It's interesting how the meaning of the song changes completely between the demo and NFR version...almost like it's referring to two different people
I think he album version refers to Jack Antonoff, and this one refers to Dan Auerbach
@@ChanRawrer I thought the song was about her and her lover making the next best american record, with the record being like a metaphor for trying so hard to get that perfect relationship... is it just about her producers ? ;-;
@@shaxief1298 whatttt
The song is about her ex Barrie.
@@intrinsiclust I agree
It’s crazy how “I see you for who you really are” can mean two drastically different things
What’s the other meaning
it gave me goosebumps
@@justranch9872 1. can mean that 'I see who you really are, a jerk' and 2. 'I can see you for who you really are and not for what others portray you as' (in a positive way)
@@user-qf5kl6cv2ypretty sure it's negative here since she immediately afterwards contrasts herself with all those other girls that admire the way he plays guitar (metaphor for seeing his star power but not him being a jerk whereas she does)
This version feels like she wrote it when the memories were fresh and you can clearly hear the cynical anger in the lyrics. But in the NFR version, she reflected and introspected on the relationship and came to a point that she too had a part in the breakup of the relationship. It's crazy how reflection of events and time in general changes our perspective on things and issues.
I got the feeling that she sensed NFR would be praised by critics and changed the lyrics to reflect the fact that the album you are listening to is actually the next best American record.
i think her and Jack KNEW they were writing the Next Best American Record
She said she changed the lyrics to reflect the albums overall theme of Nostalgia and letting go of things that give you happiness and hope.
She never cared for that though. She has faced so much criticism over the years and still continues to write and sing what she wants.
@@elioben5810I'm sure she cared for it a bit seeing as NFR is pretty polished up. Ocean Blvd and blue banisters i definitely see as more personal and organic than NFR which is why they're above it in my book
This version is so good. But I also love the released version, because it feels that she went through the process of maturing and realising maybe she had a part in the end of the relationship. This change tells a beautiful story.
I agree. It shows how diaristic she is with music, even the songs that already have been made, she remanufactures them based on new reflections and realizations. And I’m pretty sure she knows we have this version and the NFR version was the juxtaposition of someone going through the maturing process and since she doesn’t care about the charts she probably knows some of us get the point of reworking the song for NFR. It’s insane how she makes her life into living dynamic art.
I love this version, for me she's angry here and then on NFR time has passed and her feelings changed along with the lyrics, meaning "i was angry but i'm tired of fighting, it doesn't matter now" = "whatever's on tonight I just wanna party with you"
My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
To the Houses of the Holy, smoking on them cigarettes
My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
He was cool as heck, he was cool as heck
But you were so obsessed with writing
The next best American record
That there was nothing left by the time we got to bed
Baby, that's a shame
You were so obsessed with writing
The next best American record
You did it all for fame
You did it all for fame
You did it all for fame
Tell me how it treats you now
You did it all for fame
How does that taste coming out?
You did it all for fame
Baby, how's life treating you now that it's over?
My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
He was seventies in spirit, nineties in his frame of mind
My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
We lost track of space, we lost track of time
But you were so obsessed with writing
The next best American record
That there was nothing left by the time we got to bed
Baby, that's a shame
You were so obsessed with writing
The next best American record
You did it all for fame
You did it all for fame
You know what I'm talking about
You did it all for fame
Tell me how life treats you now
You did it all for fame
How does that taste coming out?
Now that you lost the game
Honey, how's life treating you now that it's over?
Baby, how you feeling now that I told ya?
It's you, all the roads lead to you
Everything I want and do
All the things that I say
It's true, all the roads lead to you
Like the 405 I drive through
Every night and every day
I see you for who you really are
Why the thousands of girls love the way Bill plays guitar
You did it all for fame
Tell me how life treats you now
You did it all for fame
How does that taste coming out?
You did it all for fame
Honey, how's life feeling now that it's over?
Baby, how's life treating you now that I told ya?
Honey, how's it feeling now that I told you?
Honey, how's it feeling? I told you
Honey, how's it feeling?
Honey, how's it feeling? I told you
This version makes ALOT more sense that the nfr one
Agreed. I feel like they just changed it so that people would be happy that it is more positive. Obviously I don't know that for sure, and it's not my buisness. I just get the feeling, you know?
Exactly
Very true!
Both makes sense, just two completely different naratives
This still my favourite version
Mine too
It’s the only version of this song if you ask me 💕
how…
@@Creamly1 naur the nfr version is so much better
@@masonbenjamin9161 girl where ?? This version has cadence, emotion, a better bridge, and the whole song is a lot more cohesive. Also I personally don’t care for that fake happy stuff but that’s just me lmao
I like the version on NFR, but for some reason this version just sounds like shes in so much more pain even tho some people say that her voice sounds flat, but it just makes sense idk.
This is crazy how some lyric lines can change whole meaning and mood
People bashing the released version of this song kills me because while both are really good I think that the released one is a more realistic point of view. She recognizes that he isn't the only one focused on fame and putting aside a relationship, this time she's showing that its both's fault while in this one its more self focused and blaming it all in the other person and while that happens in real life if she changed the lyrics it has to be because she realized that he wasn't the only one in the wrong
Idk. I feel lana goes hard in love. She’s either all in or not at all. I think she takes on the habits of her loves so while they both were putting their all into the best American record she was only doing it for him and to get some of his attention. She seems to go for dominant men who r obsessed with their work and stuck in their own worlds. I think she likes escaping from her reality for a while.
So I feel this version is the truer of the two. It captures the emotional separation exceptionally while her album version makes it sound like they had a functional relationship and were working together as equals taking on the world. I don’t buy that coming from Lana. There’s never a power balance in the relationships she sings about so her attempting to make this one appear to be….but who knows. We like Lana bcuz we can’t understand her.
@@essenceocean595 this was just beautiful to read.
I prefer this version so much more, I remember being so excited when it leaked (as fucked up as it was that shit leaked)
I remember when it leaked we all thought it was was the title track of what turned out to be the Lust for Life album. I was really excited when I saw it on the NFR tracklist, but then disappointed when I realised she changed the lyrics. This version would have been even better on NFR.
@@UltraViolet666 and they really did this song dirty with white mustang 😵
Shameful, admitting to listening to leaked stuff. Proudly I have never, but I've been singing and playing instruments for almost 15 years , so I have the fullest respect for artists. Just try to imagine how it feels to have your music leaked after working so hard, writing, editing, producing, recording. Sorry to put you on blast but you are definitely not a true Lana fan, or else you would listen to the albums/tracks when SHE drops them, not the douchebag leakers. ✌️❤️🇺🇸😠
Lol I listened to this song when it was leaked cause I thought it was official version. I don't think it makes me a bad fan, you're here as well
@@TylerJMartino arent you listening to a leak rn 💀💀
That Mirror or glass breaking sound makes sense with this song
The lyrics paint a way clearer picture, and there’s a more direct narrative in this one. That’s why it’s better. It’s telling a story. Saying ‘you were obsessed’ instead of we and making it about this man is naturally more pleasing. After hearing the album version it does not compare. You can tell how much it was reworked for NFR. You can feel the emotion in this one, it doesn’t sound like a song meant to be upbeat or positive, because it isn’t. It’s bitter sweet. You can feel the emotions in her sadness about the guy she’s talking about who had no time for her because of his obsession, I especially love the lyric “there was nothing left by the time we got to bed, baby that’s a shame.” Lana’s a great story teller.
Who the fuck is Denys Mallet any way. He seems to be madly in love with Lana Rey but I just need to reach this dude to tell him he is wrong because I love her more. Its that simple. Maybe he will stop following you on the net like a stalker does.
@@dreamdealersmusic9853 bro what are you even talking about lmfao get some sunlight
I think the whole "you were so obsessed with fame, how is it treating you now?" is a message for her self. She's talking to herself. She lost a guy because of fame.
In God knows I tried she says "I've got nothing much to live for, ever since I found my fame"
And given how horrible the media was (and still is) with her from day zero, we can understand the "how is it treating you now"
This was in the moment and TNBAR is in hindsight, she takes more responsibility and acceptance. It’s actually a fascinating arc.
Thank you. I’m so happy to find out people love this version over the new one. It’s phenomenal.
the original will be good if the outro of this version is in it
I love both versions for what they are. I think they both paint a different story on their own and I love that 💜
The first and original version, best song
that “you know what im talking about” is from the song “Because of You”. took me a while to remember bc i heard she would sample some of her old songs.
Oh, that's right❤
It’s basically the same except some lyrics were changed and the outdo WHICH IS SO GOOD
I also like the vocals better in this version.
NFRs version feels overproduced
@@victornoe7387 as much as i love Lana, i agree. California's my favourite from the album and after all the excitement when i first heard it slowly faded away which i got to listen to it more objectively, i realized it's pretty overproduced with all the tech sounds
This version is about the spiteful satisfaction of watching someone’s career flop. Maybe it was written about Barrie, or maybe someone else - regardless, in the released version she seems to make the song about regret and acknowledge that she was a factor as well to making their relationship deteriorate. That version is okay but I think this one has masterful storytelling and makes the song superior and way more interesting as instead of being a “I love the way we were” sentiment, this one is “Thanks for ruining our relationship for your stupid song, which wasn’t even that good, and by the way you lost your fame and also me - so now you have nothing left how does that feel to acknowledge and have to say out loud that I was right?”. Who knows to what degree Lana writes autobiographically, so maybe she really wanted the song to follow on from California’s “come back to me” message on NFR. But if it was purely from interesting song writing, it was a huge mistake to remove this. Not sure I’ll ever get over it. Also, “you think you’re top ship, but you’re actually an idiot” I thought was the whole point of NFR . .
Didn’t she date G - Eazy ?
It was abt G Eazy
@@caincatalan3180 the original version was made during the time she was with Barrie, she hadn't meet G-Eazy at that time
Yes!! And I love this version!
This comment is ancient, but it's widely believed that in the original version, whenever she uses you - she refers to herself and not Barrie. So, she in fact sings about how she sacrificed her relationship with him in order to give all the energy to writing Ultraviolence. The title "the next best american record" also could be a call back to the fact that one of BTD titles she came up with was "the best of lana del rey",
Even the demos are like a complete different track with a different meaning and theme
She literally could put out an album with one song and different interpretations
Something about her voice...😭 I love you
ooh i never got over this version, i really wanted this to be the official one lmao it's so freakin good & profound it just takes me to another world
This is actually about Dan Auerbach going through a divorce and him being obsessed in writing Ultraviolence
Is it really? Does she say in an interview? I thought it was widely believed to be about G-eazy
@@UltraViolet666 -the lyrics(might be in POV of the ex-wife),
-the music video(the model portay closer to Dan than G),
-the situations Dan was in(his divorce, influenced the lyrics?),
-Dan’s interviews on fighting for Ultraviolence(as it was first denied by the label),
-Lana’s interview about working with Dan(he was obsessed with UV).
You can google up these things, i think it’s very likely and make a lot more sense than anything Geasy.
Beside, Lana seems to not get sentimental about G, she rather seems pissed,
I think the one song about G is “In My Feelings”, its a shady song… she says “you wanna make the switch?”…as G switched her for Halsey as a feature in “Him and I” which released few months after; Halsey’s melodies in the track kinda resonates Lana’s singing techniques.
Anyway, its just my speculation, take it with a grain of salt.
@@ChanRawrer there is a music video to the neext best american recored ?? excuse me
@@aiaphrodite6855 the music video for White Mustang was originally done for NBAR… you can google up “Lana best american record white mustang music video” or around those lines, there are few uploads.
U’ll see the music video will make more sense with it.
Make sure its one that plays the first version of NBAR, not the album album one, but the one in this video ☝️
@@ChanRawrer I'm still not sure about it. It's the "you did it all for fame" "I told you" "now that you lost the game" that still wouldn't make sense if it was about Dan.
This version is my fav ever
Yessss
This version sounds better, both lyrically and musically
This version will always be the one and only 'best american record' to me. Much rather prefer this version than the other. Literal chills when I first heard this version. The other one was good but it did not meet my expectations. Some of the lyrics were odd whereas this version was very well written.
No, lol. The NFR version is much better, grown, polish and mature
I just discovered this version and I couldn't agree more. I didn't like the other version very much because I feel like the lyrics evoked a Lust for life vibe, and I'm not a big fan. But this one just does it for me. It's just as melancholic and sad as I like it.
Also this is the song which the video for white mustang was made for, og asf
This is the only version I have downloaded even.
So, Lana maturing is not meeting your expectations? Lmao
The instrumental on the album version and demo both fit much more with Lust for Life as well.
This version is the best ❤️ that's usually the case with her unreleased versions are way beyond better love her
So bittersweet and angelic . Bumpin this hard lately. Thx for blessing my ears
I love that we also get the chance to listen to demos of her songs
I was searching for this version a long time thanks for this 💕
both versions are amazing imo
I like this version more but I feel like the NFR version fit the album more but individually I like this one more.
This demo was record for Lust for life..
@@real_dobrutskiy for real ❤
I always thought the chorus to NBAR felt very out of line with the rest of the song. This version is much better
My thoughts every time i hear the NFR version.. I wish she kept this one.
This was my first Lana song and it made me fall in love.
Lanita Bless You 🌺❤️🏹🌼✨
It’s so crazy, how the song starts very happy and light and the second half is so dark that its almost creepy.
Like a horror movie
This could have been the FIRST SONG on LUST FOR LIFE album, before LOVE! It would make total sense!!! Who agrees with me?
I hated love :( this would've been iconic
@@zorahaeby2092 love might’ve been better with some more blue banisters style “beautiful” esque production
noooo if love wasn't the lead single from lfl I wouldn't have found out who lana is
@@zorahaeby2092 idk how u didn't liked it I think it's one of her best songs
@@zorahaeby2092 how? Love is so good the hell
I love this version most. Please don’t ever delete this!
i just wish the official version had this kind of outro, but i stay with the original
everyone's saying they like this version better but i definitely prefer the nfr version
A lot of us heard this one first
literally this one is so repetitive💀 i only like the outro on this
Me too
definitely. i prefer A LOT of her other demos to their final versions, but the lyrics here are just clumsy and childish.
I love the tone of this one so much more ♥️
I wish this, Yosemite and On & On & On were released on LFL... These songs would save the album
Don't get me wrong, LFL is one of my favourites albums by Lana, but some songs on LFL could've been replaced by these and the album would be even better
agree. some songs on LFL are an absolute masterpiece and the best songs ever, while some are average. i like the album all together but it could've been way better
@@lb9440 it really had the potential to be as influential as NFR.
"I TOLD YA" superior just for that
the "I told ya" damn!!!
This will ALWAYS be the superior version
Just listen to this with the white mustang video. THAT VIDEO WAS FOR THIS SONG
I love both versions but the one on NFR is clearly superior in both its production and lyrics being a more mature take on the relationship now that she has healed and moved on and can see it from a clear perspective instead of just one repetitive line throughout the song lol
FINALLY someone who agrees that the nfr one is better
@@honeydew2907 i think NFR is more cohesive and flows better, but i am intrigued by this version

meu deus! que demo incrível
WHY DID THEY CHANGED IT DAMNNNN this is so much better
this is the superior version

Omg I love this version more!!!!
I love this song so much :)
AHHH I LOVE THIS OMFG
I love the outro
it's a feeling 🥺🌬️✨💙
These lyrics make Way more sense I mean really. The only version that I listen to
3:14 Wildflower Wildflire
The demos are the Best always i love Lana
My fav version
This song is about her chasing fame but in Barrie's POV
Or Dan Auerbach obsession in writing music and him going through a divorce while making Ultraviolence.
In his ex wife POV
I heard and loved this version first years ago and LOVED it. The new version didn’t do it justice
I’ll always love this version.
Almost all of us love this version more
Although I’m glad Lana decided to put this on NFR, this version is way better than the official one.
I still prefer this version.
my opinion is:
lirically the message gets across better on this version but repeating "you did it all for fame" sounds very repetitive and quite simple in comparison. i would have preferred the song with this message but more complex lyrics
musically the main difference is the trap beat on this one that's missing in the NFR version, I would've kept the trap
the outro here is also better on this one and would've kept it
Nah this version is the original amd way better one. The other one just talks about partying in Malibu so unrelatable
Elizabeth is so clever !
How so fire? How so good? Flames
one of her best songs ever 🙏🏻💙 much better than the album version
The thing about Lana is that sometimes I'm not sure if she's talking about someone else or herself.
yeah idk but i think this one is definitely about someone else
Why the album version cut the last part?!
It’s so good!😭
outro had LFL vibe so it had to go.
The vocals are so much better in this but the lyrics were better on NFR. Still glad I get to hear this demo. I admire Lana's songwriting, and she doesn't elaborate much on it, so it's good that there's so many demos and unreleased songs to analyse
Wtf 1000 views its beautiful!!!
You did it all for fame.. I love this version
3:13 is that the same “you know what I’m talking about” from Because Of You?
this is the best version, the final one on NFR feels like a filler song
someone should set this version to the white mustang music video - i know someone's done her released version, but i feel like this one would fit even better lollll
Me encantan ambas
Personally I prefer the released version cuz the lyrics just sounds more right to the instrumental, but lana should've really kept in the "honey, how's it feeling?" Bit in 😭
Yes the final part is better here
I love this version but the new version makes so much more sense in the NFR album. This song comes right after California, which if its about Barrie, is a song that's welcoming him back into her life. I assume this song is also about Barrie. Seems like she is reminiscing about their good times here.
i’m sorry this is miles better
Another thing cool about her is how she works her songs, itll, start out one name and end up Another by time she's done, the Floyd use to do the same thing
Queen of recycling ♻️🪴🍏🏹🌴💚
This was better than the one on the album:(
I think that's why she scrap this version is because she will contradict her past persona of having her own fame as her number one priority and people will condemn her for it like how they criticize her past discography
LIKE THE 405 I DRIVE THRU
Every night and every day
I love these lyrics so much more than the NFR version 💝
this one is something
i've learned to like the album version more but I still really miss this outro...
A versão original é milhões ❤🤩
Tinha que ter sido a primeira música do Lusr for Life, antes de Love. Faria todo o sentido!! Se é que não seria assim se não tivesse sido cortada. Quando eu ouço o álbum, coloco ela primeiro.
LIKE THE THOUSANDS OF GIRLS LOVE THE WAY BILL PLAYS GUI-TAaAaAaArRrRrR!!!
I remember this version my heart 🥺🥺💔
I think it’s a shame she changed the lyrics because they actually fit the record very well as they are. The title track and this song go very well together.
I prefer this one tbh
I still think she could've used this version for NFR. It would've just added another aspect to the narrative.
firtst time hearing this version, i don't know what to think....
this reminds me of "Crazy for you" (her unreleased song)
there is some resemblance on the first part and the verses
such along a go.
"honey has a feeling" 😭💔
