  • I love my Givi V47 top box, but I wanted to add auxiliary brake lights for better visibility on my BMW R1200RT motorcycle. Givi does make the E135 brake light kit, but it was more money than I wanted to spend, so I sourced some generic red LED lights and wired my own lights. In this video I'll show you how I routed the wires, installed the lights, and programmed a flashing brake light circuit using the HEX ezCAN device.

You were right to ignore the Givi kit. I used it with a V47 on the back of my Buell. The connection between the box and the rack was unreliable but even worse was the connection between the bottom of the box and the lid. You had to be very careful how you closed the box - even then I would frequently get to the end of a ride and find the lights weren't working because something had moved. I fitted the box on my 1200RT two days ago........without the lights. Interesting to see your solution.

Wow, that's good information. I did look at that kit and those connections appeared a bit fragile to me. There's no sense in doing all this work only to have an unreliable installation. Well, if you decide to try this route I know the connections are solid. And if you want more info on the HEX ezCAN, I did a video on that here: czcams.com/video/0wyMCMryQ6c/video.html

Thanks for this (and all your other) videos for the 2013 RT. Very clean installation. I have the same bike (same year and color!) and a GIVI V-47 as well, which I transferred from my previous Triumph Tiger Explorer. I think the V-47 looks good on the RT, and when I had both bikes, it was nice to be able to transfer from one to the other. My GIVI has red lenses though, so I wonder if it would be better to use white LED's for it. The red lenses would hide them a bit better. The ezCan options for flashing are a nice feature. I have often wondered if the brake light is visible enough under the V-47. So far so good!

Yeah, some of the boxes did come with red lenses. In that case you could easily find white LED lights, which I believe are inherently brighter anyway.

super idea: I just looked for the LED; it seams there are no more? what was the price? and do you think for alternatives.
    Thank you Mike

I just looked at my original link (amzn.to/3IUCi3H) and they are in stock. However, it may be that if you are located in a different country they will not ship there. In that case maybe you can look for a similar style in a length of about 4.5 inches. There's nothing special about that brand I used.

@@tinderboxarts Currently unavailable. probable because I am in Switzerland; I also tried for Germany. what a pity. I just tried with US zip code; yes it is on stock

Well, don't give up--I'm sure you can find these same lights elsewhere. You might try the "aliexpress" shopping site which contains countless Chinese sourced items. Maybe there are other options even locally in Switzerland. You can also purchase LED strip lights which can be cut down to the length you need. There is some option for you, I'm sure of it.
