All my other Olympics videos were taken off CZcams so this video may be on the chopping block. I have some videos on Vimeo under this same handle.
I was in my apartment in Manhattan just across the East River from Randall's Island and the Reebok meet at Icahn Stadium when Bolt shocked us all with his 9.72 WR. It was weird for him to be in a 100 at all back then. Less than three miles from where I was standing, I missed a surprising WR (and next-level progression of a legendary season and career) in person. Look at how I'm trying to connect myself to Bolt by posting this video and telling that boring story, like I was part of it all. Shameless. Like I was telling Ato the other day, . . .
Includes profiles and buildup and after-race assessment of each round.
Time-stamp (click to go to that point), event, round, time (reaction time/wind reading):
    0:03:45 100 Heat 1 Bolt 10.20 (0.186/-0.2w)

1:05:30 4x100 Heat 1 Trinidad & Tobago (Bledman, Burns, Armstrong, Thompson) 38.26 Japan 38.52 Netherlands 38.87 Brazil 39.02 (USA DQ dropped baton Martin, Padgett, Patton, Gay -- Those first two guys consistently ran great in those relays leading up to and including that race. I always felt worst for them. A winning effort on a losing team.)
    1:13:31 4x100 Heat 2 Jamaica (Thomas, Frater, Carter, Powell) 38.31 Canada 38.77 Germany 38.93 China 39.13

Olympics.com posted a June 27, 2023 letter from Usain Bolt:
    olympics.com/en/news/usain-bo...
"Usain Bolt: Beijing 2008 is where everything changed for me"
"Ahead of the Winter Olympics in 2022, the eight-time Olympic champion reflects on how the last Olympics in China completely changed his life."

In 2008 no one had ever witnessed anything like Bolt. Instead of the huffing, puffing, and glaring of previous sprinters, Usain was dancing and joking and jogging to records.
Bolt is the greatest ever, not because he broke world records but because he broke world records incidentally, simply as a byproduct of winning a race. It's something that Noah Lyles & the rest of the pretenders don't comprehend.
Year after year, Olympics after Olympics, Championships after Championships. In BOTH sprint events, he was supremely dominant.
And he did it against the fastest men in recorded history
THAT'S why he's the GOAT. And that's why no one competing today is anywhere close to his greatness. Nor will they ever be.

I was thinking the exact same thing after he made those comments. Speaking of that, I'm really glad that Bolt ran a proper 100M a year later in Berlin, because that 9.69 that he ran in Beijing, was such an easy 9.69 lol. Bolt was such an unreal athlete, his 4 fastest 100M times are 9.72, 9.69, 9.63, and an insane 9.58. What's funny is, Bolt was so dominant and broke so many records, that a lot of people don't even talk much about his 9.63 in 2012, because it wasn't a World Record lol.

Thanks for posting this, I watched all the rounds back in 2008 on British TV, nice to get the US perspective. At the time I felt not enough was made of his 9.92 quarter final time. Just to put it in context, that was the World Record when I first started watching athletics 20 years prior. To see someone run that time so casually was astonishing. I pretty much knew there and then that we had a freak of nature on our hands. Good to see Boldon and the rest of the team recognize how crazy that run was.

@Eastsidecrime because Asafa's issues have absolutely nothing to do with when he peaked. Both he and Shelly were known for their starts but coach Francis understood that that would no longer be enough to win races. He told both if them to take up the 200 to increase their endurance & top end speed. Asafa did it for 1 year & stopped. Shelly continued. Shelly improved Asafa did not.
Then in 2012, Asafa had a major injury. He had to be assisted off the track after the JA trials. JAAA should have replaced him instead of sending him to London. As injured as he was he still did well enough to make the Olympic final. That's how superior an athlete he was in 2012.
So that's why your comment makes no sense because not one of Asafa's performance problems stem from when he peaked.

Other Americans had tested positive for the same stimulant for the same reason (vitamin supplement) around the same time period, and hadn't received a suspension. I have a big problem with the arbitrary way in which punishment is meted out.
No one made Carl Lewis give back his Olympic medals even though he tested positive 3 times for a stimulant that came from his supplements. And were it not for a doctor who came forward years later, no one would have known it happened since both Carl & Team USA hid it from the world.

I find it rather suspicious that after Bolt finished his Olympic career in 2016, they waited until 2017 to remove 1 of his Gold Medals, and he was tied with Carl Lewis before they removed the Relay Gold Medal. I personally don't think that Nesta Carter really had anything to do with it, I think the Committee was just looking for a reason to remove a Medal from Bolt. They didn't want to directly attack Bolt, so they attacked one of his teammates, which in return, it affected Bolt indirectly. They basically got what they wanted, without even attacking or going after Bolt himself.

Meanwhile, Carl Lewis tested positive 3 times for a banned stimulant & he's kept all his medals even though he knew he tested positive before going to the Olympics and then had the nerve to call Ben Johnson a cheater knowing the US had hidden his own positive test results.
