I will never understand parents who shrug off borderline psychotic behavior of their kids as them just being "young and naive." At that age, that behavior is exactly what the parents should be correcting. This is a classic case of bad parenting. I would go as far as straight-up calling them bad parents.

Yup, 100% agree. They are incredibly bad parents, and the thing that got me was that in the end of the story they were _still_ desperately scrambling for a way to forgive Lisa, at OP's expense. Lisa still has them wrapped around her little finger.
She's still their golden child, and they are even after realizing what she is (likely a legitimate psychopath) bending over backwards to appease her, something that will 100% guaranteed happen at OP's expense. A psychopath like her doesn't suddenly just snap out of it because they go to therapy or get some prescription pills; she will just learn to hide her true self better and get even more manipulative.

Tell that to my damn dad. He's now dealing with a 9 year old who has been spoiled all his life and has the most entitled attitude. Rolls his eyes at everyone (except our stepmom), talks back, and gets literally anything he wants even if my dad barely has money. I and so do my 3 older brothers talk about this all the time. We grew up in dirt, getting treated like we were teens. Whooped everyday, made to clean bathrooms, dishes, and the house all before we turned 6 years old, and still were told, "These are different times," after confronting my dad about how he responds to my little brothers entitlement. My mom even said to us probably hundreds of times that she knows my little brothers upbringing is extremely unfair to us and that she hates how my dad spoils my little brother.
I understand he's premature, but that doesn't give him ANY reason to be spoiled to the max, especially he grew up like a normal, on-time baby with no health issues.
Another thing, we grew up with a hot headed dad that blew up at us when we did the smallest thing because of his ptsd. My little brother has received, at most, 15 spankings (no whooping with belts, shoes, or cords) by our mom his whole life. I remember getting whooped 2-4 times a week for a year. Main ones were when I didn't wash dishes right. They'd get thrown back in the sink and I'd have to rewash every last dish in the house, and still get a whooping after I finish. My little brother still can't tie his shoes because he gets mad everytime someone tries to teach him and he ends up throwing a fit if he "can't make bunny ears."
      I'm 16 and I cannot WAIT until I get 18. I want to leave.

@@rogueshark23 - I actually do wonder if they recognize that their 'golden child' turned out that bad precisely because of the years of blatant favouritism. They treated one of them as the perfect princess and made excuses for their behaviour or outright dismissed the possibility that she could have done something bad in the first place. The other one seemed more like a +1 that they liked well enough, but thought of as a troublemaker because she had the gall to accuse their miracle baby of anything.
Wouldn't be surprised if they remain largely oblivious to their role in how rotten their 2nd child turned out. A narcissist with tendencies that might get her diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder.
If I were in the OP's shoes I certainly wouldn't have been keen on reconciliation. They may not have been deliberately abusive, but years of being dismissed and treated as the unnecessary 'extra' daughter would certainly have done a lot of harm in its own right. As much as I'd like them to do this, there's a pragmatic angle to this. Lisa views Op as the problem, and likely sees her as turning them from her. She's a target. If they fix the crazy, then there's a possibility that things might get better. Of course, this could also mean she fakes her way back in, or worse, the favoritism comes back and they bend to her will so as to not have repeats. This could go either way, but at the very least the decision seems sound why Op is doing what she does.

OP is being naive. She thinks that her parents want to reconcile with her out of remorse and guilt. Well, I think they do feel truly sorry, but mostly for themselves. The only reason why they want to use OP to play happy family is to ease their own consciousness. They did not give a single fuck about OP for all those years. Even when they started their family vacation, they were perfectly happy and fine with OPs ticket being "accidentally" cancelled, and maybe all of them were actually glad about that. Now their beloved little daughter turns out to be an absolute pos, and so they seek immediate remidy by using OP as a replacement. I do not think for a single second that someone would suddenly start caring about a child when for so many years they were perfectly fine with completely ignoring it in favor of another child. No, I am certain that they only pretend to care about her for selfish reasons. Absolutely disgusting trash, they do not deserve a second chance.
They must live with the consequences of their actions and be forced to face them head on without any aid whatsoever. Honestly, even just the fact that OP helped them to get out of their vacation was probably too much. I would have told them "all those years you did not treat me like I was a part of your family. Only now, that you need something from me, you suddenly want to act like family. You chose her over me, so it is entirely up to you to figure out how to deal with her. I don't think we should talk again. Goodbye." and hung up. That's the only way they'll ever truly regret what they did. Whatever she does, OP should not have settled for being a "backup plan" or "convenient second choice" for her parents. I really hate the "They're young. They'll outgrow this" mentality when kids act out or treat their siblings horribly like this. Op's parents really suck. Still, if op's sister hadn't done what she done she totally would have framed op for the missing heart medication. Op's parents being the bad parents they are would have believed it too. This vacation would have been the final straw for me and I'd tell mom to freaking do her job for once and stand up to the brat she and her husband created. Op's sister needs more than just eviction. She needs one of those psychiatric hospitals.

People only outgrow things when they are parented through it and given structure, consequences, and told "no, that's not okay." Honestly it can be as simple as demonstrating through your behavior and attitude toward the sibling wronged how the kid doing the wrongs should actually be behaving. Kids do imitate you on some level, it's not a guaranteed that they'll imitate you exactly, but it makes a bigger difference than parents seem to be aware of. If you, as one of the children, are attacking your sibling to feel superiority or to isolate your parents' favor for yourself, then as the parent, I can imagine refusing to play favorites and choosing to intentionally show respect and concern for the wronged sibling would push back against the idea that striving for dominance would gain them something. Kind I'm too used to people deciding that "good parenting" looks like beating the sht out of your kids and yelling at them and isolating them at home and requiring them to pay to live in their own house and stuff like that, I feel like parents need to take responsibility for their own actions and attitudes first. Also, if you're setting up a hierarchy among your children, NONE of the children feel loved. Did you see how insecure Lisa felt in her parents' love? The second they included OP at all, Lisa, in her subjective experience, felt like that meant she was nothing. "Golden child" dynamics tell the kid that they are only valued because another child is _de_valued. You have no worth, you just have competition. Kids need actual real affection and attention and respect, not parentally self-aggrandizing doting just to feel important and to get a child to show themselves heaps of affection.

It’s because they’re family they get away with it. If it were a friend, or even distant relative, that type of behavior wouldn’t be tolerated and they’d be cut out. Because it’s their child, it’s a whole other story. I also think it’s more likely the youngest child gets favorited and in this story and my own experience, that holds true. Even sibling theories by psychologists like Adler claim the oldest is held to higher responsibilities while the youngest gets more lenient treatment.

You are being incredibly ignorant and inconsiderate. Please gain some empathy for those who have miscarried/had a stillbirth. It is an incredibly traumatic experience. Having a baby after a miscarriage can certainly be a miracle. They can be a beacon of hope. They have the chance at life that the previous child never got to have. They can't make the trauma caused by miscarriage/stillbirth go away, but they can help the family and especially parents heal. The miracle baby isn't given a trophy for showing up, they usually get coddled and adored over because the parents are afraid of losing them too, or because it helps them feel like they're making up for the child they never got the chance to coddle.
This isn't making "every little thing special". This is people celebrating the simple joy of being able to carry a child to term and to raise a new life. This is celebrating the greatest and deepest love we know as a species and as animals capable of sexual reproduction; the love of a parent as they get to meet their newborn child for the first time, as well as mourning the loss of a child who they never got to meet.

This shows that she is still their golden child, that they will still bend over backwards for her and sacrifice OP to do it. Sometimes when you are faced with evil (regardless of any mental illnesses) you just have to cut all ties even if it's a daughter, son, sibling or parent.
If they are so damn eager to forgive the sister for what she did to them - including hiding the father's medications that literally kept him alive - that's on them, but they are incredibly disrespectful and toxic for almost instantly working on forgiving Lisa for what she did to OP for two decades.

Gc and op apparently started staying with op sister and are all getting along and trying to get away from most of their family.

This sounds like classic Borderline Personality Disorder. While the rage and manipulation could be easily chalked up to psychopath or narcissism, what really drives it away from those is how clingy she is to the parents. In BPD there's a term "favorite person", and I'm pretty sure that's what Lisa's relationship is with the parents.

The parents are more to blame than Lisa. Children aren't born spoiled, the parents spoil them.
This woman was never told "no" her entire life, so of course she's incapable of understanding that the world doesn't revolve around her.
Personally, I think Lisa is beyond redemption at this point. And OP is a better person than me; I don't know if I would've been able to forgive the parents that easily.

Lisa another example of a favored child turning psycho because the parents refused to see what was truly going on. funny enough OP dodged a nuke by not going on the trip as there's 0 doubt in my mind that she would have set up OP as the med thief then she made the most fatal mistake when you're like that letting the mask slip once it came off the parents realized the truth. let's just hope the bridge between OP and her parents can be mended.
side note I hope the Parents changed locks and put up video cameras or moved from that house before going on their trip because that Lisa will try something given an opportunity like this.

  • @whitehawk7082

I find this story hard to believe. As in, OOP’s sister has serious mental health issues, most likely NPD, BPD or something similar, yet their parents never realized the extent of Lisa’s impairment? And when they did, they never addressed it because they didn’t know what to do? And they’re supposedly “well-respected doctors”? I call BS because primary care physicians can diagnose these conditions and know the steps to take to have a patient involuntarily committed.
OOP even claimed that a person can’t be forced to be mentally evaluated, but that’s incorrect, especially if the person in question has been arrested for committing a crime or is behaving in a manner than may be harmful to themselves or others. The police in most jurisdictions of developed countries have the authority to forcibly detain a person who’s demonstrating criminal behavior and behaving erratically, and transport them to a mental health unit for evaluation.

Lisa's behavior honestly reminds me that of a psychotic (no duh i know) bratty (again duh) yandere she wants all of the love and attention from their parents but the moment they did something she didn't like she wasn't a bit hesitant to harm or at the very least threaten them just because they wanted to have OP join the trip at first I'm honestly afraid that in lisa's sick mind her taking her father's heart medicines and putting his health in serious risk was her version of a "punishment" for even giving OP a chance to get a glimpse of attention after years of being a self made "miracle child" after years of manipulation into her parents good graces

You do not owe your parents for having a child and doing the legal bare minimum to raise and care for the child. That is the law. They had to house, feed, clothe, care for, and teach you. That is not kindness or something that should be paid back. I can't stand when people have parents that treat that like it's some huge accomplishment that deserves an award of some kind.

I can't believe OP's parents are doctors. First of all, they should know better than anyone the psychological damage favoritism can have on a child's mental well being. Second, she hid her father's medication, she trashed their home, bitch came at them with a knife and they still were hemming and hawing about 'willful mischief,' or saying it has to be voluntary to get an evaluation cause she's 18..she threatened their lives numerous times and been arrested twice ffs, they have cause. Get her committed or get a restraining order. Wtf is wrong with these people? I pity anybody that has them as their doctor, I can't imagine anything would get done with them.
also, it has been clearly shown that the girl is unhinged yet she's staying at her friend's house. I hope OP or the parents let the parents of the friend know what has been happening or that would be really messed up
