I forgot to mention in the video that my landlord has a tiny device in the basement to monitor the temperature down here and ensure that the heat is on when it starts getting cold. We also have a portable heater that we haven't really had to use so far.
There's also soundproofing in the unit and there are no kids upstairs so noise is not an issue.
Regarding costs, I'll make a video specifically on the different kinds of housing and their costs. Future tours will include costs.

Basement apartments are often hit and miss. You luckily got a recently renovated apartment with upgrades in appliances. Most rentals are not this nicely equipped. I believe the reason your kitchen window is so large is that it is the emergency exit if there is a fire or your main entrance is blocked for some reason. Otherwise most windows are usually the same size as your bedroom window. Landlords who live in the building are generally more caring about the apartment they rent out and keep on top of repairs - generally. Your have a lovely apartment.

Thanks for sharing. My thoughts for those who are considering basements:
- Ensure there is a return air vent in the apartment, else avoid.
- Never rent where a house is at the bottom of a hill or slope due to potential flooding.
- Always have a working carbon monoxide detector in your apartment as you'll be in close proximity of the furnace.
- Ensure there is an accessible window in the apartment for safety reasons.
- Remember you have no control over the heating and cooling. So the space maybe hotter or cooler than desired.

I live in a basement apartment too! East York. I love where I live. The key to living well in a basement apartment is making it cozy, finding a place with big windows/lots of windows, bright WARM lighting and a CO alarm.

Just a piece of trivia: Quartz countertops are nice looking, but they're cheaper for a reason: they can't stand heat nor acidic substances, so you can't (shouldn't) really use it to put any object (pans, jars or food containers) that's come out of the oven/stove recently and you should also be very careful with food preparation, because some foods that release acidic substances can stain the countertop if not cleaned immediately. Granite is much more resistant in that sense, thus also more expensive.
