Haha! Oh yes, I was getting my videos mixed up. I first watched your video about your new printer and then went to this video. I'm really thinking about getting the same printer you just bought. I hadn't yet took the plunge on making my own edibles and I purchase them from someone else. That money adds up quickly though and I could have bought several printers by now. 😂 Thank you for all your helpful advice! ❤️
Hi! So glad I found your video. It was such a huge help for me, since it's my first time using edible prints... I I stuck my prints onto fondant with Tylose,my question is.. If I need it to dry and harden what should I place it on? Cardboard? Baking paper? I don't want it to start cracking
I will leave the fondant / edible image out to dry on a cutting board or parchment paper if it has to dry flat. If it has to dry with a curve to it so it will fit on the side of the cake, I will dry it on a styrofoam cake dummy the size of the cake it is going on!
Hi, pls help, i dont know what to do. I have printed in wafer paper, my frosting is whipped cream, i cannot direct the print to cake so i need to make base, i cannot make fondant because its rainy days here it will get moist, so im planning to make melted white chocolate as base of print then stick chocolate on cake. Is that ok? Does it not gonna melt. Thanks, hope you help me
Hmmmm, I have actually never tried adhering it to chocolate, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it's too hot, you will have issues with it getting soft and / or melting so you have to be careful with that. But if you put melted chocolate on wafer paper, it may mess it up. Have you tried something like gumpaste? It dries pretty hard and you may not have as many issues with it.
Omg you’ve helped my sooo much with making my first real cake for my husbands birthday 😍 Can you make the images and put them on the fondant and just let them sit in the fridge until it’s ready for the cake? So I can prep them a few days before. Or will it harden to much ?
You don't need to refrigerate the edible images until they are ready to use. You can prep them ahead of time, just make sure that if you're putting them on the side of a cake that you dry them on the side of a styrofoam cake dummy or something with a curve to it so they won't crack when you put them on the cake. (I think I may have said that at the end of the video, you can check that out to see what I mean!) Did that answer your question?
Karolyns Kakes yes I did see that but I was wondering do you need to wrap them in something so they want harden ? How long in advance can you make the images ?
@@Harleybostic OK I hope this isn't confusing. With edible images, once you print them, you'll want them wrapped up really well so the icing sheets won't dry out. If you want to put the pictures on fondant and want them to get hard, you'll want them exposed to air. Wrapping them up will keep them soft. I wouldn't make them more than a week in advance. I'm not sure how the ink on the icing paper will hold up when exposed to air for a long time.
I’m so glad I found your video. Thank you so much for making this! I had no idea that this was possible to do at home. I thought edible images were printed on a special, comercial bakery type of printer. I happen to have the exact same printer so I got super excited to find out I can do this at home. I’m just wondering if you know if it’s safe to use the edible ink after using regular ink?
I'm so glad this helped! You want to get a brand new printer that has never used regular ink in it. If it had regular ink, then it won't be edible, even if you put edible ink in the printer because of residual ink residue.
Absolutely beautiful !! I am doing my granddaughter’s first birthday and I have small 1 inch one and 1 1/2 inch edible images round to go on cake pops how far in advance can I add hear them to fondant so I can have them ready to put on the cake pops Thank you again for your wonderful amazing videos.
I do it all the time! You have to make sure you control the environment where you bring your cake out of the fridge. I talk about it in this video: czcams.com/video/vBKi-O7v98w/video.html
Super informative video. I’m so anxious to try this. I make cheesecakes(no-bake). Do you think this method would work? Or would it work if I put the printed sheet on when the cheesecake is frozen?
I have never put these on a cheesecake before. I don't see why you couldn't do it though! The only thing is that you don't want any condensation to form on the cake, which can ruin the image. So that's why I like to put it on a fondant backing. It helps protect it!
Loved the tip! It’s gonna be my first time using edible images on a whipped cream cake Please reply if I should keep it in fridge or stick it at the time of delivery?
Be careful putting it on whipped cream as it has a higher water content and can distort the image. I would wait until the last minute to put the image on that cake!
This was such a great tutorial and thank you so much for sharing such helpful tips! What would be an alternative to piping gel? Could I use Crisco ? I need to apply this to a buttercream cake. Can I apply the images to cake and leave it in the fridge a few hours ahead/overnight before the delivery?
@@bethechange1234 I personally never apply images directly to buttercream, I put the image on a thin piece of fondant like I show in this video. That helps put a protective barrier between the image and the icing and also helps prevent it from wrinkling. But you can definitely apply it directly to buttercream. I never used crisco, but I believe that would work. If it's not hot or humid, there shouldn't be an issue refrigerating it overnight. If it's humid or hot outside, you may have issues with condensation, which could ruin the image. So you have to be careful.
@@KarolynsKakes thank you so much Karolyn for your prompt reply💗 Actually I meant about applying the edible image to a fondant backing which will then be attached to a buttercream cake. I’m based in the Gulf, so my concern was if the edible image would bleed or get soggy in the refrigerator if left overnight. Or is it best to apply it to the cake just before delivery.
Hi! I loved your video! But I did want to ask if you don’t want to buy a printer just yet is there anywhere they sell imagines or you can print some out? I live in Ga

I have a question not pertaining to this video but I talked to you before about the cake settling. I baked my cakes and then freeze them. Should I let the cake fully saw out before? I fill it and put the crumb coat and then let it set. Or can I do all that while it's frozen?
I do, I keep my unused fondant in a ziplock bag and stored in an airtight container (Tupperware or lock-n-lock). I know to toss it when it gets too hard when it’s not warm!
Hi thank you for a great video. I am just wondering how long in advance can you put the edible image on a fondant cake? Would the images be okay to apply the day before serving the cake? Thank you so much in advance.
Tamara Panic I have put the images on a cake 2 days in advance and they were fine. I find that when they are adhered to the fondant and then put on the cake like I did in the video, that they hold up really well. I haven’t done it more than 2 days in advance. But they should be fine if you do it the day before!
I use sugar sheets in this video. I'm sure you could use wafer paper, but not sure how it will hold up afterwards. If you do it, let me know how it goes!
Thank you! Yes, the edible images can be eaten. I apply the edible images to the fondant with piping gel. And then when I adhere that to the cake, I use piping gel or water on the back of the fondant.
@@KarolynsKakes Awhh great! Thank you so much! Another question, what if it's a buttercream cake, do you think the topper can be added on the buttercream once refrigerated?.. Thank you so much.. that'd be much appreciated! ♡
Karolyn I just purchased an icing sheet from my bakery because I haven’t got an icing machine , the images look like it’s on something like fondant. What is that do you know the lady in the bakery gave it to me in a silver sheet x
The images probably have an acetate backing. You peel that away from the image and can put it on a piece of fondant or directly onto the cake. The silver envelope it comes in helps to protect it from drying out quickly!
I've never used sugar syrup, but I'm sure you can! Just don't use too much, you don't want it to dissolve the icing paper. And my friend puts these on Swiss Meringue buttercream all the time, so I know it can be done!
Hi, Karolyn, I believe you may have already answered this question, but here's my concern - I am using an edible image of a dinosaur as a topper. I will be placing it on fondant to give it more stability. How far in advance can I make this topper? I know that if you are placing the image on the cake, you don't have to wait - but since this will be a topper, I was wondering if I could do it days in advance so it will be nice and dry. Also, I'll be doing cookies with a dinosaur image printed on frosting sheets - any idea what they taste like? I've never done this before! Thanks :)
Hey girl, I've made edible image on fondant toppers 3-4 days in advance and didn't have any problems. Now, I use high quality paper and ink from Icing Images, some of the cheaper brands may not last as long. And I'm not a cookie person, so I'm not sure what to recommend for those, sorry about that!
Yes, that's what I did. Just make sure you NEVER use regular ink in the printer. Only use edible ink cartridges and have a separate printer for regular printing. So make sure you don't buy a used printer since there was already regular ink running through it. It has to be brand new never used. :)
Karolyns Kakes thank you so much!!! I’m a newbie to game( baking and decorating cakes) I really love baking and I have a passion for it... I just want to get better!!! Do you have any advice for a newbie? 😊
Thank you! A little goes a long way with Tylose, so maybe a 1/2 teaspoon. After you mix it in, give it some time to stiffen up a little before you use it. :)
Whats difference fron piping GEL, and Edible glue? Also, i once got edible printout and it WAS REALLY DIFFICULT to handle it. It kept stickig and wanting ro bend were it wiluld switch together. Sorta like tape when handling it. You seem to have no issue handling it bacl and forth as if it WERE TRUE PAPER.
Piping gel is usually made from sugar and cornstarch. It is sometimes called edible glue. I've also made edible glue by adding some gumpaste mix to water. I think the piping gel is best, but that may be because I'm so used to working with it. As for your sticky paper issue, are you in a humid climate? If so, there could be some challenges. I believe I filmed this video in the warmer months, but I always keep my house cool to keep issues like that under control.
How do you use the edible printer too print out lettering on your cake like Happy Birthday or someone’s name etc. And what program do you use to design it so it fits on the cake exactly how you want it?
How long do the images remain viable in a plastic bag or saran wrap in the fridge? Have you experimented to see how long they remain tasty and vibrant?
The best place to store them would be in the silver foil envelope that the icing sheets come in. (I always save those so I can store images.) If you use a regular plastic ziplock bag, they may be prone to dry out faster. So I don't recommend printing until a few days before you need them. If you want to store printed images and don't have the foil envelope, I recommend wrapping them in plastic wrap, sticking them in a ziplock bag and leaving it at room temperature. No need to refrigerate them. In my experience, it stays fresh and the color stays vibrant for weeks if wrapped up correctly!
Does the once a week print pertain yo both a regular printer and a printer specifically for edible prints? I actually just bought an edible...from amazon. Still in the box. Not alot of business so far. Do you have a video on how you established clientele or was it all by word of mouth. I know you have been doing for 20 years....
You only have to run the test pages on an edible ink printer. This is because the edible ink tends to dry out and clog the print head if you don't consistently have the ink running through the system. With regular printers, that's not necessary. And I started making cakes for friends and family. And those friends would take my cakes to their parties and the people at those parties would start ordering from me, and so on. It mostly spread slowly by word of mouth. But I happened to get into this before the cake craze, so by the time cakes became popular, I had clientele. It's kind of like how if you started a CZcams channel in 2012, it was much easier to grow than it is today. It can still be done, it just requires a little more time and effort!
Hello! Nice cake. I don’t understand it’s your printer a regular printer or a edible printer? I would like to buy an edible printer, but I am only going to use it once every 4 months or for a longer time, 😬so, what do you recommend me to do? Buy a regular printer or buy an edible printer and remove the cartridges if I don’t use it ? Thank you
The printer is a regular printer that has never been used with regular ink. You can't use your regular printer and just keep swapping out the cartridges because the regular ink is still in the system and then it won't be edible. So I bought a brand new printer on Amazon (I linked it below in the description.) and have ONLY used edible ink and edible ink cartridges in it. I NEVER put regular non edible ink cartridges in that printer. I have a separate printer that I use for every day printing. If you're only going to use it every few months, it may not be worth the investment. Because you have to keep printing on the edible printer to keep the ink flowing through the system so it doesn't dry out. This is edible ink, so it will dry out and clog the printer head if you don't keep using it. Before I bought the printer, I was paying one of my local cake friends to print edible images for me. Which worked out well when I was only needing edible images a few times a year. Now I use them weekly. I hope that helps!
Karolyns Kakes Thank you! Have you been using your regular printer with edible ink for a long time, have you had any issues with it? I am asking you because I read that when we use regular printer with edible ink, it may clog it’s printheads and harm it’s components too. However, I also read that edible printers are basically the same as regular printers. I don’t know what is correct 😏😖😩I really want to buy one, but I don’t know which one. Thank you for your response.
@@delfina8477 from what I know, there isn't such a thing as an "edible printer" that won't clog. The edible printer system uses a never used before regular printer and ONLY edible ink, cartridges and paper in it, which makes it an edible printer. Since the edible ink and cartridges are susceptible to clogging, you must print a test paper at least once a week to keep the ink moving through the system and prevent clogging.
You want your printer that prints edible images to be non toxic. Regular printer ink is toxic to consume. So if regular ink has run through the printer system, it's very difficult to clear it all out. (Think about it, would you want to eat an edible image that may have residue of toxic ink on it?) It's just safer to keep your edible printer and your regular printer separate. I did post a video on a new printer I got from Icing Images. It wasn't very expensive for the whole system and it works great! :)
I refrigerate all of my cakes and haven't had a problem with it. But I am able to control the environment and keep condensation issues to a minimum. Where are you located? In the summer months, I keep my house and car VERY cold to prevent the cakes from sweating too much. If you do have issues with this, I would recommend putting the images on as late as possible after the cake has come to room temperature.
Would you recommend a printer for someone who's just starting out who really wouldn't be printing that many edible images ??? Like me. I just started 6 months ago. I would need some edible images for a cake coming up. But I honestly don't get many orders yet. I was thinking of buying one but I'm not sure if I should since I won't use it much.
Love your video. I was wondering if the edible images are resistant to heat. (i.e. Stick it on first and then bake the sticker together with the desserts)
Hi Karolyn, just wondering if you ever have a problem with condensation on the edible images. (or does the fondant prevent that) Also, would you happen to have ever done a cake in celebration of citizenship? I am looking for examples.
Hey! I haven't had condensation issues. But that is because I always control the environment the cake is in. I never shock the cake by bringing it from a cold fridge to a warm room. It always goes into air conditioning. This video explains it! czcams.com/video/vBKi-O7v98w/video.html But if you deal with some condensation, then yes, the fondant will help protect the image. At least a little bit! I haven't done citizenship cakes, so unfortunately I can't help you there. Sorry about that!
Well, it could look glossy because it was warm out and it's sweating a little LOL If you want to make your fondant shiny, you can take a little bit of shortening on a paint brush or paper towel and wipe that around the cake!
Can you put wate in the cartridges maybe running the water through might drain the ink in the printer so it won’t get hard or it might break the printer idk I’m just throwing stuff out there
Unfortunately, no. This is special ink made for the printer. If you use food coloring, it would most likely clog the print head and could be a headache.
Not a dumb question! I assume you mean like a picture of you or someone else? If so, then yes. The quality with edible images isn't as clear as a regular printer (not by much though). It's still good!
You should be able to. The only thing I’ve had issues with is printing money. Even fake money. Sometimes printers won’t print it. It’s so annoying! I have to make it smaller than regular money size for it to print. 🤷🏻♀️
Hi! Is it possible to just directly place the edible paper image on top of buttercream frosting instead of having to place it on top of fondant and then use it? Also would it make a difference if I don’t do the fondant thing?
Jessy Kane you can place the images directly onto Buttercream. I have found that sometimes the edges curl up if I don’t adhere it to fondant first. So that’s why I prefer to do it this way!
Is it okay to place your items with images in the refrigerator until your customer arrives? Or what if its the next day? Will refrigeration damage the image?
I don't have issues with it, but I am in a cool environment. Is it humid where you are? If it is hot and humid, you have to make sure that you gradually bring the cake to room temperature to avoid condensation from forming on the cake. If condensation forms, it could ruin the images. Right now, I am near Philly and it's freezing here. Cakes love the cold weather so there's no worries for me now. But in the Summer, I keep my house very cold so when I take it out of the refrigerator, it's in a cool environment and no water droplets form on the cake.
I make sure there is piping gel on the entire back of the image before I adhere it to fondant. This video helps to explain: czcams.com/video/nu4pWkBH1Fo/video.html
Yes, I have done that before. But I find that the image can sometimes curl on the edges when it's not adhered to fondant first. Even though I put piping gel all over the back on the image on the buttercream, it still tends to lift. But maybe you'll have better luck with it, let me know how it goes!

Thank you! When I deliver cakes in the warm weather, I make sure my air conditioning in my car is ON BLAST to help prevent the fondant from getting sticky. Here's a video where I explain: czcams.com/video/bBPjGzEMZaw/video.html
Thanks for sharing! I'm sold on investing in this 😂
I'm glad I could help! I was nervous about getting this system, but it really is so easy to use! You just have to make sure you are diligent about printing weekly so the ink doesn't dry out in the printer head.

I love watching your videos! You give great, helpful info! Is there a certain program you use when printing your images?
I think I answered my own question. I looked on icing images website and saw iprint is their free program to use.
@@tinachesser6419 Yes, I actually just got a new printer from them and I'm going to start using the iPrint and see how that works. I was just using Microsoft Word to print my images in this video. :)
@@tinachesser6419 Yes! That's the reason why I invested in the system myself. You save money in the long run.
@@KarolynsKakes thank you!
I love 2 make this kind of things..... You explain very well. Thank you🙏🙏🙏
My pleasure 😊
Super helpful!! The fondant Base is a great idea!
It really does help prevent the ink from bleeding and helps the image keep its shape!
Great video. Very helpful if you never've done it before.
Omg you’ve helped my sooo much with making my first real cake for my husbands birthday 😍
Can you make the images and put them on the fondant and just let them sit in the fridge until it’s ready for the cake? So I can prep them a few days before. Or will it harden to much ?
You don't need to refrigerate the edible images until they are ready to use. You can prep them ahead of time, just make sure that if you're putting them on the side of a cake that you dry them on the side of a styrofoam cake dummy or something with a curve to it so they won't crack when you put them on the cake. (I think I may have said that at the end of the video, you can check that out to see what I mean!)
Did that answer your question?

Hello Karolyn,
Once you apply all the fondant and edible images can you place it back in the fridge until it is ready for pick up?
Thanks for your video! 🥰
Why are you so funny? 😂 Lol I love it!
Thhhhhhhhankkk you!! I think I'm hysterical! LOL
enjoyed watching your video very informative
Loved the tip! It’s gonna be my first time using edible images on a whipped cream cake
Please reply if I should keep it in fridge or stick it at the time of delivery?
Be careful putting it on whipped cream as it has a higher water content and can distort the image. I would wait until the last minute to put the image on that cake!
@@KarolynsKakes thank you so much
This was such a great tutorial and thank you so much for sharing such helpful tips! What would be an alternative to piping gel? Could I use Crisco ? I need to apply this to a buttercream cake. Can I apply the images to cake and leave it in the fridge a few hours ahead/overnight before the delivery?
Are you applying the image to fondant or directly to Buttercream?
@@KarolynsKakes I’m applying the image to buttercream
@@bethechange1234 yeah it is pretty humid down there, so to reduce the risk of condensation forming, I would apply it before you deliver it!

Where do you get the actual images? Do you ever worry about copyright issues?
I have a question not pertaining to this video but I talked to you before about the cake settling. I baked my cakes and then freeze them. Should I let the cake fully saw out before? I fill it and put the crumb coat and then let it set. Or can I do all that while it's frozen?
I let them completely thaw before I fill them. I explain in this video:

Thank you so much for teaching great technique! I was wondering if you could re-use the left over fondant since it’s mixed with tyrose? 🧐🧐🧐
Thank you for this video! Do you use wafer paper or sugar sheets?
I use sugar sheets in this video. I'm sure you could use wafer paper, but not sure how it will hold up afterwards. If you do it, let me know how it goes!
I have this question too. My printer came with both. So it f I'm backing the image with fondant will either work? Have either of you tried this?
Can you tell me if there is a way you can make an edible image on a 8.5x14 cake sheet paper?
Hi. Where do you get your software from for your images please
Hi. Lovely presentation! Can the edible topper be eaten? Also before applying on, do you paste it with water?
Thank you! Yes, the edible images can be eaten. I apply the edible images to the fondant with piping gel. And then when I adhere that to the cake, I use piping gel or water on the back of the fondant.

Can I paste edible image on dry fondant?
Sewing pins they are markers so your lines stay even and to keep parts inner together
Thank you for the video, very informative...just to confirm I can buy a regular printer and just buy edible ink and paper?
Yes, that's what I did. Just make sure you NEVER use regular ink in the printer. Only use edible ink cartridges and have a separate printer for regular printing. So make sure you don't buy a used printer since there was already regular ink running through it. It has to be brand new never used. :)
Karolyns Kakes thank you so much!!! I’m a newbie to game( baking and decorating cakes) I really love baking and I have a passion for it... I just want to get better!!! Do you have any advice for a newbie? 😊
Awesome video! How much tylose powder do you add for a strip of fondant in your video?
Thanks for the info
How do you use the edible printer too print out lettering on your cake like Happy Birthday or someone’s name etc. And what program do you use to design it so it fits on the cake exactly how you want it?
Here's a video showing how. I use Microsoft Word!
czcams.com/video/xUii3ruoa3A/video.html
Awesomeness thank you 💕
You're welcome Natalia!🙌🙌
@Karolyns Kakes thanks so much!!
Hello!
Karolyns Kakes thank you for your help.
Thanks for the video. I have the same printer, but I have been using it for regular printing job. Why can’t I use it with edible ink?
You want your printer that prints edible images to be non toxic. Regular printer ink is toxic to consume. So if regular ink has run through the printer system, it's very difficult to clear it all out. (Think about it, would you want to eat an edible image that may have residue of toxic ink on it?) It's just safer to keep your edible printer and your regular printer separate. I did post a video on a new printer I got from Icing Images. It wasn't very expensive for the whole system and it works great! :)
Thank you so much for the explanation. It’s all about health and safety. I will check out the other printed you shared.
Can we put the edible imge covered cake in the fridge? Does the inage bleed due to condensation?
That would be a waste. You can actually order images directly through Icing Images website or other places like Etsy.
@@KarolynsKakes ok thank you.. I'll save it for later on then

I was wondering if the edible images are resistant to heat. (i.e. Stick it on first and then bake the sticker together with the desserts)
You don't want to put the images in the oven. The sheets are made of sugar, so they will melt in extreme heat.
Wow! Great!!
Can I cut a picture out if a greeting card, put it on fondant, and apply to cake?
That may be a little tricky as the cardstock may not stick to fondant.
This video explains it!
czcams.com/video/vBKi-O7v98w/video.html
But if you deal with some condensation, then yes, the fondant will help protect the image. At least a little bit!
I haven't done citizenship cakes, so unfortunately I can't help you there. Sorry about that!

How do you get the measuring ruler in Microsoft word
You have to click on "VIEW", then click the box next to RULER to have the ruler show.
Thank you
Hi Karolyn! just watching some videos and ???? How do you keep your (red) fondant glossy?
Well, it could look glossy because it was warm out and it's sweating a little LOL
If you want to make your fondant shiny, you can take a little bit of shortening on a paint brush or paper towel and wipe that around the cake!
That happened to me but I washed mine with warm water and dry them and they worked.
Can you put wate in the cartridges maybe running the water through might drain the ink in the printer so it won’t get hard or it might break the printer idk I’m just throwing stuff out there
There's actually a cleaning system, I will have to film that the next time I do it. It cleans out the printer head.
Is it possible to subtitute the edible ink with food coloring?
Unfortunately, no. This is special ink made for the printer. If you use food coloring, it would most likely clog the print head and could be a headache.
Hi Karolyn,
This may be a dumb question. I'm wondering, can you print actual photo images on your edible printer and, if yes, how's the quality?
TIA 😊
Not a dumb question! I assume you mean like a picture of you or someone else? If so, then yes. The quality with edible images isn't as clear as a regular printer (not by much though). It's still good!
@@KarolynsKakes
Awesome! Thanks Karolyn. 😁
You can print anything on that printer right? Like the LV pattern right?
You should be able to. The only thing I’ve had issues with is printing money. Even fake money. Sometimes printers won’t print it. It’s so annoying! I have to make it smaller than regular money size for it to print. 🤷🏻♀️

Can I use edible glue instead because I have no piping gel ?
That should work, or you can use light corn syrup!
Which piping gel you used mamm ?? Transparent glazing gel ??
Yes, it's clear piping gel, I linked it in the description below the video!
How do you keep image from bubbling up on fondant? Mine seems to always bubble after it sits on cake for awhile
I make sure there is piping gel on the entire back of the image before I adhere it to fondant.

@@KarolynsKakes Thanks
Can I use the piping gel and place directly on the buttercream instead of using fondant?
Yes, I have done that before. But I find that the image can sometimes curl on the edges when it's not adhered to fondant first. Even though I put piping gel all over the back on the image on the buttercream, it still tends to lift. But maybe you'll have better luck with it, let me know how it goes!
