Did you love the sound of the free hub as much as Si did? ⚙Which piece of tech did you like the most? Let us know 👇
yes
Can I get an mp3 of the freehub?
Almost sounded like a rattlesnake
I need that HipLock if you really can't angle grind through it. I haven't locked a bike up outside in 10 years it would be nice to do it again. Problem is around here in Los Angeles they just cut right through the frame if you use a beefy motorcycle chain or stuff like this, oh well.
What is the point of saving 10 grams on your $400 pedals if you have to lock it up with a 10lb lock??? 🙃
I got a couple chuckles out of Si's multiple insertions of the free hub clips.
We'll take that as a win 🙌
I wonder if you could do a follow up video on the free hub? I don’t feel it got enough attention in this video. In particular, what does it sound like?
I9 freehub sound, 10 hour cut.
😂
More freehub you say ... 🎶
That Colnago/Ferrari gathering has to be intolerable😂
said the vegan vegan
@@edgerat you can be sure that plenty of non-vegan, non-vegans would hate being there😂
I liked the Ferrari bike. If you are going to ride a stupid bike like that you might as well have the highest level brand label, cause that's what you are paying for anyway.
@___Bebo___ it's definitely not the highest level brand. They just sell it as such. There's good reason why no well off privateer racers that go to the wind tunnel ride Colnagos.
@___Bebo___ of course, you'd definitely be the sucker for gimmicks
Love the energy Si has in this video 😂
He's high on bike tech ⚙
What's that noise? Is it cicada season already? Nope, it's Si spinning a free hub again, and again, and again...
shhh
Si upping the big glasses game to the next level. That mini tool is actually a good idea. The 8mm is usually some extra bit that gets lost easily.
So many modern bikes don't have a single 8mm bolt anymore.
@@veganpotterthevegan It‘s only pedals. But if they become loose, you have a problem.
@chrisridesbicycles for pedals that use an 8mm. A lot of pedals don't. Some need a pedal wrench and I've even had pedals that need a 6mm😂
@@veganpottertheveganPedals?
@kokonanana1 yes, read my above comments. There's not that many of them
yes please for more compact and lighter multitools!
Get a 4mm and 5mm alloy key
Si is such a pleasure to listen to! Great video and the free hub… ❤
Sorry Si, that I missed you at the Sea Otter Classic. I was there but as a volunteer the most I was able to do was litterally run through from the Continental archway to both Med tents. I was camped out at NSP central aka Area D padocks. I momentarily became frozen at the Gates booth when I saw a Zerode Katipo with the Pinion drive system.
Superb Si
I would watch you present anything
Anything? That is a real fan 👌
That crank is a thing of beauty
As usual brilliant. Best from Sea Otter
Congatulations, this is hands down the best thumbnail of any GCN video ever.
For some reason the silly looking yellow helmet suits Si.
What can we say, you've either got style or you don't 😉
Elevating the big glasses game to new heights! That mini tool? Genius. No more fretting over the elusive 8mm bit that always seems to vanish into thin air. It's the small details like these that make a big impact, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.
It's awesome right! True bike nerd ground here 🤣
Always amazing to see how far the sport is moving away from my mid-range roadbike and Sunday spins.
Thanks Si ....free hub sound good ? ..Safe travels !!
rumour has it, he is still turning that freehub!
@@gcntech ASMR ?
5Dev crank is supposed to be aero, but then they add draggy crankarm machined bits and ribs on the back of the chainring.
Ribs in dirty air are less consequential.
they had an aero cover on it on the bike on the stand at the show.
That freehub 🤤🎼
Music to our ears 👂
Awesome.
3:37 The way Shimano makes the DA cranks before switching to bonding.
#gcntech which freehub system has les drag when coasting? And the difference between high and low engagement ref to drag also?
3:24 Hot tech? Sounds crickets protesting!
That Pinarello is sleek.
Pretty special looking right 👌
Would love to know the stiffness characteristics of titanium crank and a possible galvanic corrosion with steel?
who cares, what matters is that it sells and that the posers have a new useless and unnecessary toy
@@makantahi3731 haha
Sea Otter has given you a bonanza of great content.
what was your favourite bit of tech?!
0:43 yeah 40mm is good for road bike. i think for gravel 57mm should be the standard so you could fit some skinnier mtb tires to it if you want but it wouldn't be as big as mtb.
Ooo interesting! The lines are blurring, would you go gravel or MTB?
@@gcntech well i prefer 57mm mtb tires for winter(because of snow) but in summer i prefer something like 35-40mm and if we are speaking of the frame then i prefer gravel because it is more comfortable for me.
@@gcntech the reason i think gravel bikes should also have clearance for some mtb tires is because gravel bikes are the do it all bike so i think that's basically a requirement for do it all bike.
3:14 any recycling/repurposing of carbon fibre is good to see because usually it's landfill only for busted carbon. I believe Silca reuses carbon fibre flakes in their sealant too, but there are few use cases so far that I know of.
that freehub is a rattlesnake waiting to strike what a sound
Just what a cool freehub should sound like 🙌
7:39 lmao 😀 i would have probably done the same 😀
Even more hot tech please
EVEN MORE! 👀
I'd buy the giro today if they just listed it. My understanding with UCI rules was that everything used in competition needed to be commercially available, so i'm not sure why it's so difficult to purchase.
"It's probably enough, now !" => not sure, Si', I'm happy if you are !
Si, you forgot to mention that the Pinarello also had input from Pauline Ferrand Prevot.
And yes, as a I9 owner it is the most satisfying freehub noise ever. At speed it sounds like you are being chased by bees. That inspires to go even faster. I am anxiously waiting for a proper aero road wheelset. I will be the first buyer
I think she had input into the Hardtail and Pidcock the full sus.
The giro helmet looks like it should be in the movie "spaceballs"
Congratulations from 🇦🇹🇦🇹✌️✌️👍👍👍☕️
First time this early so I'll ride with it.
Early bird... gets better engagement 😉
That Giro helmet is big enough to hide the horrendous glasses Si normally wears. Not sure if that makes it good or bad.
Great video but it’s a shame Si didn’t do a sound check on that freehub
Get that man some industry nine wherls
Plane to catch on the last day? Couldn't stick around to enjoy some fabulous California riding?
We might have some great riding videos dropping soon on GCN 😉
That freehub sounds like predator!
Hahaha is that a good thing?
@@gcntech It might make me stop free wheeling and get back on the pedals 😂
But it does sound damn good tbf
The mix of different screw heads is annoying ... but if everything would be torx it would be a big win. It really is the superior head compared to philips or hex by far.
now this is a divisive topic!
@@gcntech I can recommend the "Principles of operation" section of the wikipedia articel about Torx as a short read. Everything listed there matches my own experience and since then I became a torx "fan" if want to say so :D
This I will need to read. Currently I loathe them.
@@flyt129 what if you are just an author of that article?😑
@@gcntechnah it's not. Had inline skates with torx. Never messed that up. It's just better.
Nearly a decade 😮!!! Wow as long as that…
If you were trying to be annoying with the free hub…it worked. Why didn’t you add some beeps to start it?
Tell me, Topeak, when was the last time a flathead screwdriver or 8mm hex were used on a bike in price range matching these tools?
it may not be the "perfect" tool for the job, as even Topeak would recommend using a proper 8mm, however, in an emergency - it will do the job! Think of it as a bonus tool! 🤗
@@gcntech yeah, that's my question: what is the emergency of needing a 8mm or flathead nowadays.
Remeber them on mid/low range MTB pedals only
@@feedbackzaloop crank bolts?
@@gcntech SRAM pinch bolt? If it gives out on the road, you're done anyway. And you don't make 50+Nm with a pocket tool anyway
Pedals mainly.
Pretty soon companies will be selling pedals, cranks and other parts that are negative weights and even more ultra aero judging by their marketing every year.
that aero helmet is crazy
would you wear it? 💨
@@gcntechwhen can the public buy it?
The closest thing I've ever seen to the design is speed skiers, going for speed record straight down a pitch. They wear a similar butt ugly helmet.
I am guessing the silly helmet is also going to be silly expensive. Would I wear it? Let’s just say my self respect is worth less than 10 watts any day. At 5 watts the answer is probably. At 3, let me think about it.
@@MichaelWilliams-iv6dj I suppose if we really wanted ultimate speed, we'd race bicycles inside a vacuum tube while wearing space suits.
So of I told you I'm pop3 would that help you keep your distance?
That free hub tho..
👌... music to our ears
Whats bad about torx? They are mechanically the best key to have!
Torx is the superior head choice for almost any fastener
it is certainly becoming more and more popular
Giro arrowhead helmet is zwift robopacer head 😂
with this hub most of the distance would be without pedaling xD
Hahahaha does that count as an Ebike?
🤣Hubs are like swiss made mechanical watches ;-) nice to hear
"How cool is that?"
The 51 looks nice. But the back tire is on backwards.
As someone new to road bicycles I have to ask why do you guys enjoy a loud free hub so much? Is it similar to you like a loud exhaust sytem on a car or motorcyle which most petrolheads would enjoy? When I made a test ride with an $8000 bicycle the free hub was so loud that I decided to get the cheaper bike without that "problem" 😂
I put a little extra grease in mine to keep the noise down. Sometimes the sound is cool, but it doesn't have to be as loud as some do it.
@@dancooperish ah, good to know. So you can reduce the noise by more grease.
When are they going to start adding a periscope to bike helmets so you can look forward while keeping your head down?
They really should. Today at the gym I put my head on the bike. Now I want aero bars for my forehead. It was very comfortable.
*aero periscopes 😉
7:50 you looks a lot like Mouth of Sauron from The lord of the ring lol
That industry Nine Free hub though 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Dreamy right 🎶
bike manufacturers are missing an opportunity here: they should be making multi-tools specific to the bike: there's no point in carrying e.g. a Torx 25 if you bike doesn't have any Torx bolts! Pinarello and Specialized (S-Works) e.g. could make them out of titanium and charge 250 international currency units/galactic credits.
Interesting ideas 👀 That said, would that not mean more proprietary tools and parts?
@@gcntech I would say that "more proprietary" is the direction the bike industry is going in. I was surprised recently to see one bike (forget which) is now using Torx bolts for the seat stem whereas previously it was a standard hex bolt.
Is gcn still selling socks they used to have when they first started for a monthly subscription?
.... he' still there, spinning it, even now... isn't he?
rumour has it he missed his flight
What? Torx is the best screw drive!
👀
Agree, way less chance of rounding out than philips or hex. The kind of bolts.
@@ellipticalsoul works on hex bolts too.
Why is there zero GCN coverage of electric road or gravel bikes at Sea Otter? Is there none at all?
Race bike geometry, 40mm tire clearance……sign me up!!!
bump it up to 55 and then we'll talk
So cool right! One bike for everything 🙌
Rattlesnake of a hub that one. Lush
Sounds mean doesn't it!
I wan tto see an office worker / tosser who rides on weekends in the new TT helmet 😂
the product designers at 3t are going to pay in the afterlife for putting accursed torx bolts on everything.
9, APR 1024 AD
"8mm"? Head scratch but I'm thinking a tapered crank bolt? Not on a typical road bike, but where else???
Pedals usually.
Pedals is the most common on road, or maybe cranks but you aren't going to get 40Nm through that small tool unless you are a body builder
@@simonrichardson5259 indeed, but on a ride? Tell me why I need to remove a pedal when riding.
Ahead of a chain tool, for example. 🤷🏻♂️
@@ellipticalsoul agreed, but undoing a pedal on a ride when I might need a chain tool?
The fudged up 8mm tool is clever but it’s not a solution to an ‘out-on-the-road’ problem.
Both Look and Speedplay pedals use an 8mm allen key to tighten them. I’m pretty sure Time pedals do as well.
I giggled at Si comparing his arm to the mannequin. Pure cyclists are twiggy up top - and I suppose more aerodynamic than a weightlifter/cyclist like me ;)
PS: what was that sound again? bzzzzzzz
Cyclists come in every shape 🙌
@@gcntech heck yes

I'm flattered, but PLEASE, I'm a single man!
New tire width will Certainly call for a Redesign of Urban park bike paths and sidewalks. Here anyway.
In what way?
@gcntech Wider tires wider bikes? Trying at a little humor. Only one laughing I guess. Enjoy your programming very much! Thanks!
most optimal ...
6:49 it turns the rider into a suppository.........
What do you mean Torx are your least favourite screws? Jesus Christ where should I start? On a practical basis Torx screwdrivers are Allen compatible so I would actually prefer a multitool equipped only with Torx and save more weight. On a technical basis a Torx system has a larger angle for the circumferentially directed force. Wich means the system has more grip and can handle more power. What is there not to like?
The "FiftyOne" logo/font is ugly but the bike is cool. Love a good lightweight bike with big tire clearance 👌
There is something special about riding a light weight bike 🪶 Throw big tyres in the mix and you're sitting pretty 😍
Still haven’t worked out why all GCN presenters now pronounce Titanium as Tit-anium rather an Ti-tanium 🤷♂️
Because we’re British and that’s how Brits say it. You wait til we start on aluminium.
👀
It's still weird seeing a Pinarello mountain bike!
Would a Propain road bike be even more weird? 🤔
It takes a second but once you're over it all your left with is a feeling love awe 😍

Industry 9 and their rattlesnake hubs.
👌
Clicking is cool, but adds a lot of drag. I'd like to have a silent hub on my gravel bike. Though they're almost impossible to find in my country.
Drag doesn't matter when you freewheel. But since you are concerned anyway, most draggy are silent sprag clutch hubs, not clicky pawl hubs.
@@feedbackzaloop I'm not agree. Check video called " SPIN FOREVER! Onyx Racing's Silent MTB Hubs " from Vital MTB. There Onyx hub spins for 1.5 minutes.
Here's a wayyyy too small and much too light road bike with wheels so light that holding a line is impossible and if your wattage drops 3% the guy behind you clips your wheel!!! Awesome.
Here are some $100 tools for Tools
Those helmets...

450 grams for just the crank? Not sure that's "super light"
Imagine spending all that money for 9mins of video
Hey there, you seen the other two vids that came out before this one?
When you’re searching for stolen POC helmets, be sure to check for illicit free hubs
😂 🕵️
TORX are far superior in every way to Allen
Wow! That is a big claim, bring the facts? 🤨
@@gcntech I am a mechanical engineer, but I thought it was common knowledge that the Torx design allows far more torque to be safely applied with no risk of rounding the head. You can also at a push use a smaller size key if you have to.There is also no metric / imperial confusion with Torx.
Interesting that the coolest thing in this video was a Ferrari 😁
We love a bike car colab 👌
i wuld buy time pedals. but the cleats are tthe worst i ever had. they make noise from first time you use it. if they fix the problem i buy again. but with that cleats never again.

The freehub sounds like a rattlesnake.
