- In todays video it's finally time for me to rank the albums of my all time favourite band - Nine Inch Nails! I've been planning to do this for ages but wanted to do this incredible music justice so I put it off but here it finally is!

The combo of ruiner/becoming/idonotwantthis/bigman/warmplace/eraser is just absolutely mind blowing. Some of NINs best songs going in order one after another.
No love for the Quake soundtrack? They did a vinyl reissue last year! That makes it canon!
I actually do love the Quake soundtrack but I prefer The Social Network/Soul so I didn’t want to include one because I’d have to include them all 😂
Quake (the game) was actually the catalyst for me. I had just gotten it for my 12th birthday (my parents were cool like that)
At that point I had already heard Closer and Head Like a Hole enough times on the radio to have to stop what I was doing at the time and just experience the songs (there was a time when it could be days before you could hear your favorite songs)
But when Quake came out, it was an immersive experience like no other. The graphics, sounds, and of course, the music, were all revolutionary. When I found out that Nine Inch Nails, who were responsible for some of my favorite songs on the radio, were responsible for the sounds AND the music for Quake, the floodgates were opened.
First album I ever bought was Pretty Hate Machine. Next, I borrowed The Downward Spiral from my friend. I never gave it back (sorry Jeff).
The 2 year wait for The Fragile was unbearable, but worth it, as that is my favorite. The 6 year wait for With Teeth was the worst (tempered by And All that Could Have Been live). I think that’s why With Teeth is probably my least fave. A long wait after the best album ever was going to inevitably lead to a little bit of disappointment. It’s not a bad album by any stretch, and I also recognize it brought in a lot of new fans, but it was never my cup of tea.
I really enjoyed Year Zero, though. I thought the heat sensitive CD was one of the coolest things ever. I’ve rambled on far too long. NIN is GOAT!

I like what you said about NIN can be hard to get into sometimes. I really felt for that beautiful ending of 'the perfect drugs', but it's only beautiful if you listened though the whole song. That soundtrack (lost highway) introduced me to so many cool bands
The ghost albums are some of my favorites. They are beautiful pieces of dark ambient, as well as great post rock passages
I love the Ghosts albums. I don't think a lot of people care for those as much as the others. But I love instrumentals a lot so I would put that album high on my list.
PHM deserves a higher spot, but then i am older. That album along with Broken shaped by life. Good Video!

@marylovesmusic I 10000% agree with you about Trent. The Fragile saved my life. Without a doubt my favorite album of all time. I could go on and on, but after watching this subscribing was a must because it’s so nice to find others that share my love for this band, or more like this one man, and now Atticus of course. We don’t match up exactly about the ranking, but very close. Great video!

There's one release that you forgot that I feel is very important. The Still EP. Something the truest hardcore fans know. It's a compilation of pieces from a rejected film score and more acoustic versions of some songs along with one new song, and all that could have been. The acoustic versions are so damn good and I wish they would have done more.

NIN has been my favorite band since 1995, I’m 42 now and I’ve found my list from best to not the best changes every few years haha. But the top two haven’t, The Fragile and Downward Spiral flip every now and then. This is the first video of yours I’ve watched, you did a great job explaining your list and it was a fun listen! I think I got them all! So hard to rank, but TDS is definitely my favorite. It was my introduction to NIN in 1994 as a 15 year old and it also came at the perfect time for me. I was dealing with depression and felt understood. NINs music has always been there for me as cheesy as it sounds. But I know you get it! 😀
I delved into Trent's work right after my mom passed away. A week after I found out my mom died youtube recommended The Downward Spiral to me. TDS came to me at the perfect time and i was in the exact headspace for it to resonate with my soul, hooked ever since. All I listened to for 4 months straight to help me grieve. True pieces of art

Year Zero and Hesitation Marks are SEVERELY underated.
Although I personally can't stand while I'm still here, hesitation marks gets a pretty close 9 out of 10 to me
Fellow NIN nerd here, same thing happened with me where I listened to Closer YEARS ago but really never got into more of their stuff until Add Violence came out in 2017. They have since become one of my all time favorite bands. 100% agree with The Fragile as their best album, it is perfection imo. The Great Below and The Frail/The Wretched are just on another level.

Can’t believe PHM is so low! That’s most fan’s #1-3. It’s my #2. And hold the phone, Closer was in Magic Mike? I never even noticed. Most of that movie had me thinking, “I need to start working out.”
Here’s my ranking this morning. Everything except the top 3 change positions all the time.

7: Add Violence (THIS ISNT THE PLACE and THE BACKGROUND WORLD. As a fan of vintage analog gear I love the “physical component” for this album.
8: Hesitation Marks (Various Methods of Escape and I Would For You are 10/10) I had different expectations on this one expecting more to be like TDS. Further listens showed me it’s is a continuation of Trent personally in TDS vs the present. Knowing that I liked this album more.
9: The Slip (Head Down, Lights in the Sky, yes!)
10: Not The Actual Events (She’s Gone on Twin Peaks? Love it!)
11: Bad Witch - This one takes some work to appreciate, which Trent does intentionally. It’s growing on me.
I look at the Ghosts albums separately. I was super excited for this album when I heard it would be all instrumentals. I thought wow, we’ll get more songs like Help Me I’m in Hell, A Warm Place, The Frail, Just Like You Imagined, The Mark Has Been Made. We got something completely different.
Favorite Ghost album is Ghosts V. Favorite song of all Ghosts albums are Ghosts 31 - IV and Together (thanks ixi music! You put me onto this song, so beautiful!)
I didn’t include and remix or live albums, but I will say Still holds a very special place in my heart. I loved Fixed and Further Down the Spiral when they came out, yes I’m that old. I bought The Downward Spiral on release day at the wise age of 11. Never got much into the Year Zero or Fragile remixes. I loved the remix.nin.com site though. I checked it daily.
Another NIN concept album would make me immediately just evaporate on the spot I think

Great video. NIN is in my top 3 bands of all time, tied for first of course. One of my favorite things you said was that if someone loves the downward spiral, they are a true music fan. So well said. Great video and ranking, I saw and enjoyed your Manson video as well. I got to see NIN live in 1999 for their fragile tour, a perfect circle opened up for them and it was amazing. My ranking is

Best 2 songs not on an original studio release for me are Burn and the perfect drug (2 of my favorite songs from them period) have you heard the perfect drug? Look for it if you haven’t but I’m sure you have. I look forward to seeing your future videos, keep up the great work🙌🔥

As someone who was a freshman in high school when P.H.M. dropped, I can say that the first three major releases (followed by Broken and Downward Spiral) flow flawlessly into each other. If you like you can also add the Fragile as being a conclusion of an overall character arc for Trent as a person dealing with a lot of issues. I'm kinda sad that Fixed or either of the Further Down the Spiral got no mention here. "Happiness In Slavery" is my all-time favorite NIN song and the remix "Screaming Slave" from Fixed is a very close second.

I stumbled across this video earlier today and greatly enjoyed seeing you geek out about my favorite band/artist growing up. My ranking would be a bit different but I generally agree that the entire NIN catalog is worthy of praise and it's great to hear the passion you have for it :)
yeah, like others are saying here, NIN has been so freaking consistent it's hard to really rank them. For me, It starts with PHM and goes up to the Fragile as far as my faves. But everything past those has been fucking brilliant too. Another thing with NIN is they are such a beast of a fucking live band. Everything about NIN from the actual music, the way he markets each album, the look of the stage on each tour, down to the merch for each era, its all sheer genius. When people ask me my fave NIN songs, I can't really answer. I am like you have to catch me on a particular day and ask me then which ones I am grooving on at that moment. It also depends on my frame of mind at any given moment. Happy, sad, irritated, and so forth.
The Fragile is my favorite album of all time its pure emotion in music form

NIN is my favorite band of all time and i met Trent a couple of times and he's a very cool guy, that being said, after the SLIP i dont really like what they made :(..... and they are also the greatest LIVE band ever!!

Oof, gotta hit me where it hurts and put Ghosts I-IV on the bottom. Personally, it's probably my favorite NIN album.
Together and Locusts were great, but I think they were held back by their structure, weirdly enough. There's something about the surprise of listening to Ghosts I-IV for the first time and not knowing what the next track could be. You run through a spectrum of guitars and electronic ambiance with varying tones, with no consistency between tracks. The lack of vocals makes you focus on the structure and pitch, making the transition from track to track more impactful. Going from the screeching chaos of 27 Ghosts III to the calming guitar and soft drums of 28 Ghosts IV is a whiplash and welcomed experience I've yet to find anywhere else.
There's also the actual instrumentation, and how the lack of context invites your imagination to think of stories, imagery, lyrics, even a name that fit the tone and progression of the song. IIRC Trent Reznor(ᵃⁿᵈ ᴬᵗᵗᶦᶜᵘˢ ᴿᵒˢˢ) mentioned that it was supposed to be something akin to the soundtrack of a daydream, which I think he nailed perfectly.
all 3 ghosts albums (6 if you wanna get technical) are some of my favorites. I-IV easily is in my top three of their career. also finally! someone who gives various methods of escape the proper attention it deserves!
Honestly various methods of escape is so underrated, it’s one of their coolest songs ever!!
"...the best song-writer since Paul and John." Couldn't agree more, Mary, although Massive Attack circa Mezzanine also comes close to the sonic genius of The Beatles and NIN, for me.

Don't agree with the beggining of the list but of course it is your personal taste so it's all fine. I agree on The Fragile and to me, Hesitation Marks is one of my top 5 NIN albums; it sounds so amazingly solid, clean but layered and deep... it's hard for me to not enjoy it. I must say though that at least for me every NIN project equals QUALITY, because Trent is such a musical genius. I also love (I mean, really love) Manson's artistic career but the difference is I can perfectly tell which Manson albums are bad, or at least not at his level of creativity. With NIN instead it feels more subjective and all albums are well done, well executed, well performed. Cannot say the same of THEoL or BV, but Manson had a real comeback with The Pale Emperor and he's getting pretty solid with every release since then. Two of my all time fav projects, MM and NIN. And I think none of them would be what they are without each other.

Hell YES! Do a video on YZ. That album is fucking amazing. His most underrated masterpiece of perfection. People who don’t like that album are insane!!!

I cannot choose a favorite album. I love all his (Halos) from "pretty hate machine" to "Year Zero"...All I can say is my last favorite album was "Year Zero". Anything after I will listen to but not buy. His music after Year Zero had evolved away from me. I miss the anger, the Anxed, the energy, the hard driving guitars, the fuck you in your face lyrics. After Year Zero he used more computer and loops then live instruments. All of his Instrumental albums never were my top 50 in music period (Like the ghost series never really could even listen to them)

But I truly love your video... I myself have seen them on every tour from 1989 to present day. I seen them in Cleveland where I use to live before lalapoloza 1 tour. They played at the Euclid Tavern in 1989. Never missed a show after that.

Based on what I have listened to death or left the longest impression on me.
I love The Background World too, but I don't understand how it justifies its length. 2/3 of the song, the ending, is a loop that sounds intentionally improperly looped and is annoying to listen to. I had to seek out a fan edit that cuts that shit out because it's a fantastic song without the extremely long and pointless (in my opinion) ending.
That clip of robin killed me 😂😂

It makes me so happy that you put Year Zero so high up. It's my third favorite NIN album, after TDS and The Fragile, ofc. But I also find it amusing that you prefer the first half to the back half. The Great Destroyer is one of my favorite NIN songs, In This Twilight + Zero-Sum make great album closers and I love Another Version of the Truth as a kind of palette cleanser between The Great Destroyer and the end. Anywho, loved hearing your thoughts about the different albums! Hopefully we get some new NIN soon. :)

Ok I had to stop watching for a sec. Pretty hate machine is way too low on the list. Top 5 at the very least. I know tastes are different, but this one just baffles me. I grew up and started with downward spiral which I'm hoping you at least have that at number 1, because that should be a given.
Anyways, you think you went hard? I had every single halo, soundtrack (like natural born killers, crow, lost highway, etc.), guest appearances like Tori Amos where he whispers and you can't even really hear him; I had the wax trax box set, I had the broken vhs, lots of bootleg CDs, posters, shirts from concerts and not concerts, magazines, stuff from his nothing label like prick(which is pretty good by the way wish they stuck around), pigface, etc. I lived and breathed Trent.
Ok, broken is lower than it should be but waaaaay more acceptable than pretty hate. And hesitation marks sounds like pretty hate and downward had a baby.
