Perfect timing for me. Busy starting my apartment searching soon. One thing I didn’t hear you mention but I might have missed it is how long it takes to find an apartment from viewing to moving in. For example, if I view a unit on the weekend and like it, how soon can I expect to move in?
It depends on the particular unit. Oftentime the landlord will have a target date, e.g. March 1st for moving in, which is likely within a few weeks since viewing. But tenants can sometimes negotiate an earlier move-in date, e.g. at the end of the previous month.
When I was searching for my place in Toronto in 2014, my late Dad and I did a lot of google checking for a neighborhood. Google maps are amazing when it comes to realize where are stores, public transit options etc. This is crucial if someone cannot see place. Street view is also helpful.
Now rents in Toronto are very high. I was using Zillow or similar to check for options. It is important to realize what are other costs like hydro, this is extremely important.
I agree, googlemaps is so useful. Before I even decide to visit a place I also like to use streetview to get a feel of the area.
@@LivinginCanada also its good to know median for studio and 1bed to filter out offers that are too cheap. Those are not occasions but suspicion. If something is too good to be true it is.
Good point. The super too-good-to-be-true cheap ones ($900, $1,000) are usually rooms within a house rented out or shared basement apartments located an hour or so from city centre. I would say that decent studios in a radius of 20-30 min from downtown Toronto are priced at $1,500 these days. Will continue doing my research and update!
@@LivinginCanada Numbeo you mentioned is a good place to check median for studio and 1bdr or at least have Excel sheet with offers from let's say Zillow to see numbers. Anything way below or above median is suspicious. I once searched for junior 1bdr. Offers were financially good for one unit was dirty as in TV shows about cleaning and another place got terrible reviews. It is good to check even Google reviews of a building and rental company as well as bedbugs reports. Once place with good rent was a bedbugs colony. Also it is crucial to check for walkability and transit options. Cars are expensive, especially in a city where almost all parking lots are not free

I think if you want to live in Toronto either by buying a home, condo or just renting, have a good cash flow, Toronto is an expensive city and research the neighborhood because there are some bad areas. I’d suggest taking public transportation, driving around Toronto is crazy unless you enjoy sitting in traffic, not to mention the construction throughout the city. Better idea would find a place outside the GTA, where you can actually afford a home and have a good size yard, if you like that kind of thing.
I definitely considered that, until I decided to settle for a small condo in Toronto (20 min subway ride from downtown) instead. If I ever need a larger place, I'll consider moving out!

Hi can you make a video on top neighbor hood for a family set up where 2 bhk is available? Costs , types of properties that we can rent especially when you have a kid and elders. Also why is it so difficult to find a 2 bed 2 bath house? It’s always 1 bath .

It seems that that’s an uncommon combo (2 bed+2 baths). I guess you’d need to look at 3 beds instead to get the two baths.
Searching for a good condo in Toronto is an absolute nightmare. It took me 3 weeks to find a decent condo. I was getting depressed if I will find a place or not.

I would suggest to rent an apartment once you're here. Temporarily stay at a friend's place/airbnb, and take your time to view apartments and meet people face to face. Never transfer money before you see the unit yourself and are convinced it's legit

When you live on budget it is kind of hard to choose the neighborhood. You just have to go with your budget unfortunately.
That's true, the reality. With a smaller budget you have fewer options. It takes a lot of searching to find something acceptable on a smaller budget.

Without specifying any exact locatoon, I’d say starting at $700-800 for a room/basement unit on outskirts of Toronto to min $2,000 for a studio/1-bed in the city center. I’m not familiar with prices for shared rooms, perhaps someone else can add that info here.

Thank you! It's possible, but I would say rare. If you're lucky, you can find a sublet exactly for that timeframe. But it might be difficult as a tourist, because usually landlords would ask for documents like employment, credit check, and references. If I were you I would consider airbnb for that timeframe as airbnb often offers special pricing for shorter periods.

If you want a cheap apartment, here is a creative strategy. Buy the Condo or the Apt bldg, and then rent it back to yourself for cheap! easy!

@@SophiaOkeke764 try more to the east side of Toronto. I have family who lives about 40 mins outside of Toronto - a region called Durham. Cheaper and more space for your buck. Lately tho it has been getting expensive like the downtown core of Toronto, for now it is still cheaper. 😌

$1,500 for a family of I assume 3-4 people is difficult if not impossible to find. At the best, in Toronto, you could find a basement unit rented out by a landlord that allows a family to occupy it. That would be your best bet. If you want an above the ground apartment, you'd need to venture far out. Most 1 bedroom apartments in Toronto cost around $2,300 < per month.

Definitely not, unfortunately! For $800 the best you could get is a basement further from the city (but increasingly impossible to get good ones!), so more realistic would be a shared basement.

Too be honest in today’s Canada. The economy sucks trash and with the high rates of immigrants and a big housing shortage in this country I highly doubt a cheap apartment would be possible to find in both Vancouver and Toronto. After the pandemic Canada went downhill financially and it’s only gonna get worse it’s a third world country. The cheapest you would get here is like a 500$ basement with no window and just a fucking box. I like the video but I think finding a cheap apartment in here is impossible. To the people wanting to move to Canada do not.
