The Russian economy IS doing great - on paper. Their GDP is boosted due to military spending. This doesn't generate the same value to the country as sales abroad which bring in foreign currency. It's also why the IMF values the ruble above where it was last September. I agree with your guest, that we really do need some strong "statesman leaders" during the current situation. The "west" must be united in our commitment to Ukraine's victory, and Russia's defeat. Our leaders have not clearly defined our goals. "As long as it takes," is a weak promise. It indicates a willingness to continue a slow, slogging conflict, rather than taking decisive action to achieve our goals. The longer it takes, the more it costs - in money and lives. I don't understand the reticence about defeating Russia. The world would be a safer place with a crushed and restructured Russia. A Russia no longer capable of being a threat to anyone.
Current sanction enforcements are comical. If we are unwilling to endure a relatively small economic pinch, we cannot exact a crippling pinch on the Russian economy. Putin's Russia will not cease its bad behavior on the world stage unless the consequences are unbearable. Anything less will fail.
Your guest said that the Russian economy is strong, and getting stronger. I do find that a bit hard to believe, but I am not an economist. If the ruble is falling in value, and the work force is short by millions of people, inflation will increase. But obviously, until we get really serious about stopping all trade with Russia, Putin will find ways to finance his war machine. We in the west should be ashamed by our hypocrisy concerning sanctions. We stand on our soap box and preach about sanctions, all the while finding nefarious ways to bypass them. America was a net exporter of oil, and now we are back to importing. Let the drilling continue. If our strategic oil reserves are depleted, and we have to import oil, we put ourselves in a precarious position, especially if we have to fight a war.

A lot of people think sanctions are like a blockade. Sanctions are when the government ban certain transactions with an individual, group or nation. Obviously private property rights are respected as much as possible so sometimes they wait for contracts to expire or waive sanctions to protect innocent investors and workers. Thus decoupling major economies can take time. This delays things but recall that economies aren't black and white. It isn't about whether or not russia can buy and sell but whether or not they can do so at a high enough price, in enough tim and in sufficient quantities. Whether or not they are getting money enough money in time.
Things could be going faster and we should increase the pressure but nonetheless the russian economy isn't viable.

Btw Russia has burned through 50% of their Total Soviet stockpiles of armored vehicles, which are Massive, the largest in the world, so they can probably maintain this pace for another 2 years!
