How To Pass Everyone Without Wrecking a Formula Race Car

I love this charity race every year with The Morgan Adams Foundation, started by my dear friend Joan Slaughter, after her ten-year old daughter Morgan tragically died of cancer. We raised over $200,000 at this year's event! And Joan puts it all to its best purposes, a highly motivated mother who makes things happen. It's a Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing event, with hundreds of fantastic old racers (cars and drivers, haaa), and they always let me take the wheel of a few myself. This year, Steve Mercer shared his freshly restored 1972 Winklemann Formula Ford, from what was for many years the most popular class in the world. It was fast fun in a field of forty Formula Fords (How's THAT for alliteration?). I always greatly enjoy the crowd and their amazing machines, from MG's to Corvettes to Lola's and McLaren's. Special thanks to Jamie and Carol Stiehr for arranging so much for me this weekend. The track is High Plains Raceway near Denver, Colorado, and the Race Against Kids Cancer (RAKC) happens once every summer. There is also a fantastic car, bike and airplane show called The Morgan Adams Concours at Denver's Centennial airport in August, now about twenty years running.
And our super-handy partner: The FEZIBO dual motor height adjustable desk with keyboard tray helps create a better work environment by moving throughout your day. The splicing of wood and steel makes the style of the standing desk more special. Switching between sitting and standing throughout a long workday provides essential health benefits for your body. It's time to pass on the fun... plus I need the money for a new daily. :-) I'm asking $17k OBO. With a few mods this thing would be perfect for rallycrosses. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time or the money to do it. It is perfect for anything off road as is! Love the commentary throughout the race. Your insights about how/when to pass, and how to approach corner entry/exit make for excellent teaching material!
Congrats on the win!

Thought the same the entire thing. Really entertaining and educating at the same time. Loved it!
That was unbelievably entertaining and insightful. Keep these coming, Randy! You're always giving me no other option than to be a big big fan of yours, haha! 😁
Light car, light driver with tons of racing under his belt equals the big W! Wonderful commentary Randy.
Congratulations!
Way to go Randy supporting the prevention, treatment and care for children with cancer. Well done!
That was intense, love the commentary.
I used to race a 1975 Zink Z10 Formula Ford. Great fun. The engines are now longer lasting than they used to be, and the harder tires reduces costs compared to the any-thing-goes slicks they used to run. Very affordable racing. And as you said, a real race car.
Glad to hear that, Gregory, you mean the Honda they now use? Seems a great and necessary idea, a modern engine. And if the tires can be competitive more than one race, that would help a lot. The class got spoiled when technology, inboard suspension and the like, got outta hand. The simple early cars are all ya need for a great racing experience, and the popularity of vintage FF bears that out. Worked for me. 👍.
@@randypobstofficial The Honda Fit engine has certainly reduced costs in the modern cars, but I don't think it's allowed in most vintage racing ("Club Formula Ford").
Fortunately, there have also been improvements in the old Ford Kent engine. They used to only last reliably and competitively maybe 25 hours. Often the Ford crank would blow up (taking the rest of the engine with it), since it was not designed to rev to 6800 RPM, as in these cars. Several years ago they allowed an after-market crank, and now the engines are reliable for 50 hours or more. You can also get new blocks from Ford these days, so you don't have to rummage through the junk yard for a 1973 Pinto!
@@randypobstofficial The current FF Ford Kent engines with a better crankshaft go for at least 50 hours between rebuilds. No need to update these wonderful old cars which would be sacrilege to many.
Wow! I gotta find a way to do this! Super cool racing. That's what I live for right there. Chasing that faster car is where it's at!

Man I really enjoy and appreciate that you take the time to narrate these and explain the decision processes and choices you make. As these days the most racing I do is the comments section. But it doesn't degrade my passion for all types of racing any. Thanks Randy!
Nice job Randy!
Randy being wholesome as always
@@amytaylor8487 hello spambot. I won't click on your scam link thank you
@@amytaylor8487 you've commented the same thing on different channels, but then I see you have videos with your daughter so idk. Have a wonderful day you too, or if you're spam, then fuck you. Lol
@@TheDonCucaracho I've erased several, thinking the same thing. Maybe Amy Taylor is just trying to build a following? It's suspicious to post the same thing over and over, even if sweet wording.
@@amytaylor8487 Well, no, but you do seem like one. Real responses are always appreciated, but constant repetition seems suspicious.
@@randypobstofficial idk Randy
Anyways, know you're awesome and a legend
Love the pure POV content Randy, it's not just entertaining but also very educational for aspiring racers!
I bet that was atleast twice as fun to drive as it looked(ps it looked epic!) What a great group of drivers and cars!
Thank you and RMVR for helping with the fight against kids cancer. Those Formula Fords look super fun to drive, and that racing technique is incredible!

You are doing a superb job demonstrating my theory that in a race where all the cars are pretty much equal, corner exit speed is everything.
And also a fantastic job in raising money for the charity.
Randy, you're always so upbeat and positive, perfect example of a real competitor! Thanks for sharing your adventures and good cheer with all of us!!
Clicked for the thumbnail. Did not regret clicking.
Pretty sure that was Mark Irvin in front at the end. Happy to say that "I knew Mark when he didn't know the difference between an early and a late apex". Obviously, that was LONG ago! Great narration, Randy!
It was definitely Mark Irvin he was chasing. 😊 🏎
That looked like it was a lot of fun.
Good year, 1970. Awesome video, just the kind I like, and a great drive.
Great content, Randy.
Congratulations on the sponsorship, well deserved!
Thx Dustin, we are honored to have the sponsors, indeed. I dig the standing desk and wallet!
Racing school 101, loved this video keep it up Randy great content!!
Randy’s attitude is great. He didn’t get 1st overall, but you wouldn’t have guessed it by seeing him after the race. Note to self: be like Randy.
Dear Randy, thank you first for supporting charity. Then and I have not seen the video as I wanted to say what I said. I drove the formula fords I think 1.6l and the 2000 or 2 liter. I loved it and I am not a professional like you. That was about 30 years ago on the Jim Russel track north of Montreal (not certain I have the name correct). I am so happy when you post.
This was one hell of an exciting video. Appreciate the insight it's amazing how quick you are
This was so epic Randy. Your passion is so inspiring
Thank you Randy for taking us along. I loved it!
When it’s your own car and money on the line most people realize their limitations sooner nice to see the gentleman racing 👍
Love the vid Randy would love more of this content, you have so much to give and we all appreciate the knowledge shared….also so fun to watch
Awesome video randy super informative and fun to watch! Kickass it's being done for such a good cause aswell. Keep up the videos man!
Love this type of video!! Really appreciate you taking the time to record it and then edit it with the explanations!!
Sir You Are A Master!!!! I never get tired of watching you carve through the field.
Randy, you made it look easy. Awesome clean racing, we love to see it!
Great fun! Thanks for bringing us along!
love watching you work Randy ..
That was a great watch!! Nice handling there mate and the commentary was class 👌Very good cause too, hats off!
Great video, Randy! Would love to see more like this.
Great run and commentary. I learned some good passing lessons! I first saw you racing the E34 M5 in the Bridgestone SuperCar Series with your teammate Shawn Hendricks. That race at Sebring made be a BMW fan!!
I am so glad I found your channel and that you had 1 to find. I learn so much from them and love to listen to you narrate them. You can definitely tell you love what you do. Thanks!
Well I am now that I read your post 😉
@@cjcoleman7372 Please excuse the Amy Taylor replies. They seem to be looking for business. BUT, thank you so much for your kind response to my channel, CJ!
@@randypobstofficial no worries Randy.. it's fun to mess with them. Like the calls about your extended warranty or about the account at Amazon that I've never had. Lol
Outstanding. Loved it. Thanks Randy!
Great racing, and I really enjoyed that commentary format 👌
The fact that Randy was able to pick off all but one in the entire field in older machinery on treaded tires shows just how much of a machine he really is. Great drive!
Not to take anything away from his driving. The treaded tires are really slicks with a thin groove cut in them to make them look vintage.
They're all in older cars, and all are on the same tires, but still an incredible drive.
As a non-racer I feel like you taught me quite a bit about what lines to run on a track and when to brake / accelerate
My goodness I was glued to the screen. Rooted for you hard to catch that driver ahead of you! Congratulations!
Wow that was killer...catching up to and almost beating the class above you!
FF1600 is such a great fun car to race.
Low grip, Low BHP, not a lot of brakes, but a very big smile!
Great video. I very much enjoyed your racing and commentary.
Thank you for sharing and the commentary was great. All of us that are local to Denver are going to be a few tenths quicker next time we lap HPR. May your passion for all things fast on wheels never expire!
Great video Randy and you certainly looked like you were enjoying yourself. Excellent commentary and video. Thank you.
FANTASTIC ride along Randy! There is so much that changes from just doing Laps vs Passing other drivers; the skill, intuition, and how the dynamics change!
Great race & cause Randy! You commentary was fantastic!! Blessings :)
@@amytaylor8487 Very well thank You! I am having a wonderful day thanks & likewise of course! Many smiles per gallon along Your way! : }
Thanks for the ride Randy that was great
Nice and smooth,Randy. Awesome driving as always! That more modern Ford was just a step faster.
WoooHooo!!!! That was fun!!! Dude. You're obviously a racing driver and you did a great job commentating too!!! Great stuff. Really enjoyed your commentary on what you were thinking and your strategy/approach.
Some of the best pov race commentary I've seen!
What a great running commentary - informative, exciting and a tremendous amount of fun listening and watching some very good racing... congrats to all.
Randy is sooo good and sooo cool. His presence at our Races against Kids' Cancer over the years is always a treat. That video tells me in my next life I want to come back as Randy Pobst.
Funny with the desk ad. I got one months ago cause it was cheap. It's actually held up well lol.
Great video! I really enjoy that track, I've done a track day and a Lemons race there.
You’re a legend! This was awesome 😎
You are a true master. Thank you for sharing!
Oh my gosh !!! That was awesome racing !!!!!!!! I just knew you were going to pull a Rabbit out of your hat on that final lap . Great racing by all concerned !!!!!!!!!
That was awesome! Thank you!!! 😀
Watched the whole video.... it will take some time for my heart rate to come down. Randy, your moment to moment commentary is top notch. You are my hero !!
Living my life vicariously through your adventures !! Thanks buddy.
I can only imagine how my dad wheeled his Formula Vee in the mid 60's at Le Circuit, at Mont Tremblant, Quebec.
Beautiful piece of work
Awesome driving and narration. Many thanks for posting
That looks like SO much fun!
Very well made video, club racing and professional racing you take difference risks. Really amazing video
loved the commentary. That was some awesome old school racing.
N O I I C E ! ! 👏🏼👏🏼
great driving 👍🏼👍🏼
Randy, do you ever attend the Vintage Races at COTA in early November? It’s fun.
That looks so much fun!
This was a great watch !
Fun race. High Plains is a little gem of a track, I need to get back there again soon!
Loved every minute of it.
So impressed with your driving, from back of the pack to the front before the race was half-over! I got to play with a formula Ford at PPIR and lapped my son in a 10 lap short-track race, and it was a blast. I have gone out to Second Creek a couple of times to wear out some track only to the cords with my turbo Subaru in the early 2000's. And I used to race motorcycles at Texas World Speedway in college in the 80's, and in 1996 took my 600cc bike to the track in Longmont before it was torn down. I'm only 59, but fear that my track days are in my past for good.
Great video, loved it! Be well.
*POBSTAMAJIK* Great episode. Lap narration is ace!
WAY more entertaining than a Formula 1 race. I think I'll just watch these from now on.
If professional racing had this much action people would actually watch it. All the aero, tech, HP and what not has only made the cars faster and more dangerous, the racing is worse. Great vid and editing Randy.
Gorgeous track - never seen it before!
You've really got some great tracks in North America - really similar to European tracks.
A1Clutch. ⛳ 👏
Never knew I needed a Volvo shirt with a prancing moose on it before. XD
I pray for the day I can spot Randy making a mistake and correct him in the comments. He's untouchable!
It happens!
We love you, Randy!
What a pleasure to watch you race Randy. How you are not piloting a car at LeMans is beyond me.
Great video. Love that old Ford engine - the basis for the legendary Lotus Twin Cam and the Cosworth FVA which became the DFV!
Those little formula cars look groovy and fun, Randy!
Randy...this was a thrilling ride! I love your turn by turn narrative. Come on though, own up, that FF has 0.25 HP more than the other FF in class. DON'T LIE!!! WE CAN TELL!!!
LOVE the play by play!!!
The commentary was great. Learned a lot.
Love the room and respect given to, and from all drivers. Great display of when to choose to, and not to pass. Wish young sim racers would watch this and learn, a dive bomb is a denial of ideal line not pass and slam on the brakes. Also 75% percent of race craft is patience. And being relentless and steady offers results. Definitely a must see for the youngsters. Randy your a instructor without knowing it. TKS.
Fantastic video.
Jeez, you were passing like it was a video game!! Great driving.
Excellent driving and great racecraft! Literally, in the first 2 seconds of the video, I thought, "That looks like the paddock at HPR." I think I've spent too much time there. BTW, if you ever put your left rear off at the top of 7, it gets very exciting. DAMHIK.
Just goes to show that true racing and having fun racing is more about racing and racecraft and less about having the most insane hardware known to man.
Watching your racecraft with commentary is mesmerising Randy, more of these please 😁👍
Couldn't have said it better
I have to admit I love racing Formula Fords and even got paid to race them.
Randy, you made me miss rescuing those cars!
Your technique is so easy on the car.
Now take this compliment easy. You're ease on the car is reminiscent of Jim Clark.
I know, I know. Jenson Button has a similar touch with a car.
Loved this and respect to the charity. Children having cancer is wrong.
One other joy is seeing you toe-heeling that transmission. I was taught to toe-heel in an Opel GT by my female church youth group leader, Phoebe. She's a great person all around, plus she was a USCCA racer back in the day.
Seeing you toe-heel reminds me of the Ayrton Senna video that he uses the technique in the Acura NSX, the original NSX. It's a great video that's well worth watching. Seems is dressed casually, then gets into the car at the Acura test track and beats it around the track. It's a powerful performance by Senna that leaves a lasting Itself lmpression.
So Randy, your toe-heel work reminded me of Senna. How about that?!
Love the series, well, all of your series. Great stuff. 👍👍🏻👍👍🏻👍👍🏻😎😎
Was randy playing real life Asetto Corsa on beginner mode again? Just dominating!
Nice driving! That car had good top end!
That power to weight ratio is beautiful
