- In this video I discuss how I have developed a series of concertina sketchbooks to accompany and inform the development of a series of paintings about my local landscapes. I have developed 5 other concertinas (one for each subject area: winter moors, heather moors, edge lands, spring woodland, 'My side of town' panoramic). In this video I share the pre-preparation of the 6th and final concertina for this body of work: Autumn woodland.

I have shared the creation of other concertina sketchbooks previously:

It's here: czcams.com/play/PLnyTfaOwD3KtlfJ3Ih8E-TxbvTbhenSBq.html. The approach is also covered in detail within my online course: lizackerley.podia.com/making-your-mark
looks great, thank you for sharing
thanks for watching Conny, we will see what the next stage brings!
It's always lovely to watch this process, thank you!
I’m glad you enjoyed it- thought I needed to share as it ‘s my last concertina for this body of work!- felt like I needed to mark the occasion!!
It’s Saturday pm here and I was wondering what I was going to do with myself and then I looked on Utube and Yippie, new video from Liz😎😎 so fun, can’t wait to see the next steps in your sketch book Liz😎😎😎😎😎😎
Thanks Terry I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so very much ..,. this has been wonderful seeing your thought process in action 💕
Thanks Dorothy I’m glad you enjoyed it.
This is a new process for me. Seems like a genius way to get through blank page paralysis.
I would love to watch this real time and learn how you chose which papers to put down, etc.
I know this is just the “pre” stage but I actually really like it as is!! Does that show my amateur status?😂
I wish I lived in Europe. All my favorite online artists seem to be from England!
Creating a background is one way of keeping it loose so actually it’s best if there isn’t too much thinking. Otherwise it gets overly contrived.
@@LizAckerley Thank you for responding! Great reminder!! Less thinking = less contrived…and MORE FUN!! ❤️
@@BB-nz5sk exactly. And to keep things fun and experimental have a ‘what if?’ Mindset
Thank you for the video, love the colors, the sketchbooks. Have fun in nature. Greatings from Belgium. Patricia.
You are welcome. So glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoying your video.so like the collage and vibrant colors 🌹🌺🌸☘️
Thanks Joan!
You make me smile when you laugh at yourself Liz. You seemed very relaxed in your video. But even more for me AUTUMN COLOURS the Liz Ackerley way Yeah. I'm going to be stuck in fir the next 3 weeks after my spinal surgery on Thursday and not able to drive for 6 MONTHS so see you all in the spring....joking but true. So between yourself and Angela Fehr., I'll be inspired by you both picking inspiring ideas for Autumn and Winter sketches. Because one of the prohibited things is stretching , lifting and so on. So it's all down to smaller works fir the next 3 months. And thank you soooooo much Liz for this video and others you have made for Autumn.
You are welcome Leila and all the very best for your surgery. Many of the studies can be done working small so it will be good for you to get absorbed in that.
Thank you I truly loved it.
Look forward to seeing you working on it.
Thanks - I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Great to see your process. Very much looking forward to how you work into them outside. That is the part I get stuck on.
Thanks Mary - working over them is the fun part!- I’ll certainly show some of the working over the pages .
So joyous. Love the colours you are using too. I hope you will be showing the progression of this sketchbook - in use- in a later video. Thank you
Thanks Anna I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Liz, I'm watching this three months later... love it and am inspired to see your working so fast in the concertina. Instead of cello tape, try washi tape, if you can find a particularly sticky one. I've also had great good luck with gluing washi papers (strong rice paper) across the joins using acrylic medium. It doesn't change with the hair dryer. Thanks. I really enjoy your videos.
Hi Jo thanks for your comments and I’m glad you enjoy the videos. I actually don’t mind the cello tape in general- However Your washi paper sounds interesting. I do have some rice paper that I use for text etc but not tried it across the joins- yes the acrylic mediums won’t be affected by the heat. I’ll have to try it next time!
Love these!
Thank you
Thanks Diane
Love this, I seem to be able to do this part really well liz it’s the next part I struggle with x
Thanks Susan- I’m looking forward to getting out there!
great, Liz. thank you. I enjoyed watching your process. Do you find you have a default angle for your collage (and maybe marks)? I watched and noticed something I find comes up for me... I really like a gentle angle off to the right of vertical! you seemed to do the same...!?
Thanks Michelle - that’s an interesting question!- I certainly think that I have a preference for angles rather than completely vertical or horizontal- somehow creates more movement and is more organic. But I didn’t realise I have a right balance. Ha naively because I knew I was responding intuitively I assumed it was random!!
Is it not possible to also paint on the underside of a concertina book please? Sorry if that’s a foolish question 😬. I’m currently working on the topside of my book but have been vaguely assuming I would turn over and work on the underside too. I love your channel btw 🥰
Hi Jacki thank you for your comments. I am so glad that you are enjoying my channel. I have never worked on the reverse side of concertinas. As you can see, I throw quite a bit at them and therefore I prefer to reinforce the back and not work on it. I use SeaWhite books which are excellent but probably wouldn’t stand up to double side treatment ( although I’ve not tried). I suppose it depends on what thickness of paper but I personally wouldn’t want to or see the need to unless that is your preference. I hope that helps.
What are the dimensions of your sketchbook folded? I am guessing 4x8 inches🤓
Each page is 9 x 17 cm - it’s a Seawhite of Brighton pocket concertina
