    Amazing fact (thank you and your guide): the Moroccan imperial cities are not just defined by their history, but also by the rich and contrasting colours of their architecture. Ochre and pink for Marrakesh, the dazzling blue of Rabat, and distinctive but differing shades of yellow for Fez and Meknes.

    So good to see your videos of Meknes. I was there only briefly for lunch on the way to Volubilis - impressive Roman ruins from 2-4 BC with homes that have beautiful mosaic floors and bathrooms with heated floors. If you have time, I highly recommend a day trip to Volubilis. It was so fascinating to see the written Berber language. If was as if I could see its origins in hieroglyphics. Safe Travels, Sylvia

    Glade to see my hometown of Meknes. Most of the places you can find and visit by yourself and most people will help you there for nothing. If you keep the lazy attitude of going by and giving up to those mobs it will only encourage them and make them more aggressive and greedy toward future tourists and even locals (that's how Marrakech was ruined). Furthermore for the ambassadors hall (sad to see the poor state in which it has become), it was the place where foreign delegations came to negotiate the release of their relatives captured during piracy raids. The jail was the place where those captives where held until they were ransomed (At first sight it's not something to be proud of, but Morocco was in war at the time with Spain who occupied numerous Moroccan coastal cities, and that was a way which morocco used to make life difficult on the Spanish in those occupied cities, unfortunately the piracy raids didn't make the difference between Spanish and other Europeans, and therefore many british, dutch and others were also kidnaped and ransomed ) That jail is the topic of many legends among meknassi (of course all of the legends are false), among them that it is way bigger than that and that it was limited, or that people got lost or died there ... The Mausoleum of Sultan Ismail is a very beautiful place unfortunately it seems closed. the old medina is similar to what you will find in Fez or Marrakech, there are however some great spots there, like Medrassa's, Very old mosques, shrines and mausoleums, some very calm ancient alleys. Meknassi traditional cuisine chefs are known to be the best in Morocco. But the cool thing there is the vibe and lifestyle, nice coffee shops and restaurants, everything is at a relatively close distance, and all the interesting spots are nearby (Ifran and Azrou the mountain cities, Fez, Rabat, Atlantic coast beach of My Bouselham, Town of My Idriss, Biggest wine property in North Africa "chateau Roslane", Great countryside and forest nearby, great local fruits: Grapes, Almonds, olives, natural hot springs nearby, also natural freezing cold water sources, Mountains of Oulmes ...)

    The tour guide talked about gnawa, basically they were black African people brought to work, then they become a part of the sultan army and they known with strength in fighting, as he talked about Portuguese, the sultan had thousands of Europeans, they were brought from the war or Sea piracy, he used them in some work, and for prisoners exchange.
    The sultan that we talking about is the sultan moulay Ismael from the Alaouite dynasty, they are still on the Moroccan throne from 400 years ago.

People think that Morocco is an Arabian country but it had barbar Kings in dynasties and they still do today

    • @Kirua55
      @Kirua55 Před 7 měsíci

      A Moroccan by definition is a mix of Berber, Arab and Jewish. That's what makes Moroccan so unique. We used to live here under many Moroccan dynasties between Muslims and Jewish without any problems for more than 1200 years. While all Africa was under European colonization, morocco was there as an independent kingdom until 1912 and the French & Spanish protectorate last only 40 years. That's because of the battle of the three kings between Portugal and morocco in 1500 or 1600 I don't remember where the king of Portugal was killed and all the Portuguese army with him. This caused the fall of Portuguese empire and this made all Europeans fear morocco for more than 3 hundred years after. The king that is ruling over morocco now is from a dynasty called Allaouite that ruled over morocco since 1666. Before these dynastie we had strong Moroccan dynasties that ruled over all North Africa, Spain and Portugal and some sub-Saharan countries. Those dynasties are Almoravids, Almohads and Saadis with Marrakech as the capital of the Moroccan empire at that time. This is why when you visit morocco you will see walls, fortifications, huge gates all over morocco which prove how rich was our history.

    Since you are in Meknes, check out also Volubilis, it is an ancient Amazigh city with a lot Roman influences, It was the capital of the Amazigh Kingdom of Mauretania (It was the early name of Morocco before the current state of Morocco was founded in 788).
    Amazigh/berbers where invaded by Romans in 2nd century and there was a lot of cultrual interactions between Greek, Romans, Ancient Egytians and the Amazigh even before. Before a lot of Berbers became Jewish they were pagans and had their own mythological gods that even influenced a lot of what we now know as Greek gods for examples Athena, Poseidon are all Amazigh gods that got introduced in Greek culture. Or Atlas (the mythological Titan) who is told to be carrying the Sky and heavens is derived from a mythological creature of the same name in Amazigh culture that was actually inspired by the Atlas moutains that people believed carried they sky (that's were the who myth came from), another example is how in Amazigh there was a goddess called Ifri (Ifri means cave and it was also the name of an Amazigh war or fertility goddess) the romanization of her name was Africa (Dea Africa) and that's actually one of the most likely origin of the name of the contient.
    If you are still going to stay on the region, I would also recommand you pass by Ifrane (a moutain city between Meknes and Fes), it is an interesting looking city there

      Not sure yet but definitely thinking about it. Algeria is in the way, so I would catch a flight.

    It’s true about the leather from Rabat Moroccan leather is famous for quality and handmade ship👍 I understand you can’t buy suverniers everyday, but you should think about upgrading some EDC when your at places like Rabat, so if I was you I would have upgraded my wallet and a nice belt IF needed 😉
