What is your favourite tech in this video? Let us know 👇
UPDATE: 25 April 2024. Since publishing this video there have been some questions and comments regarding the Elitewheels hub. There has since been a statement from Elitewheels regarding this product > www.elite-wheels.com/company-news/investigation-into-patent-issues-regarding-the-drive-helixs-helical-dual-ratchet-system/
I had to rewatch a few times because I couldn’t believe it: the recycled fishnet bike was the only one I cared about.
It would have been the Qvist freehub, sadly I just have seen a chinese ripoff of their idea. Lewis brakes steal most design from Trickstuff, now this company is stealing from Qvist....
This is why there's 0 chinese part on my bike. I prefer people who create to people who steal
The design of the qvist freehub, copied by your wheel sponsor definitely attracted my attention... 😬
Lol, definitely the random Chinese brand (elite wheels) buying space on your video and ripping of QVIST was my favorite "tech"
Not sure how it would work in the UK or EU, but I am pretty sure that in the US that plastic bike while it is using recycled plastic would require paying to get rid of it unfortunately. I am not certain that the powers that be would buy into the recycling of something so large. Just like you have to pay to recycle a computer or a bottle, I can see having to pay to recycle that. If it takes off, I can even see having to pay to purchase it like what we call CRV.
That hub with double side ratchet definitely it’s not a patented product.
That a QVIST idea and they have a patented in pending on it.
Will be nice if you guys check that information and come back with an explanation.
patent pending does not mean patent granted. No one ever hear of qvist and no one cares
@@kubackjeeewhy do you care?
@@br_obert i dont care especially about the germans so stop crying. Germans destroyed and robbed half the world in 20th century so it is funny they are getting robbed in 21st. Guess this is what karma is
@@kubackjeeeQVIST came out with the design years before them. And theirs looks better so
I love Igus products (linear rails, bearings, etc) as they are very top quality, but didn't know they have also doing a bike!
The Igus bike reminds massively of the old Volvo Itera Cambridge yummy mummies used to ride when I was a kid before Raleigh invented the gravel bike with the Pioneer which didn't fade and go all strange.
Cool to see Igus doing something market visible. They have always done interesting and high quality stuff on the proprietary engineering supply side. Used lots of their bits at TVR for hinges, linear actuators and sliders in things like electric window mechs and throttle linkages.
The bike's driveline and wheel hub parts probably came straight out of their own catalogue!
Great stuff. 👍
Check out the Itera here > czcams.com/video/LVUHJtVqHAo/video.htmlsi=nPL7tC40L5wz776T&t=52 a step back in time! Cheers
It appears that Elite is blatantly copying Qvist. I hope GCN will provide a follow up to give due credit to those who actually came up with the idea.
Please see the attached pinned comment to read the statement from Elite
Thanks Si and crew. enjoy !
We had the best time 🙌
@@gcntech Good , have many more , eh !
Can confirm, Captain and Stoker at the Canyon booth is the best coffee at Sea Otter.
Was pretty good wasn't it ☕
No joke, I saw Simon in the line buy a burrito 😂
what filling did he get?
Like the IGUS. great commuter and camping bike. Really keen on the Cane Creek forks and the Van Rysel looks awesome. I'm sure Trek, Specialized etc will be getting a bit squeaky.....
Congratulations 4 this reports continue in the future pls 👍👍👍🇦🇹🇦🇹✌️✌️
Watch this space 👀
Isn’t that bicycle hub under (edit: Pending )patent by a German brand?
Edit: I looked it up. The brand is called Qvist and they showed it two years before.
That copy doesn’t even run as smooth.
no it is not patented by them. you gotta check your info before spreading miss info
@@kubackjeeeit’s not. But it’s pending. And the date is prior to the elite knock off. So…
@@kubackjeee Miss Info, Ms. Frizzle's colleague as I recall.
Chinese company stealing patented ideas ?!? Not cool to promote their products
Will definitively support Qvist on this
Please see the pinned comment for more information from Elite themselves
I deleted this comment. I followed a bad impulse when I wrote this on the Monday after the video came out.
What a shame. You Germans stole so much thru 20th century that it's funny you are the one being robbed in 21st. Welcome to reality.
I hope you will find solution for that.
No one ever heard about your company. You just trying to farm engagement here.
@@kubackjeeeplenty of ppl have heard of it. It was featured on Pinkbike months ago. U keep posting these bitter comments for what?
@@FOTB407 because it's fun seeing Germans cry. They destroyed and robbed half of Europe in 20th century so cool to see them taste their own shit in 21st
Gotta love that Remi Demi XL from Benno
Ultimate family wagon 🛒
Lemme get that fishing net bike, I dig it! 🎣
It's cool right! A real catch 🎣😉
8 burritos in 1 day.
That's gotta be some kind of record.
Looked early in the day too. Could have been throwing back even more in the evening. Who knows?
we will submit it to the The Guinness Book of Records and see!
That igus recycled plastic bike sounds interesting in a utilitarian sense. I do wonder how it compares in terms of recyclability compared to a steel frame, though.
We've been told it's a recyclable frame made from mainly recycled fishing lines 🎣 It's great to hear company trying an different approach
That double sided ratchet system is a patent by Qvist hubs from Dresden, Germany! Complete rip off
*Patent-pending
patent pending does not mean patent granted.
Love Sea Otter 🦦
We do too 🙌Best bike show out there?
Just like on motocross motorcycles, those inverted Cane Creek forks will need gravel guards to prevent the tubes from damage on trail
lol we take our burritos for granted. I can’t imagine trying a British burrito 🤮
How do I clean and maintain the front derailleur? My bike got LTWoo A3 groupset. Thank you #AskGCNTech
hi! thanks for the comment! We have loads of great cleaning videos on the channel, have a browse, or this video will certainly help> czcams.com/video/AncXRMRxWJM/video.htmlsi=by6ZHQuP0QzsBg2E Cheers 👍
The future of gravel is a 90s hard tail, all it needs is a company to offer narrow straight bar with stumpy bar ends. Wonder if Pace will come back with gravel fork
90s MTBs and gravel bikes do share a lot of features but that's no bad thing! How fun where those bikes? With mountain bikes getting more and more extreme. Gravel bikes have filled that middle market 🙌
With plastic bikes you must keep in mind the material decomposes quite quickly (within a couple of years) because of evaporation of the plastisizer and the impact of UV light that both make the material brittle. Perhaps professor Ollie can spend some time on this in a video.
That's an interesting point! We wonder if we can get one in his hands 🤔
Blatant copy of the revolutionary Qvist hub double ratchet.
Elitewheels= qvist hubs, hunt graphics & princeton/zipp rim profile
are those elite wheels the same as the elite wheels found on Aliexpress
Problem with rentals often isn't that they get rusty, but rather parts wear out and stop working. The locks love to get stuck.
I hoped we would finally see the new Sram Red.
Morning
morning !
Afternoon 👋
I was there for the first time today. Wow . I can’t believe I missed the Elite booth
Cool, hope you enjoyed the show?
If you mean Elite Wheels, you're better off checking out QVIST, THEY are the ones that invented the Double Ratchet System.
1:22 so where is freehub test??
We need one soon!
very good point!
1:22 come on guys, that double sided free hub is a ripoff from QVIST, they invented that years ago, support small companies that are creating fresh stuff, chinese ripoff never workout good...
I suggest that you test the patented original from Qvist - Germany! ;)
Promote qvist not elite who infringe on patents
Qvis hubs for the win! Wait what? It isn’t Qvis? I saw them two years ago. I’m sure Simon mispoke or that company is stealing intellectual property from Qvis
1:15 actually standard weight for good carbon wheels, with added complicity for more service costs.
I really want a bike with a Classified rear wheel, but I still have to pay for two more years of college for my daughter. 😢
As cool as the Classified is, it sounds like your child's education is more important... 🤞 there is no masters 😉
Community College + Part time job = Wheels for you
Was that a kid's version of the Van Rysel bike that I spotted?!
If you buy a Team Edition, they'll give you the kid's version for free! Maybe a Sea Otter special only though, so if you're in the area, today (Sunday) is the last day.
qvist is getting the shaft from elite
There is a link to a statement from Elite in our pinned comment, please see this to learn more
I have yet to see a sea otter at Sea Otter...
We've been hunting high and low too!
Enve bike looks like Cervelo
Is that a good thing? We think it looks great 👌
Love that another brand achieve the "Inverter" technolgy on it suspensions.
Wren inverted suspension forks have been around for years. They come on the Priority 600x
Wasn't that ratchet design used on fly fishing reels back in the 90's? Nothing new.
is "Fray" a good name for a bike made out of carbon fibre...?
Ha ha, good call!
Does anyone want integrated storage really?
I do. Keeps the spares out of the elements. Plus, the added weight is lower on the bike compared to a saddle bag. Have it in my mountain bike and absolutely love it.
No. Mostly things like this are causing trouble…
For some it's a great feature! No need to a saddle bag or bulky pockets 🙌
Cool?
Where the heck did all this hub specialists come from and why do they keep mentioning a company I've never seen on a bike ever?
Oh, Elite Wheels steal his Double-Sided Ratchet freehub from Qvist (germany).
Bad move!
Hi GCN Tech Team. Unfortunately it's nearly impossibly to always be aware, if a design is patented, or who invented it. But after a lot of comments and personal messages it would be fair and square to give QVIST the audience they are deserving and pointing out, that you felt for a copycat.
The Team from Dresden invented something new and put a lot of work in it. Get in contact with them, they are great.
Lol this is the worst marketing campaign I've seen xd
Hi, Thanks for commenting. We have a pinned comment with a statement from Elite in it. Please see this to find out more
"but i can't actually find anyone mogging just yet".
The brainrot has spread too far. Go on chap!
Hubs from elite copied from qvist. 😞
This just makes me sad about Kona tbh
The hub you showed is just a cheap copy of the qvist hub. Sad to see shameless copycats like that flooding the market and even sadder that GCN puts so little effort in researching the topic when they say that this is supposedly a world's first 🤦♂️
It’s not even close to how smooth the original is moving. 🤢🤮
Someone say RS-1
what the hell is the meaning of affordable ¿????? aahhaha
What has gone on with Kona???
They are gone 😂
I want to express my disappointment regarding CGN Tech promoting the Elite freehub design that bears a striking resemblance to the innovative work pioneered by the German start-up, Qvist. As cycling enthusiasts, we value authenticity, craftsmanship, and respect for intellectual property rights. Qvist’s freehub design represents a leap forward in efficiency, durability, and elegance. It embodies the spirit of true innovation, and its creators deserve recognition for their hard work.
However, seeing what appears to be a direct imitation of Qvist’s design raises concerns. As a community, we thrive when we celebrate originality and uphold the principles of creativity. By promoting products that may infringe on copyrights or mimic existing innovations, we inadvertently undermine the very essence of engineering excellence. I understand that the cycling industry is vast, with countless products flooding the market. Still, I implore GCN Tech to exercise due diligence in vetting the designs you feature. I hope that future content aligns with the values we hold dear.
What if Qvist has licensed their free hub design to other brands, such as ELITE or the patent is not valid for some reason that we don't know? ELITE is a big company, not a shady manufacturer. I don't think they would take this kind of risk.
@@adelmur1 They didn't. I know the hard working people behind Qvist
Well.. now we know there is a patent issue. What bugs me is how quickly people are making judgement and assumptions on Chinese companies and the xenophobic spirit underlying this behaviour. I have no doubt the qvist team has done a great innovative product that is patented or currently into a patent process. And I have no doubt elite has been honest in the development of their products and patent process (they apparently own some patent for this design. Two similar designs that appear at the same time from other parts of the world are far from rare. There have been a lot of designs and tech invented by several people at the same time in the world. The phone, light bulbs are a good example. Now it is a job for IP lawyers...
Did I hear right, the plastic bike is “bomb” proof? Has that been an issue?
Scary
Bring back rim brakes
Fine! Here you go 👉czcams.com/video/ZJ54LyB2DEc/video.html
GCN - Why are you partnered with and promoting a Chinese company that is blatantly stealing IP of qvist? Shameful
Hi Aaron, in our pinned comment you'll find a comment from Elite themselves - please do follow this to learn more about the situation
So this “Elite” company just blatantly copies designs and then attempts to sell them as their own? Where have we seen “wavy”’rim designs before? And now they copied a hub, too?
All aspects of the bicycle are adapted and improved, that's how it works. Should shimano and sram give up making derailleur because Campagnolo made them first?
Van Rysel,,,,good bike....are you fckn drunk? :D :D :D
More crap the average overweight weekend warrior doesn't need and can't afford. And personally I don't care about all the e-motorcycle junk anyway. Just another battery that needs to be manufactured and charged.
The plastic bike from Igus is nothing new. Sweden had plastic bikes around 40 years ago, and they were as equally attrocious.
the Itera!
Morally totally questionable to answer every second comment since yesterday but ignore the stolen patent ones. Wow gcn. Disappointed
Hi, thanks for the comment. Since publishing this video, Elitewheels has published a statement www.elite-wheels.com/company-news/investigation-into-patent-issues-regarding-the-drive-helixs-helical-dual-ratchet-system/
Sadly you promote stolen designs!shame on you!do your homework "experts".
That last bike the IGUS bike looks like something from the Fisher Price children's toy range....awful.
you wont be buying one then?!
Why they pushing that useless 1-by cross-chaining nightmate on nearly all hi end bikes is beyond understanding
What's so incomprehensible about that? Have you ever driven one?
@@swsf I don't know either, but the problem must be nontrivial - given that the only solution to it is classified (and a four-figure one ;)
@@PrzemyslawSliwinski I hate to crosschain even on 2x
@@TheUnrevealercross chaining isn't a thing on 1x as there's no second chainring to cross.
@@tinglydingle yes, when bike has only one rear sprocket then the chain is inline. Rest is just a compromise, and I just dont see a reason why to economy on front deraileur in a 10k+ bike? Weigth savings? Aero benefits? U just get a compromised version of everything.
Enve Frey -- the frame set almost 6000 Euro ?! HAHAHA -- these bikes are ridicolous -- only for rich people , dentists and lawyers etc.
Not so interested about this category of "bikes" actually !
Is GCN Tech or the "Elite" wheels and e-bike channel. First you canned GCN Plus, now it's mopeds and Chinese brand promotion 24/7?
We're very lucky to have brands like elite as partners here on the show 🙌 They allow us to do amazing videos like this, as for e-bikes, we love them. They really are great for those that can't/don't cycling often. As a gateway to a healthy lifestyle the E-bike has helped so many people. We're very sad about GCN+ too and it was never something we wanted to do. We hope you can enjoy our CZcams content though!
@@gcntech So very humble of you, despite promoting stolen tech, instead of doing your research, or even promoting a small company, that came up with the idea (Qvist), but can't afford to write you a fat Cheque
@@gcntech Can you explain why didn't disclose that you are partnered with Elitewheels directly in the video, and why we have to check the description to discover this little bit of information? Do you feel these partnerships increase or decrease your editorial independence?
@@gcntech Yeah but you are promoting a brand that copies another brand just because they are sponsoring/paying you. Hope Qvist get the proper recognition on being the first to have this double ratchet system. Qvist for the win!
When will your bosses realize that closing GCN+ was the worst idea ever? As a Canadian I won't be watching cycling this year because of flo bikes. And landlocked even though VPN for discovery+ they've made is so people can't sign up unless your billing address is in the correct country.
A heavy plastic bike is a very stupid idea. Only naive environmentalists buy one.
In the 80s, there was a bicycle brand, Itera, in Sweden that made bicycles in plastic. Most of it was made of plastic, even the wheels, cranks and handlebars were made of plastic. Heavy as few and flexed like a sheet of paper.
There was a time in the USA where things came in metal cans, glass bottles, and paper; people got fresh food, dairy, and beverages within their townships.
Now the oceans and seas are full of crap that doesn't biodegrade in half a million years. People eat food that spent a month on a ship from the other side of the planet, and a lot of food ingredients could be made into the packaging it's wrapped in. And we're supposedly "innovative and green." How about that 3,300 acres of solar panels busted by a hail storm in TX that's filling the water table with toxic chemicals?
womp womp
"A heavy plastic bike is a very stupid idea." - They didn't mention the weight of the bike.
"Only naive environmentalists buy one." - They mentioned it could be used as hire bikes.
"In the 80s...Heavy as few and flexed like a sheet of paper." - Material and structural science has move forward significantly in 40 years. Compare cars from the 80s and today.
Let's be a bit more optimistic and applaud the effort at least. Anything to put more people on bikes.
We can't judge this bike by bikes in the past 👀
And let’s be honest, it isn’t getting recycled it will end up in the trash or ocean like the rest of the plastic.
Sorry, it’s not twelve hundred and eighty grams………….its one thousand two hundred and eighty grams. Come on learn to count ffs😂😂😂😂😂
lol all you folks whining about patent infringement.
3 words. Nobody. Else. Cares.
Watch as elite sells the new wheels hubs in greater quality in half a year, than what that other god knows what German brand has in the past 2 years. Because, no one else cares about something as petty as that.
And shouting support qvist? Sure. Go buy their hub. Speak with your wallet, because talk is cheap. Or let’s be real, you won’t, because you don’t haven’t financially supporting anything cycling related since electricity was invented.
What’s in for you for defending stealing of intellectual property?
You are wrong several times. Beginning with the caring factor. I care. And it’s pretty f*** up.
@@br_obert what’s in it for me? Nothing. I just enjoy and love watching and calling out all your outrage which is nothing but empty hypocrisy.
Come on, talk is cheap. Or does your outrage lead to Qvist lining there wallet? Nope, it won’t. Because you’re still using your hub from 2000 as it “still works” on your steel bike. Plus, even if you need to, you’ll buy the cheapest hub that you can find instead of Qvist, because you think that modern day stuff are “overpriced needless complexity”.
I may be wrong lol, but at least I’be got the sense to see things for what they are instead of what you think it should be, which is more than what most of you seem to do lol.
So mind crushingly boring and pointless.
