  • On a tour around the city of Meknes, Morocco I had an unavoidable Moroccan experience: a tour of a carpet shop. But it wasn't just any tour. In the course of displaying and explaining the carpets the owner shared a lot of fascinating information about the multi-cultural customs and history of Morocco.

    Hi Gabriel, In Iberia (Spain and Portugal), the Berbers, now known as Moors, created a highly advanced civilization and culture, famous for its art, architecture, and centers of learning. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. As you'll see, it was their civilization that enlightened Europe and brought it out of the dark ages to usher in the renaissance. Many of their cultural and intellectual influences still live with us today. "The subjects covered by the texts included medicine, astrology, astronomy pharmacology, psychology, physiology, zoology, biology, botany, mineralogy, optics, chemistry, physics, mathematics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, music, meteorology, geography, mechanics, hydrostatics, navigation, and history " These works alone, however, didn't kindle the fire that would lead to the renaissance. They added to Europe's knowledge, but much of it was unappreciated without a change in the way Europeans viewed the world.

    Just loving this particular journey of yours. Just a little info. The term "Berber" is used predominantly by foreigners. Moroccans use it, however they would prefer to be called "Amazigh", which represents their true identity. The word means "free people", and they take great pride in that expression of their culture and traditions. Watching every last second of this, can't wait to see more.

    • @oghuzdynasty777

      Amazigh itself is even diverse. For example, in Morocco, there are Rifians, Shilha, Sanhaja, Ghomaras. I’m not sure if each of them are a ethnic identity, but each of these language are not mutually intelligible.

    • @Lau3464l
      @Lau3464l Před 2 lety +6

      Very interesting! I believe the term "Berber" originated from the Greek word for "barbarian," so it's a shame that term is what is used, if that's true. I definitely see why Moroccans/Amazigh/Berbers would instead have the name "free people," with so much diversity living together peacefully.

      @yodesuyo Před 2 lety +4

Fascinating how language evolves... how we understand the word "barbarian" in modern english to mean savage, wild, tribal, less-than, uncivilized, uncultured... when really it just meant someone who wasn't greek or roman (which i suppose back then likely implied the definitions above, since my understanding was that in ancient times, greeks and romans believed themselves to be the only ones with culture and civilization and knowledge)

    I love the architecture in that there shop! I would have been all over the wooden stained glass windows, the wood doors, the ceiling! What the heck? The ceiling!!! Those archways! And the multiple archways in the other room! No... I would not want to leave for hours lol! He had some dark carpets hanging between the rooms I just loved. That would be all over my house. Man.. I wish I could go there. I will have to settle for the Moroccan pop music instead.. I can get that free and on youtube 😛! Love this segment!
