'It's out!': Medvedev rages at officials in two different outbursts at Monte Carlo

  • Daniil Medvedev had two separate outbursts during his Monte Carlo Masters run. During his match against Gaël Monfils he was a set up when he angrily disagreed with two calls on the baseline and vented his displeasure at the line judge.
Umpire Mohamed Lahyani twice came on court to check calls and calm down the Russian fourth seed. Medvedev was 40-15 up but lost his serve and then went 4-1 down in the second set before winning five games in a row to seal a 6-2, 6-4 success and progress to a last-16 meeting with compatriot Karen Khachanov. Medvedev was proved correct both times and after the game, when Lahyani said he would apologise, Medvedev replied: 'How can you apologise, I lost the freaking game. How did I lose the game when it's out? It's out, it's out.'
The next day, during his match against Khachanov, Medvedev was once again upset by officials after a bad line call while he was serving, this was after he hit a double fault losing his serve. Medvedev told the officials to 'open [their] fricken eyes' and questioned who would 'take action' against the bad calls.

Medvedev is right in the sense that they have hawkeye but they don't use it and that nobody takes responsibility for f-ups. The ball was out, it's proven but Medvedev still loses the point. And the most useless person in tennis is the supervisor because he will side with the chair umpire no matter what. Under no circumstances will the supervisor ever overrule a decision of the chair umpire. They are just there to say "let's play" and that nothing can be done.

    • @matthewbauman

Supervisor handles matters of law/rule. Umpire handles matters of fact during the match. Anyone who has been to a live tennis match knows how the heat can be brutal and other distractions like crowd noise, shadows on the court etc., will obviously impact human referees. Also, for serves the ball moves so fast the human eye simply cannot keep up.

Man I’ve said so many times that there needs to be challengeable Hawkeye on clay, just like there is for every other major tournament. This reminded me of the 2013 RG semi final match between Djokovic and Nadal when Djokovic had break point against Nadal. Djokovic’s shot was called out, but the replay of Hawkeye said it was in, so I’ve always found it ridiculous that there’s never been the option to use Hawkeye as a challenge on clay, cos sometimes the ball marks can be deceiving and not always be right as seen here.

If I understood correctly, he stopped playing because the ball was out and the linesperson didn't make the call. Lahyani had to intervene.

It's 2024 folks--we have Hawkeye. Use it! Monte Carlo is a joke tournament. At least 3 very costly bad calls against Meddy. Can't win that way....Shame on the ATP for letting this joke of a tournament be called a Masters 1000 event----maybe 1000 missed calls! Unbelievable.

There is more to this rant than meets the eye. This is the accumulated frustration brought on by losing the Aussie Open final when up two sets to love. This is the frustration of knowing that his window is likely closing with the ascendance of Alcaraz and Sinner. Still, this is the moment when Medvedev needs to dig down mentally and physically and find a new gear. It starts with NOT freaking out about line calls.

I've been saying this for years. If you want umpires, that's fine by me. But they should be fined for every wrong call they make that isn't overturned by a challenge. Electronic Line calling is still somewhat difficult to implement on clay, but they should still use whatever they have to aid their final judgment.

ok lets introduce a new electric tape for line accuracy that lights up on the court exactly where the ball hits the line and has zoom in options for the judge and crowd to see to prevent corrupt calls and allow proper alignment and order for athletes, this is a new idea I'm putting out there, who's interested? The tape would light up temporarily for playback purposes and fadeout pretty quickly, allowing for obvious distinction between a foot mark or ball mark as it would copy the indentation exactly to the pattern and placement.

Yep, Daniil went out of control a bit too far, loosing his menthal focus, which caused him a match agnst Karen. That was his anger management problem obviously.
But lack of any clear responsibility for linesmans and other officials mistakes (often crucial) - absolutely reasonable.
Atp must implement obligatory video control systems for all 500+ tournaments and some new rules, so that you always get your point back, if challenge proves your call.
And some transparent system of material fines, suspension and anticorruption investigations for judges involved in such controversial bad decision cases.
