    While we may have been unlucky between 1998-2004, ultimately, it was Cesare Maldini and Trapattoni who were at fault. They wasted a fantastic generation of players, by adopting such negative tactics, not calling up in-form players (Pirlo and Baggio 2002), playing players out of position (Pessotto in central midfield against France 1998), and leaving the likes of Baggio on the bench for an off-form and under performing Del Piero. What's almost as bad was that those coaches gave the perennial - and ignorant - critics of Italian football plenty of ammunition which still lasts to this day.

      The favoured players were playing for Juventus at the time... In Italy they are kings, they get anything they want and nobody can get in their way. And they get smacked down as soon as they step outside into Europe territory. A spoiled kid that does no good for the family.

    As a Bulgarian and a fan of Italy, it was very exciting to watch this game back then. Italy had a poorly coached squad of world class players while we tried to take a chance and we almost drew. I never expected anything else than an Italy win but I knew it wasn't gonna be 5-0 as Sweden beat us in our first game, so I was hoping that the other game won't end in a draw so that Italy could proceed.

      @@BlackCrowNavajo Andrew Jennings (the man who exposed Blatter's FIFA) was basically saying in his second book tht referees were instructed to get South Korea as far into the Finals as possible because attendance at certain venues were (Jeju especially) really poor.
      You saw those crowds at Korea home games, money had to make, and the attendance for Korea's games helped to mitigate the difficulties fans from the other side of the world had to make the long trip.
      I suspect by the time Korea had to face Germany in the semi, FIFA were like ite we good here, no sense having the Koreans in the Final. Must have the big dogs play it out. Jennings' books on FIFA are compelling reads. Leaves a sour taste in the mouth about the sport though, but say what. LOL
      Edit: I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, and the last official we had at the World Cup was Michael Ragoonath, a fellow Trinidadian, an assistant referee who according to Jennings was hand picked on the advice of Jack Warner (then FIFA vice president and unfortunately from T&T as well) to be on the officiating team for the Spain-Korea quarter-final. Ragoonath was the mad man who disallowed a clear Morientes golden goal in sudden-death extra time claiming the ball went out of play for a corner.

    What a team. 4 playmaker's in the starting 11. Fiore, Pirlo, Del Piero + Cassano. I remember watching it but I don't remember the Pirlo step over for Cassano's goal. Seen that somewhere before. Ahoy England in 2014. ; ) The Denmark game was the typical slow Italian start. Then they absolutely blitzed Sweden for an hour. But as soon as Trap made the subs they went from world beaters to also rans. They'd have probably won it if they'd gotten through the group + Trap didn't self-sabotage with crazy subs. The refs + organisations really did seem to have it in for Italy around this time though. They never seemed to get a decision but soft calls would always go against them! Totti was banned by VAR 15 years before it was even invented. Sweden + Denmark went through courtesy of a convenient 2-2 draw + everyone knows about S.Korea. Why didn't they use video evidence then? Even the changes + sudden globalisation at club level seemed to penalise Italian clubs the most! No wonder they made sure this time round + started off with two 3-0 wins.

      @pistolsscaramanga3437 Před 2 lety +2

      To be fair, the Denmark-Sweden game (played simultaneously to the Italy-Bulgaria game) was a straight battle. I remember watching this match, and the history between these two nations always makes it a special encounter, definitely when the stakes are this high as well.
      Denmark came out hard and really made it a battle. Sweden came back twice to level the score in the rain, and equalized in the last few minutes.
      The only part of the game where there was some sign of ‘easing up’ was in the last minute of injury time when Sweden were starting from the back but just passed the ball horizontally in the back line. Denmark didn’t attack them, and the Swedes (who were in possession) didn’t really advance upfield at this point. Both teams were through, but that was in the last seconds of the game. And it was more or less a case of both teams not wanting the risk to concede (rather than some conspiracy that some Italians claimed…)

    • @gregthackray
      @gregthackray Před 2 lety +5

      @@pistolsscaramanga3437 Yeah. I know. I'm not blaming Sweden or Denmark. Any other nation would do the same in that position. Italy should've carried on. They had the beating of Sweden but instead they decided to hold out for the 1-0. It was the wrong mentality by Trap + that's what cost them. It was a strangely set-up tournament though. It doesn't matter too much if the games are simultaneous if a 2-2 is a guarantee to go through. Would they have come out with such gusto + fighting if it was only a 0-0 that they both needed for instance? But Italy didn't help themselves with Totti + Trap + have to take responsibility. I think that's why they chose Lippi next as he was a much more attack minded coach + I think he got the odd decent result, if I remember right. 🤔

    Karena hanya lawa Italia bulgaria seperti itu bermain. Yg sebelum nya jadi lumbung gol Denmark dan swedia. Mengapa demikian, karena bulgaria ing.membawa pulang Italia biar tidak malu. Akhir nya tercapai. Karena walaupun Denmark dan swedia seri, tapi jika italia unggul 3 0 atau lebih, Italia yg berhak lolos dengan denmark. Padahal ketika masih kedudukan seri 1 1,ditempat lain, Denmark unggul 2 1 atas swedia. Karena tomason ingin Italy yg lolos bersama Denmark. Itulah bentuk kesetiaan Jondal Tomasan dengan Italia yg Milan adalah clup nya. Mati matian tomason bermain buat Denmark. Karena semua orang Denmark dan swedia itu ingin kedua negara skandinavia itu lolos. Tapi tidak dengan tomason.
