    How is this a basement apartment? It is 'not' underground and it is sitting level with the house next door which is clearly 'above' ground.

    • @LifeInCanada
      @LifeInCanada  Před 5 lety +7

      Half of the apartment is underground and half is not. It is walk-out basement. You can google it.

    • @pretoshohmoofcguy6523
      @pretoshohmoofcguy6523 Před 5 lety +3

      Typically, most basements are underground. So the phrase "basement apartment" is understood to be a separate living place other than the main floor of a Canadian home. So she was correct in identifying it as one.

    I'm writing this in November 2019 and have lived in Toronto for nearly 60 years - this is the most luxurious basement apt. I have ever seen - don't be fooled for all those people coming to Canada - the rents are at least $900 for a cold dark basement apt. - prices are out of control - do your research before coming so you won't be shocked - cheers

      Yes, lots of better basement apartments but at what cost and was it in a safe location is my question - I don't want people who see this youtube video, thinking all people in Toronto live so nicely - the rents are a minimum of $1500 for a 1 bedroom - I know because I have been looking - cheers

    My two cents to landlord: if you have a mortgage, you declared to have a single family residence on the property. Bank can take back the mortgage immediately (no more than 35 days) if they find out. Tenant in basement, ask landlord to show their driver lic and property tax bill before giving your deposit. This is the only to protest yourself from the illegal lease

  • @llIIllIlIIllX_XIillIIllIIllIll

    problem with basements are 2 things
    1- people upstairs controls the heater so in summer days they might feel the heat of the sun but down there we are freezing
    2- ceiling tiles in those houses are paper thin , you can hear noises 247

    I lived in a nice basement apartment for 15 years. I had two windows in each room (except kitchen). It wasn't an above ground basement apartment. It has a lot natural lighting and separate entrance. It's outside of Toronto. Unfortunately, my landlord wants the apartment for his son. I am moving into a smaller apartment with one large window in the bedroom and a small window in the living room its a nice place but all basement apartments are different. This was a lovely video but may be show a variety of basement apartments!

      Our landlord rents out the main floor and basement. We have lived in the basement for 13 years now. The tenant upstairs has been here even longer. It’s been fine. I wish our windows were big like this one in the video but we do have a nice big window in our front door that lets in a lot of light. We have electric baseboard heaters so it’s never cold in the winter. It can at times get quite hot in the summer without AC. No central air and the windows are too small for window units and the windows are too high up for portable ACs. So when the weather isn’t as hot in the summer we open the windows to cool the place and get fresh air and when we have a heatwave we close the windows and run fans. We run a dehumidifier during the summer to keep things from getting damp and we run a humidifier during winter as the heaters make things dry. We have made it work well for us.

  • @wbdrugstrat

    It is all about how much you are willing to spend within any given market. That is a fairly nice place. Noise from the traffic in the main floor can be an issue, specially if the folks upstairs have pets and kids. It is a great option, but beware of noise and issues not typically expected from regular apartments.

    • @LifeInCanada
      @LifeInCanada  Před 5 lety +1

      Any typical apartment could be noisy as well as condo. Depending on the neighbours you have above you in the building. They're many pros and cons of living in the basement but in some cases it could be better than living in old apartment building.

    • @wbdrugstrat
      @wbdrugstrat Před 5 lety

      @@LifeInCanada Very true. I have had my share of good experiences in basement apartments, and I would definitely recommend it. Those old houses can definitely be worst than most basement apartments out there. Main floor traffic noise have typically been some kind of issue in my experience, but there is no doubt that that goes for any attached housing situation. I am currently living in the top floor of a building, and the construction on the rooftop is often an issue for me, so it is definitely a common problem.

    Bahahahahaha!! Most of basement suites in Canada look like the serial killer's basement in "Silence Of The Lambs" - and cost more than the average person makes in a month.
    They USED to be cheaper than a regular apartment, up until about 1995....

    As you can see, she is only showing people the rich area of Toronto. Most house in Canada DON'T have nice basements like this. Only big expensive houses have nice basements. So this woman is very misleading and dishonest. Typical for someone trying to show off rentals. As well, she is not from Canada, nor is she use to these type of nice homes.

      Not too long ago, basements went for under $1000, thanks to the shortage of rentals now the rents have reached so high. For a place that has just one tiny window, which barely lets any sunlight in, this is very overpriced.

      This is walkout basement, very rare here in Canada, otherwise basements are very dark, humid n cold, but rent is cheaper than an apartment so newcomers mostly rent it in the beginning, after a year or so lots of people change it, usually get a good job, actually basement apartments are blessing for new people

    This is my true horrific experience that happened to me renting apartments in Montreal, i had to look for a new apartment to rent due to having to leave my apartment i was at due to fire damages that was caused by another tentant in apartment complex,anyhow i soon there after found a new apartment,this new apartment was renting for $1100.00 it had just been renovated and really nice and clean,however my horrific experience was just about to get much worse,just at the time the covid19 outbreak came around i was settling into my new apartment and really happy i had found a new place,so i thought...i soon began feeling very sick in this apartment and i kept trying to figure out why i was feeling this way,well to keep this short,i found out after 5 months and becoming really sick that drug dealers had rented and set up a crystal meth lab in an apartment agent to my mine and the fumes from cooking or making this crystal meth drug had been seeping into my apartment and getting me very very sick, still today i have lingering bad symptoms do to the meth poisoning, i have seen doctors and explained to them about my bad experience,i have persistance symptoms of lung problems, sinuses and bad migrains,i found out the chemical these drug dealers were using to make or cook this crystal meth was called Ether,Ether is a mix of sulfuric acid and alcohol along with other very toxic dangerous chemicals,however the Ether chemical mix has a very deceiving sweet smell not a bad smell which makes it deceiving to the sense of smell leaving you thinking how wounderful the air smells around one, because Ether is very difficult to detect in the air because it blends well with other smells,chances are one becomes poisoned before figuring out, if you`ve rented apartments before you know you will have all kinds of new smells around,how i found out there was a crystal meth lab next to my apartment is another story,by that time i had found out i had been poisoned really bad, but what was just as bad as getting poisoned sick is that when meth contamination seeps into apartments,everything becomes contaminated,i mean everything,from cloths to furniture,tv bed,frigo ect ect to the smallest objects,everything nothing escapes,i couldn`t take anything with me due to meth residue contamination,these meth lab residue spores are really really bad,they will linger in everything for years and continue making one very sick, it is very very hard to wash or get rid of,i had to dispose of everything i had,thousands of dollars lost,all my belongings,it was horrible so horrible,the land lord of the building had no idea this was going on and only later to find out, from what i have found out,these dangerous meth lab apartments are quite common,real scary,i rent from a friend now and will never again rent from strangers,i still feel sick with lasting bad symptoms and fearing for my health over time,please i would like to know if any readers reading this had similar experience,please feel free to reply,the Ether mix is of sulfuric acid and alcohol making it very toxic and poisonous,very hard to detect it`s fumes in the air because of it`s sweet smell plus these fumes and spores could travel long distance if in buildings,buildings where meth labs were set up are health risks for all tenants in building,other chemicals also used are ammonia and acetone in the making of crystal meth,Renters beware.

    Living in a basement in Toronto now don’t be deceived. It’s so cold in winter, so hot in summer, odours, landlords keep an eye on you like a hawk, dump, dark and walls are paper thin, u can actually hear voices and people upstairs throught the day- rent is damn expensive- no choice but to persevere..
