This was at Eric Clapton's crossroads concert in 2007. I was there and nobody knew who she was. She was playing with Jeff Beck and when she came out and did this solo the entire crowd fell silent everyone was absolutely amazed. All you could hear is people going who is she?
I was there too! Amazing day of music and Tal definitely wowed everyone.
Her bass lines made Jeff Beck smile.... What else is there to say?
Tal rocks!
Jeff smiled at everyone because he’s a gentleman. And Tal is brilliant but nowhere near the best

Tal's solo is so thoughtful and melodic, it's just not a solo, it's a musical work. She is not a shredder, but an accomplished artist.
It reminded me of one of Geddy Lee's solos. It was awesome.
It is a boring solo. Was not melodic to me. David Gilmour guitar playing slow solos are melodic.
That’s a good way of saying Les Claypool is a bass God.

Tal has the chops and the attitude to tour (and solo,) with JEFF BECK at 18 years old. Big props to her!
As much as I LOVE Tal and she is my favorite, there is no such thing as the best in the world. It's not a competition. One of the greatest for sure!
Exactly! I can't stand it when people act like it's a freaking competition, especially because there are so many genres, styles and what not involved, and preferences are subjective! To each their freaking own, and whatever it is you prefer, doesn't make that which you don't bad: Total failure in rational reasoning and logic, and those that engage in it are most often afflicted by such thinking due to their own flaws and failures. I don't like a lot of stuff, but I'm not a fool to call someone bad, just because I don't dig the music they are playing.
For sure. That mountaintop isn't a peak, it's a small plateau.
@@ItWentChunkaCHUNK And the more people master the skill, the bigger the plateau has to get.

I like Tal Wilkenfeld. Her bass actually sounds like a bass, not just a bassy guitar - and her lines are not just fast, they are musically interesting.
Cos she uses a jazz bass and plays above the bridge pickup right? That's the best part of a jazz bass pickup configuration
Musicality wins. Technical wizardry is great but to help carry a song, especially with the great Jeff Beck, a solo needs to mesh, not go on a fireworks tangent.
The word is jazzy, I believe.
No, Victor Wooten's tits where more impressive.
meh, she has reverberation chambers. she cheats
Tal is on another level, amazing... the best in a walk.... Jeff Beck bowed down to her after solo in Crossroads in Chicago, nough said.

i listened to the 2nd bass solo several times on repeat. every time i want to listen into the music, to feel it better ... but find myself zoning out in after a few notes just to come back at the end. mesmerizing.
The artist that was playing on the fanned fretted bass was impressive and from a technical perspective it was a very good performance.
Chris Squire was on of the first progressive rock bassist that I really found stood out above many of the other rock bassist along with John Entwistle and Geezer Butler, and Paul McCartney, whom was the first bassist that I knew of, of course none of them utilised the slapping that most of the newer exceptional bassist do, most rock bassist used picks with a few exceptions, like Flea, for example. I play guitar, but I appreciate good bass playing.
Thank you for posting these videos!

Tal is a wonderful talent and she embraced that moment in time and we all share it with her. Inspirational for sure. Oh and that Davie 504 guy isn't too bad either. Here, this person, showing the "Art" of the correct way of stepping on the right note, in order to give a perfect pitching experience. My favourite is les claypool, of course. Because it s not about solo only, it is a fully integrated solo in a song “one better”. Les’s bass is the “main” leading instrument. This fact is a breakthrough of all stereotypes that BASS has supportive or rythm-section role in a band. Unique person.

loved jammin drums on my bed to these solos thanks haha
I have been a guitarist, 6 string, for over 40 years. It always amazes me when a bassist can play a lead guitar solo exactly like I play it on a 6 string. It took me years to be able to stretch a few frets on a 6 string fretboard. A bassist playing the same solo as me would have to stretch much farther. A bass fretboard is a lot longer and the interval between frets is larger. I don't know how they do it.
They just go: hey ima show this non slapping guy whats what

1:33 That Bass's neck looks kinda twisted and uncomfortable to handle
The neck is straight. The frets just give it the illusion of being twisted due to the angle. It's called a fanned fret neck.
Dingwall bass. Fanned frets take some getting used to but the trade off is a longer string scale with a more solid fundamental tone and vastly improved intonation. If you ever get to play one make sure it's one made in Canada and not the Indonesian models - the tone and build quality are rather different.
