  • In this episode we find out whether Jamie's plan was a success, or was Julie Critchlow right from the start...
    The series was based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Jamie Oliver aimed to make the town "the culinary capital of the United Kingdom" and tried to get the town's inhabitants to learn how to cook fresh food and establish healthy eating as part of daily life.
    Jamie's Ministry of Food originally aired on Channel 4. If you’re UK based stream Jamie programmes on All 4 www.channel4.com

    We live in a world where there is so much beyond our power to change, so keep reminding yourself DON'T stress over what you can't change, give life your best shot and at the end of the day sit back with a smile and be very proud of who you are

    Salmon is not a commoners food, Jamie. The much more affordable solution in under your nose: Italian dishes - relatively easy to cook and the ingredients are mostly affordable. Most of those came from poor regions as you know.

    Thank you for showing this series again. It was so moving and inspiring at the time, and it’s still moving and inspiring today. I learnt so much from this series and Jamie at Home and many others. Jamie absolutely changed my life. I’m about to buy a smallholding in the country and grow/raise as much of my own food as possible. That never would’ve happened without Jamie. I was known for having a black thumb. Any plant I had, I killed. But I was so inspired by Jamie at Home that when my sister asked me what I wanted for my birthday I said a tomato plant. She laughed her head off, but bought me 3. They grew the tastiest tomatoes I’d ever tasted and I was hooked.
    It would be really interesting if Jamie went back to catch up with all these people and see how their lives have changed. All those kids will be practically adults now, are they cooking too? Perhaps you could time it to post it once the whole series has been posted. Even a zoom call with them would be cool.

      That's exactly the purpose of this show and if that's where you are then Jamie didn't fail. I think it would be really good to follow this up again now, especially in the current climate but sadly Jamie is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He recently was on one of the morning shows trying to help people with budget cooking but got called for being an out of touch millionaire trying to lecture poor people.

    • @moniquem783
      @moniquem783 Před rokem +1

      @@PaulSmyth he definitely did not fail with me! If the people in this series learned even half as much as I did, they will be much better off than they were. I’d love to see them now.
      It is tough for him to make a difference isn’t it. I think I might have seen that morning show segment, or at least saw it mentioned. It’s so rough because of all the millionaires out there, he’s the least out of touch and the most genuinely caring one of the whole lot! You only have to watch a few of the videos he did during lockdown to see that. No crew, no studio, and he sat down with Buddy and taught us how to make soda bread and how to make something out of whatever we had. I hope he doesn’t let things like that get to him as I really think he is one of very few people who can help get regular folks through what’s coming in the next year or so. There are a couple of other chefs pulling back and using basic and affordable ingredients and experimenting with microwave cooking which is cheaper etc, but so many of the big celebrity chefs are still cooking lobster and rib eye and using truffles and caviar etc. They are the out of touch millionaires. Not Jamie.

    • @PaulSmyth
      @PaulSmyth Před rokem

      @@moniquem783 Totally agree with you. People just make excuses not to listen. You can't help those people, that's why you have to focus on the kids.
      I'm lucky, my Mum was an amazing cook and rather than kicking me out of the kitchen like most parents did, she'd tell me everything she was doing so I started taking it all in from a very young age. She started teaching me as soon as I could reach the worktop.
      The beauty is that I've done the same with my kids and they're both enthusiastic. My son is away at Uni and regularly texts me for recipe help. Once I've redecorated my kitchen I'm going to start filming recipes for him and putting them on here because it's easier than texting them lol

    It is sometimes difficult to assess the impact that an idea like this has on people. It is a great idea. The true obstacle seems to be that people do not believe they can change their lives. The inertia at the beginning is difficult to shift. Change is an ongoing effort. It is very difficult at the beginning, but it gets easier as long as you recognise the resistance you have inside against new situations. Some of these people would be partially liberated by showing them how to budget and control their finances - that is how I broke free of the position of powerlessness. Others would benefit by showing them how to manage their time. Comfort behaviours like watching TV, going to the pub, etc., steal the energy and motivation to improve our lives. Although it is not apparent here, Jamie has changed their lives. They are now have more awareness of what they are eating. Change will probably be more gradual for them over time. It is hard for people to change their habits of a lifetime. Respect to Jamie for such pure motivation.

    IMHO I think you should gift each of the ones in your class something like an Instant Pot :)
    I myself bought a Philips All-In-One cooker a couple of years ago, use it ALL the time.
    Teach them how to slow cook and pressure cook, that instantly gets rid of the time factor, they say they are time pressured, so teach them how to put stuff in a slow cooker, put it on low and off to work they go, when they get home, they have a meal fully cooked in the slow cooker, all it requires is some additional stuff they could do quickly.
    Or, they could learn to pressure cook with an electric pressure cookier (Again, Instant Pot), stick everything into it, set it to pressure cook for like 10mins, it takes 5-10mins to heat up, within 15mins they have a meal!
    You also need to deal with the price of food issue, and teach them how to stretch budgets.

    I think it’s a great idea. But here in the states fresh salmon is very expensive. I would love to have fresh fish weekly but I’m on fixed income so I’m doing great if I can afford fresh fish every few months. But cooking not heating packages is healthy and more satisfying. Personal if you can afford cigarettes you can afford other items that are better for you and your children. I pack of cigarettes here is states cost $9.25 t bone states are $9.15 a pound. And t bones are too if line, very expensive cut of beef.
