    How appropriate that he was born on the anniversary of Galileo's death, and died on the day of Einstein's birth. He will be remembered as most influential person in all of science, not only due to his astronomical intellect, but because his very life was sustained by scientific advances in medicine. He will be missed and remembered forever.

    • @princeweekes1
      @princeweekes1 Před 6 lety +45

      Kokocola, He didn't say he wasn't influential, he said he wasn't the most. Kids in the hood don't know who he is, but everyone knows who Einstein is. In fact most people don't even know of Hawkings great achievements. Sadly it normally takes death to expand to that kind of influence. Watch and see how much his work will spread now that we've lost him.

    • @princeweekes1

      Flat Earth Revelations It's one thing to have a conversation on a page of an appropriate topic. It's another to copy and paste your bullshit on every page you can find. This page and this day are about a physicist that will be sorely missed. Have some goddamn respect and keep the conversation about the shape of the earth on the other discussion.

    • @jmcsquared18
      @jmcsquared18 Před 6 lety +8

      suchdoge Silver gold Maybe what I said was slightly hyperbolic, but it's not a crazy thing to say. I commonly read Hawking's papers on Euclidean quantum gravity and particle creation near black holes, and in my work, his musings on information led to a revolution in physics that includes holography and Ads/CFT correspondence, which are enormous steps forward in understanding quantum gravity. So to me, he is insanely influential, but I grant you that now that he's passed away, many more people will be aware of how important he has been to physics.

    • @mrpotatohed4
      @mrpotatohed4 Před 6 lety +7

      Most influential definitely not. He pales in comparison to Einstein, James Clerk Maxwell, and Isaac Newton. Even Michael Faraday without a proper education was much more influential. And certainly the early founders of quantum mechanics changed everything. I don't think you understand what influential means. I would think Michio Kaku has been more influential, not just due to his contributions to string field theory but by how much people, like him and NDT, make science more "accessible" to common people and get them interested in it. I'm as sad as anyone that hawking died, but a person's death is no cause to lie about what they are.

      @Andrew Perry aka Drip Finesse I feel the same way!
      It seems to me that most people nowadays treat political parties like their favorite football team that they will support no matter what.
      It's unfortunate that our society has locked us into only two political parties, turning many important issues into partisan feuds.
      Lack of a political middle ground reduces complex matters to black and white; win and lose.
      It's no wonder that politics has become so divisive, that it's commonly considered rude to discuss it in public (and that's the nice way to frame it).
      Yes, the root of the problem is the failings of human psychology. But we can't redesign our brains, so instead of setting ourselves up for failure,
      we need to model our government to account for those human failings. In many ways, that's exactly what the Framers did with separation of powers and
      checks and balances. But they were just people, they couldn't account for everything.
      We need 3rd-party candidates with a more diverse range of philosophies, that are actually serious contenders in politics, and that aren't considered a "wasted" vote.

      Well the Coronavirus is nothing compared to the potential super dangerous virus that COULD appear. The coronavirus, while still deadly to select few individuals, is not dangerous to us as a species. Imagine if a human made biological weapon was released by accident which has already been developed since long ago and do exist. Those are no joke, specifically designed to spread as quickly as possible and be as deadly as possible while also being as subtle as possible. The common 10-20 year interval pandemic is not the danger unless something special or rare happens, but rather the very things we've already created.

    "How could you not just wonder what´s going on inside this guy´s head. I think our greatest gift as a species is not our body, we´re not the fastest, we´re not the strongest, our body hardly distinguishes itself in any way in the animal kingdom, our greatest sort of gift in the Tree of Life is our mind and perhaps no one knows that better than Stephen Hawking and so much so that he does not take his mind for granted, enabling him to go places that we might never even dream of, simply because he has power of mind, where he has power from no other part of his body so maybe it´s we who are imprisoned thinking our body matters, when in fact at the end of the day it´s really all about your thoughts, all about your dreams, all about how we react to our life experiences in this world and share it with others. That is a cosmic perspective".

    This is borderline emotional. Im not a scientist, im not a student.. Id give anything to be involved with things like this. But im just an average husband, father, regular guy who loves space and nerdy things. I think Neil isnt nervous in front of Mr Hawking, i think hes also borderline emotional. Thats a HUGE experience for anyone, let alone the guy following in his footsteps, and very obviously becoming the next hawking. This is such a good video. Nerd fuel brain candy is absolutely the best thing there ever has been. Please please keep this going forever Neil and anyone else involved.

      me too, i feel the same way. i wish i could have majored in astrophysics but i know i'd have suffered if i had done that so i've taken it up as something i'm interested in and invest a lot of time in. i also wish i could be involved in all of this, to have the honour of having met THE stephen hawking. but alas, may he rest in peace.

      Anything is possible, all you have to do is open your mind amd think of ideas, the hard part is making an equation or way to prove it, but anything is possible for anyone 🤘🏼

      @@arcosprey4811 Not everyone at NASA is an astrophysicist. There are so many things that go into exploring and understanding the awesome universe that we live in.
      Also, working at NASA is not the only way to lead a life of scientific & technological fulfilment that incredible nature can give us.
      Good Luck to you for rest of your journey on this unique, wet rock through spacetime!

    Bodies decay .., energy spreads as a matter of entropy .. , but great ideas representing the human saga to understand the universe such as prof.stephen hawking would long live in our memories and emotions .
    Rest in peace 💜

    Hawking's was one of the truly great intellects of our time. I think one of the wisest things he ever said was this:
    "Hawking said it is likely that alien life exists, but a visit from extraterrestrials might be similar to Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas.
    "If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," he said. "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet."
    In the new program, "Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking," he speculated that aliens' capabilities "would be only limited by how much power they could harness and control, and that could be far more than we might first imagine."
    He said it might even be possible for aliens to harvest the energy from an entire star.
    "Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach," Hawking said."

      I read an old article from BBC that said Stephen Hawking gave a warning over making contact with aliens: "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet." And he also reminded what happened to the Native Americans when Columbus landed in America. I think he has a very important point.

    Im watching this is 2023, this is the first time im seeing this format of startalk. It reminds me of shows in the late 90s. I prefer Neil and chuck sitting in his office or just webcams to this format. Though Jana being on more would be amazing too! (Jana is amazing could listen to her for hours).
    Listening to this just 5 years after it was made Michio sounds like a tabloid newspaper writer LOL
