- We've reached the final day of 2014 SEMA Week brought to you by 76, and only we would dare to bring this ridiculous mix of vehicles together for a grudge race on an unprepped airport runway. Fred Williams, Jessi Lang, Mike Sabounchi and Mike Finnegan begged and bribed SEMA Show exhibitors to loan them vehicles for a ¼ mile drag race and, though Finnegan and Sabounchi failed, the group still managed to acquire a Jeep riding on tank treads, a fresh-off-the-floor 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat, the infamous Hemi-powered ’55 Chevy Bel Air from Roadkill, and a turbocharged 2013 Chevy Sonic to do battle.
The racers are as different as the cars. Finnegan lives in the world of hot rods, Lang regularly pilots the best the OEM carmakers have to offer, Williams spends all of his time in the dirt, and Sabounchi hops up every compact car on the planet. Who will come out on top? Watch and find out!

That was great fun to watch. The cinematography is exceptional. Always moving the camera to tell the story, not obtrusive or distracting. The banter between everyone was relaxed and really gave a sense of true fun. The subtle "insight" shots, the puppy, the phone "online at the start line", very cool. Thanks for doing these films, Roadkill n HRG are right on the mark, fun to watch. Fred, Dirt Kicks it too, that crew of yours must suffer! To all the crews and cinematographers who bring this fun to our laptops, Thank You Very Much!

LostInPhilly89 i hope you realize the numbers. They have the same power, but blasphemi is 750 lbs lighter than the hellcat, probably more. Plus the blasphemi had race tires while the hellcat was on street tires. The manual didnt make any difference. If anything it slowed him down because he had to pause to shift.

@jonny j except that the hellcat is stock while blasphemi was built specifically for a drag strip. This is like comparing a racecar from the 70s to a regular car today.
LostInPhilly89 nothing but the body is from the 50s, and it is not a stock vehicle like the Hellcat. I love the old cars, have several of them from small block screamers and brute force big blocks, but I know that my Hellcat will destroy them in a drag race. In the 60s a sub 15 second time was considered extremely fast. There are V6 family cars that can run 15s now. From the factory, my Hellcat is faster than my ‘68 R/T Coronet by easily 2 seconds. My Ram 1500 Hemi single cab can run low 14s.
hellcat was also built specifically for the drag strip bud. and with modern engine technology. sure there are more mods that could be done but its a production car made to be dragged.@@Bufa7777

Matthew Bowen they are pretty reliable. my friend works with an oil field company and drives one tho the yard before loading up the work truck to head to the field. he drives quickly through bumpy packed dirt roads every day and its still running fine.
T Wayland your friend must of bought a car that was made on a wednesday. I also have a friend that bought a sonic, brand new 2013 and he has had nothing but problems. He completely regrets it and will never buy a new domestic again. but hey, to each its own.

Defenestrated Window Sounded a bit more Jetsons than Futurama, I think most of those have a slightly lower tone than the Jetsons stuff did.

Finnegan got a great launch in the Blasphemi, and the initial hookup after that was what made the difference. I think the Hellcat would've reeled it in if the runway was a little longer though.
the hellcat has less drag than blasphemi, so of course eventually it would overtake
AnarchistMetalhead Probably, but not necessarily; power-to-weight ratio and gearing also come into play as well, although the latter is much more important. Neither car is particularly aerodynamically efficient.
Blasphemi also has 5.13s i think so the hellcat would eventually pull it but not in the 1320

MarchuxProductions A stock Challenger isn't particularly aerodynamic either, let alone one that has been kitted out.
This is one of the best shows I have ever seen

They wanted for the Blasthemi to win. Hellcat is quicker, but that's not how they wrote the show.
+kanervatie There's no way a hellcat is quicker, they both have 700 horsepower but the Blasphemi is way lighter, has slicks and is a GASSSER.
Gassers are built for drag racing, Blasphemi is a purpose built car and it's only purpose is to tear the strip up. The hellcats fast as hell, but it's also heavy and built to be a street car.

The verdict - You used the wrong numbers first of all. The Blasphemi had 1200. Yet the far heavier Hellcat somehow almost won? It’s almost like horsepower doesn’t matter when you don’t have Dodge engineering.
its not about HP and weight , bud.
there are a TON of factors that play into acceleration
for instance:
traction
drive train
aerodynamics.

Yes. The hemi name is given to cars with hemis we get that. But it is more of a sales pitch rather than a performance stand point
***** It's still a sales pitch, that's why they brought back the hemispherical combustion chamber instead of using modern design. The hemispherical combustion chamber was a great advancement for its time, but we don't live in a world with flat combustion chambers anymore the pentagonal design is better. Therefore when when Dodge brought back the honey they did it only because they thought they could sell it to old fans.
Todays Hemi engines are as much Hemi engines as the great Fire Power 50s Chrysler Hemi and the legend The 426 Hemi. They have a domed shaped combustion chamber, plugs down the center of the chamber, cross flow canted valve arrangements tilted to help ingest air faster & domed pistons and huge intake and exhaust ports. The small quench area of the chamber in the head does little more than take weight off the top of the pistons for a faster revving engine while retaining all the same Hemi effects & advantages, its completely 100% a Hemi engine.
BillyJoe1305 Furthermore the Chrysler Hemi 60+ years after its introduction has been the performance benchmark for Maximum performance. Weather you drive a chevy or ford or Chrysler product in Top Fuel, you use a Chrysler Hemi, nothing beats a Hemi in top fuel, not even 4 valve per cylinder dual cam designs. Nothing beats a Hemi. Its KING. The fastest piston engined vehicles use Hemispherical heads and 99 times out of 100 those engines are Chryslers.

HEL YEAH FINNEGAN!!! that blastphemi is a monster. definitely the car i would have picked (but it would have been the Hellcat if it had a 6 speed, come on Jessi step up your game and use you left foot for something other than brake launches)
not a chance, a 6 speed woulda had it up in smoke or babying the throttle to get it t move off the line, there is NO configuration beside modding that Challenger for drag racing with a big stall slicks or ET's rear end adjustment all the rest and even then they would both need to do burnout to get a good launch AND THEN the 55's still gunna smoke it coz it weighs less makes the same power and already is built for drag racing!

Sweet race guys! I knew the Hellcat made more power that Blasphemi . But I was Pretty sure it weighed more.... alot more. I honestly didnt think Blephemi would pull out such a Decisive victory! The 12 year old Gear head in me is doing cartwheels in my head!
Hellcat would have had a better chance if it also had slicks. Either way, it was a good, fun, and entertaining race.
Eh. Blasphemi is a Drag car. The Hell cat has Things like... AC, Cruise control, a Stereo, the ability to go around corners. Yeah. Blasphemi one. but on a day to day basis The Hellcat is a better "car"
