    Adding another comment sorry. So I found out that the volvo power steering pump pushes out 1700psi at max which the content creator said the pump runs at a constant 75% load without a Pulse Width Modulator. So a typical belt driven pump at idle runs at about 125psi. At around 5000rpm most pumps will produce 700psi. So that means you can run the pump at a little less than half speed and you will produce around 700 to 850psi which will quiet down the motor and give more longevity due to it not producing as much heat. Hope this is helpful information.

    The only issue I've found is under high demand quick steering the steering gets real heavy because the can bus isn't turning up the demand , need to find a way of getting more out of it

    What I've found out is the main reason the EPS pump from volvo is so loud is because a lot of people doing the conversion only hook up the power, ground, and the 12V signal wire. But no one installs a PWM to control the speed of the pump which in the stock volvo car the ECU or PCM has a built in pwm for the pump. Without a PWM the pump is at 100% speed all the time which may or may not hurt the pump depending on how often you do a fluid flush but with a PWM you can experiment with the speed at 50% when normal driving then go to 80% for racing. I don't believe the pump needs to be at 100% at all times.

    • @filipprucnal
      @filipprucnal Před 2 lety +3

      Noone bothers with it because it's not PWM, it's CAN. Basically the pump has a built in controller that listens for signals from the CAN network to vary its output
      It would be nice if someone finally cracked it because it would allow you to seamlessly vary the pump output based on a couple of variables, mainly speed (I hate overassisted steering for highway driving)

  • @7eis
    @7eis Před 2 lety +1

    Seems to me the pump is faster/cheaper/easier to change than the steering rack. So I'd let the 'most valuable' thing in the loop dictate the fluid. Probably does no difference in real life, atg would probably be fine too.

    Thank you for this video. I'm currently planning on installing an s40 pump in my 13. Got lucky and sourced one at the yard. Found a few write ups, but I do like your take on th separate toggle for the signal wire. I had seen one somewhere else where they tied two wires together. I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to an fittings, but how do you go about attaching the an fitting to the line. ?

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 3 lety

      No problem! I'm glad it helped. It's a pretty simple setup really. It's been reliable for me and I'm going on a year and a half on mine. Basically I just used the original hard-line, cut it right before it turns down, and then put on a -6an male to 5/16 hard-line adapter. But apparently there is a fitting you can buy now that is the same thread as the original hard-line and it just converts to a straight an line. I definitely recommend using either a ptfe line or hydraulic line from your local oreillys. I had a 6 jic line made at oreillys and it works great. 6 jic is the same as 6an.

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 3 lety +2

      If you wire it the same way that I do, it just runs at a constant 75% duty cycle all the time. So its heavier at slow speeds. Supposedly if you take the column sensors and wire up a speed sensor to the other two wires you can make it regulate like normal, but I haven't had any issues the way it is.

      It can't. Maybe if you put it in the well there where the relay box is, but it's too big to go on the shock tower. It's like 15 inches tall. And something like a 6x6 square at the base.

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 3 lety

      I'm not sure without physically looking at it. My brother in law says he feels like my car is a little heavy too, but thats compared to his s13 with a 1uz and Toyota pump. It could possibly be a weak pump or its just not enough for you system, but I can't imagine an ls400 system being that much different. As cheap as the pumps are, id try another pump out of a junkyard just to see if its consistent.

      @@corysnider 180 dollars isnt exactly cheap but I get that. My buddy has an s13 with the volvo pump and twin superchargers, he doesnt have this issue. Its not just a little hard, its almost as if the switch is off. It actually is the same if the switch is off.

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 3 lety

      Damn.. I get mine for $40 a piece! That's crazy. I would make sure all the power and grounds are solid. Have you checked to see if its coming on? Without your engine running for example? And where is it located? Does it have a super long line? Or is it in the engine bay? If it feels the same as when it's off, I'd say that pump is just bad or there is some kind of block in the system. Mine is definitely noticeable on and off.

    • @xJMSports
      @xJMSports Před 3 lety +1

      @@corysnider its in the engine bay right next to the original ps pump location. The feed line to the rack is the oem line (new) and the return line now runs through a Mishimoto oil color instead of just a single tube for cooling. The pump is audible and i can turn it on without the car running so yes I verify its on and can see fluid flowing in it when its on. Voltage is at 13.65v at idle with both electric fans running as well as the ps pump.

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, I'm not sure on that then. I've used it and a couple buddies have all with the same success. If you can find another pump for cheap, I'd try that just to narrow it down. It sounds like it all should be good to go. I wonder if the problem lies inside your rack at this point? Mayne that was part of your source problem with losing ps before hand? I'm really not sure.

    • @corysnider
      @corysnider  Před 2 lety

      Well, yes.. but im pretty sure it was just the rack leaking from age. It didn't leak out of the seals, just the pinion area. I've had it rebuilt and it has been fine ever since.
