    The Hornby 8F is a stunning runner. I was surprised how quiet it ran. Just the noise of the click clack over the rail joins. As quiet as any modern loco. I think the Dublo and Wrenn items outlived their owners as they are built so well. Maybe thats why they went out of business? No repeat sales! I will have to keep my eyes out for a nice Wrenn loco for the collection. My vote is for the Wrenn set. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for watching Steve, You may be on to something, a too well built item is no good if you expect someone to buy a new version regularly. I think the makers these days get repeat business by advertising 'new tooling' etc. My mobile still works ok but its five years old. My kids laugh at it because it's not this years model. Different thinking today compared to a few decades ago. Best regards to you

    I have my first train set, a Hornby Frieghtmaster from 1973. I have used the same stock but with a new sound fitted class 31 too. I do enjoy seeing these old sets.

    What a lovely quiet locomotive and I think it could out class any modern locomotive for pulling power alone . I vote for the hornby dublo 3 rail, Al the best to you.

    So many wonderful items to look at today. When you said the 8F was quiet I did not expect it to be that quiet, that is one fine piece of engineering. That set is a gem worth preserving. I have three of the pieces of rolling stock in well played with condition. Having had a Hornby Dublo set this time I will ask for the Wrenn set next time. Regards, David.

      Hello David, It is very enjoyable to get an older engine running like this one. The trouble is it sets a standard that will mean I'll be fettling everything again to try and get them all to run as quietly. Take care, all the best to you

    I would vote for the Wrenn set. Wrenn sets seem quite rare and I found that red wagon interesting. It’s red colour and the DE prefix to the wagon number suggests this is from the moulding of the Dublo packing van. The Dublo packing van was considered a rare item at one time although for some unexplained reason not considered particularly rare these days. (Maybe someone got hold of a supply of Wrenn bodies and married them to generic Dublo chassis’s ) I like how Wrenn boldly produce their locomotives with only the faintest nod to the prototype. Even the green doesn’t seem quite the right shade for Great Western green but guess that particular loco is quite a collectible piece.

      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Andrew, that's interesting information about the red wagon. I'll enjoy looking at it in more detail when I get the items out. Hopefully I'll be able to see any markings. Best regards to you

    Nice to see the 8F on the Super 4 layout.
    Such a quiet and smooth runner.
    I heard recently that the new Hornby motors only have a 100 hour running life.
    As you pointed out, the vintage motors were designed to be serviced and are still running today.
    It's such a shame that we live in a disposable world today.
    The Wrenn would be my first choice for the next set, although they are both of interest.
    Stay safe.
    Mon from Brisbane

      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Mon, That's interesting information about the newer motors. If you enjoy your railway and run it a few times a week I bet it doesn't take too long to get to 100 hours. I think I'll stick to this older stuff. It definitely is fun to use. Take care, best regards to you

    I’m not at all surprised it worked straight out of the box. I bought an 8F of the same vintage on eBay about 10 years ago. It arrived in France from a loft in Glasgow where it had apparently been living since the sellers dad put it away in the mid sixties. I put it on my layout, turned up the H&M Duette gently and away it went. Amazing build quality as you say…
    Next video ? I don’t mind I’ll be happy with either.
    Rob
    PS I’m still looking forward to you putting that extra point in to complete your hump yard 😉. I guess the track geometry is the problem meaning you’ll have to do some « custom » track building.

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Robin, a perfect combination, a heavy 8F and the Duette. Good to hear you got a nice loco. I keep looking at that hump Shunting Yard, I need more spare time. Hopefully I'll make progress in the winter. I do need to make a couple of bits of special track but it should be straight forward. Take care, all the best to you

    Great video. My Hornby Dublo Castles are just as quiet. Great British engineering! Could we see the Wrenn set next, please? Even though the livery on the loco is spurious , it does look good!

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching David, These lovely old locos just perform so well. As you say they are genuinely engineered well. I find a few Wrenn locos have ambitious liveries but even though they may not be at all prototypical they look good and are fun to run. Best regards to you

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Martin, I envy you having some three rail down. There is nothing quite like running some Dublo. Is your loco a Ring Field or the earlier motor? Reason I ask is I find the older motor to be unappreciated. I find them excellent runners and like them just as much as the later versions. All the best to you

    • @TheShadman47
      @TheShadman47 Před rokem

      It seems that both 2- and 3-rail versions of the 8F have the 'slanted forward' motor popular with HD locos at the time. Best wishes.

    I think the box art was better back then. I had and old Lima set as a young lad with a automatic working level crossing, the barriers went down via a mechanism under the weight of the locomotives very exciting.

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Steve, That level crossing sounds excellent, back in the day they took time to make lots of the items fun. I agree about the box art, imagine seeing a display of different manufactures items back in the sixties and seventies, it would have been spectacular. Take care, best regards to you

      Hello David and thanks for watching. This layout is more of a vintage type seen in the early catalogues, some buildings and accessories but not the super detail of ballast or landscaping. I built it based on the layouts I saw as a boy at shows or on display in a toyshop. Take care, best regards to you

    I Entirely Agree With Your Sentiments On Maintaining These Vintage Models Compared To Modern Made In China Offerings. To Be Honest I Have Been Put Off Of Buying Into That Sort Of Stock Specifically For That Reason. I Would Like To See The Dublo Three Rail Next Please. I Noticed Some Points Insulator Tabs In The Box. Could You Set Up Some Points To Demonstrate How They Work 😁 ( Have You Got A Different Camera The Picture Quality Is Superb )

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety

      Hello Tim, That's a good spot about those insulating tabs, I will definitely feature them. You have good observational skills, I did use a different item to film this. I had some time on my hands the other day and fitted a new (secondhand) camera to a broken iPhone my step daughter left behind a while ago. It does seem to produce better images. Take care, all the best to you

    Would the track geometry allow you to run both sets alongside each other - both 2-6-4s running side by side? Great to see these sets running, as always. Thanks ETA: the brass nut in the packet is possibly a spare for the power connecter?
