke', The entire comment was meant to be sarcastic. but it's ok if you didn't understand the joke. My dog burping would be a better cutaway gag than this shit.
Reminds me of Andy Kaufman which is probably why I enjoy them so much 😂
Look in the top right around where the drums come in. It says "buy on youtube."

This is a terrific example of what Family Guy does best: Wasting the audience's time for a joke that wasn't even funny.
The worst thing about this is that he’s supposed to “fight” for his meals, not “farm” for them. Disgusting I tell you.
Omg I didn't notice that
Honestly, I wondered how they get away with having copy written music in. Well, farm instead of fight could be a way around this without people noticing like everyone has
@@Jonymankitty that wouldn't get them around the copyright, it's still blatant thievery, they just have the money to pay whoever to shut them up

The intro to the song is actually that long.

I dought it costs a Million dollars to make one episode
@@Mr.clean666 it does cost a million
NoNO NO NO
Most of it goes to voice acting and the writers
I like to think that a lot of that money probably goes into cocaine or other drugs because many people in the film industry often use them. A professor of mine who worked at Cinecittà (Rome) told me that even, in the budget of a film/TV series they were making, they were also asked to count the money needed to buy cocaine.
The “I bought this song license some time ago and it’s about to expire, so I’m going to use it, even if it makes no sense” cutaway.
This is what happens when every episode of every show ever has to have a runtime of a multiple of 11.

It's still a crappy joke though.
The vocals are going to kick in, and he's going to say "yes." Think about Norm Macdonald's famous "Moth at the Podiatrist" joke, and imagine how unfunny it would be if, instead of the minutes of well written dialogue in the middle, it was just,
"A moth goes into a Podiatrist's office,"
Sixty seconds of complete silence,
"because the light was on."
