    The Ford Focus is fast approaching its 25th anniversary, and ever since the radical first Focus hit the road, few other models have so consistently delivered such a strong all-round package in the family car segment.With SUVs stealing sales from traditional compact hatchbacks, the fourth-generation model hasn’t quite hit the same level of popularity as its predecessors, but it remains a key player in Ford’s range. Now, the current Focus has been treated to a mid-life update that includes changes to the styling, interior and powertrain line-up.
    The model range has been revised, too. The previous range-topping Vignale is now a more luxurious add-on pack for the core trims: Titanium, sporty ST-Line and off-road inspired Active, plus there’s entry-level Trend spec. The changes on the outside are mostly cosmetic, but the Focus’s cabin benefits from a comprehensive tech upgrade. The centrepiece is a vast new infotainment screen running new Sync 4 software; Ford says that the 13.2-inch display is the biggest in the class. Loading times have significantly improved, and the large icons and clear graphics make it a doddle to use. But do the upgrades pull the Focus ahead of its rivals? Nicola Hume finds out.

    My family has had the mk1 focus focus (1.8L TDDI) for 18 years now, almost 19 (fun fact, it's the same age as me). Our car has a long history and yet it still runs buttery smooth after all those years and 100+k miles (166.646 km). Still turns up with no problems, it had little to no extraordinary maintenance and everything still works like a charm. With "just" 90 hp it isn't the quickest but it still does 115 mph (180 km/h) with no weird sounds or dancing. Never burnt oil or engine failure. Handling is great, fuel economy fantastic, suspension great even if it's showing its age. It's been my daily driver since I got a license and I'm not planning to change it anytime soon. I love that car and it's still too reliable to let her go. ♥

    I've taught people to drive in Ford's since 2005 and every pupil young and old has loved the experience. I think you only truly get to know how good a car is if you spend all day, every day in it and I've never had any backache or discomfort at all from doing well over 250,000 miles in Ford cars. They've all taken a hammering from learner drivers and not once has the clutch gone. I've only ever had one breakdown in all those miles and that was down to a small crack in a pipe in the engine, something that could happen to any car. Long live Ford and the glorious days you'll spend driving their wonderful cars.

    I had the updated mk2 version of 2008 in the good old Ford 1,8 diesel engine (the one used in Mondeo but downplayed to 115hp). Not fast in acceleration from the green light, but lots of torque and quite very fast in overtaking. And a fantastic handling and comfort, which made it the perfect compact for long distance travelling. I made 250,000 almost trouble free (I said almost because I had an issue with oil filters - but that is the filter, not the car really). One of the strongest points was its space, it was by far the largest compact int he market, and still I do not see larger compacts than that version out on the road. I never lacked space even if moving quite large IKEA boxes or family of 2 kids plus bikes and such. After divorce I gave it to ex-wife to move the kids around as I did not need a car on my new house. I may not miss the ex, but I miss the car and the times I had with the kids in.

    • @dinos9607
      @dinos9607 Před rokem +2

      @@matthewking5612 Well, the usual. Sorry, above I said "oil filters", it was actually the fuel filters - should correct that! Clogged filters. It happens often with the diesels even if you pick good stations that clean frequently their pumps. It was funny however since the engine was not fed properly and it reduced the overall horsepower by quite a lot to the point the car could not attain easily 150km/hr, sometimes sticking to 120 km/hr. I went to a garage and told them it was the filters (they were new), they supposedly checked them and then said it was the air-entry filter, they changed it, nothing happened of course, then I went to a Ford garage and they just changed the filters and the car woke up again. LOL!

    I've got the mk1 with about 40k miles and am currently sitting around 65k miles. The suspension is something i've been very impressed with - it's supple yet the body roll cornering is quite unnoticeable. It can take corners on twisty country roads at 60mph no trouble. Steering feel is probably better than nearly all modern sports cars. Sounds alright when revved. Normal driving is about 40mpg with the 1.6L. It just wish it had more acceleration and better aesthetics. Not bad for £700 though! I do quite like the looks of the new one but I think the 2015 RS might be the best.

    For me, the biggest impact what Mk1 did was its revolutionary design. Inside and out, It was like a piece of art..
    However, the older the Focus gets, the more boring and basic its design gets too.
    Take the Ford logo and replace it with Seat or Hyundai, no one would be surprised.
    I believe all (not only ford) manufacturers should pay more attention on their design. To make their model be much more distinctive.

That experience was enough to get me to pull the trigger on the Focus. After later models came out it sort of teetered between unexceptional and blandness from a style perspective as Ford seemed to loose.. er.. hmm focus. I have the pre facelift 1.5 182 ST Line MK IV. I love of both versions the nose, but I can't get used to that ugly infotainment screen in the facelifted model, stylingwise it doesn't match with the rest of the dash. Here in the Netherlands I spoke a person at the Ford dealer three weeks ago and he said that the 153 bhp version will be scrapped, this is already been done for the Fiesta and will also be done with the Puma. Looking at the car configurator's in Belgium, Germany and France, they also started scrapping this version, so only the 125 hp version will be left. This means for me, a warm and hot hatch lover, that this will be my last Ford. The Mazda 3 with it atmosferic aspired engine will be a serious contender to follow up my Focus..in a few years. The 1.5 is a real jam as is the whole car, I have had fast Peugeot's, Renault's and Mazda's (f.e. a 3 MPS) but this one is overall the best car I have had untill now. As much fun as in the nineties with my Saxo 1.6 16 VTS, Peugeot 106 GTI. It feels on the moterway as a very grown up car (quit, comfortable) but if you push it on a twisty road it has the same feeling as those small france pocket rockets I had 20+ years ago, and which is also a big plus, the fuel consumption 5l/100kms on holiday rides and 7l/100 kms when having seriously fun.

After 13 years and more than 130k miles, I replaced it with a mk3. What a step backwards. Quality wasn't as good as I expected, not as comfy or as good to drive. Mind you, the mk3 was an auto, which let the whole side down anyway. Why can't Ford make / buy a decent autobox?

    I ordered my new focus st Vignale estate back in the beginning of March and I’m still waiting for delivery, granted there’s been hellish delays due to the war in Ukraine and I understand this but the most annoying part of it is is that it’s now here in the U.K. and sat in fords compound in Liverpool and has been for over two weeks! So the car is about two hours drive away from my home and was told by the dealership that I’d have it last week now it was this week and obviously it’s or not going to be next week.
    I’m not impressed at all. Then this Monday I won’t have a vehicle at all as I was made an offer on my current car that I couldn’t refuse two weeks ago and he was happy to wait for two weeks before collection as I was certain that I would have my new car by this time. So I’m now going to be stuck in the country with no bus service. I’m really not impressed by fords customer service and this may well be the last Ford I buy.

    I've never liked the styling of the rear of the current Focus, from its launch until now after the facelift. To my eyes even the rear of the current estate version is poorly styled. The rear of the original Mark I hatch is still the best of all the Focuses (Foci?) to my eyes. I recently had a 2021 Focus as a loan car whilst my own Ford Fiesta was being serviced and MoT'd and found the A-pillar very thick and obstructive too, so much so that I wouldn't buy one

    My father has the previous gen with the 1.0 125hp ecoboost. It drives amazingly, as if it was on rails. One thing I notice, Ford workers say it's normal of that generation, the brakes are suuuuper sensitive. Like, if I apply the same force as every other car in a slow down situation, in the Focus it'll be almost like a full stop. Is it still like that in the current gen?

    • @dornsmichel_1364
      @dornsmichel_1364 Před rokem +1

      I have a pre Facelift MK4. Haven't driven a MK3 but I observed that it depends on the driving mode you have selected. The brakes react pretty slow in eco mode but pretty fast in sports mode. But that's what I've experienced on my focus, so take the info with a grain of salt

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh Před rokem

      I owned a Focus 1.0 litre Ecoboost for 4 years. It has both it's strengths and weaknesses...... It's a fairly smooth engine for a 3 cylinder, and pulls surprisingly well. But just don't expect anything like the fuel returns Ford promise. The most I ever saw in 4 years was 44mpg. I replaced the Focus with an ex demo VW Golf 1.4 Tsi with the 7 speed DSG auto. What a total revelation and contrast! The Golf was *way* smoother and quieter, more comfortable, roomier, *much* better on fuel (I often saw high 50's mpg on cross country trips), plus the build quality was in another universe...... And with Tsi spec you have both selectable driving modes, plus the ability to select gears yourself with the DSG box, if you prefer....

  • @Benzknees

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh Před rokem

      I doubt Ford will be bringing back any ICE engines at this point in time. New or older - but rehashed ICE engine designs have no future beyond the end of 2029, as it will be become illegal to sell new ones.

    • @Benzknees
      @Benzknees Před rokem

      @@Brian-om2hh - Well the engine is still there in the ST versions, so it's only a question of tuning it for less power & more torque.
      Also do you really think ICE will be phased out in only 8yrs? EVs are unaffordable for most, have charging times & range make them a lot less practical, and there's still so few chargers about. It'd be massively unpopular & would unseat any Govt. that imposed it. Seems more likely it'll be delayed till 'green' hydrogen goes mainstream.

  • @Nakke144
    @Nakke144 Před rokem

    It looks good, but i prefer the old nose. And if you get 45-50mpg it's not being held back against VAG PHEV's. To get any proper MPG out of a Golf GTE or similar you have to be plugging it in constantly and only driving very short distances. My mate has one, and it's fuel consumption on a motorway with his wife, kids and luggage on board is absolutely horrendeous since the GTE is already a very heavy car even when empty due to the electric motor and battery packs. They are also a huge risk to buy, as you can't get simple DSG clutch packs and flywheels as spare parts due to the gearbox being integrated with the electric powertrain, so when your clutch pack or flywheel fails, wich is fairly common on DSG VAG cars, you have to buy a complete new transmission.
