1985 C4 Corvette-Kart vs. 2014 Lingenfelter C7! - Roadkill Ep. 35

- čas přidán 27. 11. 2014
- On this episode of Roadkill, we hack the entire body off a C4 Corvette, cage it, and call it a race car! Freiburger and Finnegan fulfill a dream that began four-plus years ago when they first wrote the "Vette Hack" article for HOT ROD magazine, slicing 900 pounds of ugly fiberglass off of a 1985 Corvette to prove that it would handle better in the autocross. Less weight means more acceleration, better cornering, and better stopping. The idea is proven once again here as the guys add a 350-horsepower rat-rod engine, rebuild the trans, remove more weight, and make it rigid, safe, and stylish with a full rollcage. Next, they head into a shootout with a 2014 Corvette upgraded by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering with an Edelbrock blower, Kooks headers, and Corsa exhaust for a wicked-sounding 640 horsepower. And then, of course, there's the off-road mayhem. The Vette Kart rocks!

"we're starting a trend with this vette kart"

It's even bleeding over into other cars - I've seen people do this to 350Zs.

I think it's safe to say the c4 Corvette is the Swiss army knife of hot rods
Not particularly great at anything. Good at everything.
@@Prince_Luci I know that was my point lol
I've watched this video probably 10 times. I've been working on a vett kart of my own and this video keeps me motivated
Aye well how’s it coming ?
Wonders of the c4 corvette are being discovered saweet. I can only imagine these guys’ reactions if that car had the zf 6-speed. Monster transmission.
Who is back here watching old good roadkill episodes over and over again ?
Not only did Leroy show up later but David even named his engine white trash like Jackstand Jimmy named his truck 😂
I got a draw ticket on a 22 Chevrolet Corvette targa sky blue black interior tinted windows $95,553.00 Canadian in value draw is Nov. 19 22. Thank you Roadkill first time I seen your show IT WAS AWESOME!
I have a feeling Cleetus McFarland was watching this episode as a kid.

That lingenfelter vette sounds really good, the guys did a good job on recording the sound of the exhaust in this vid

"A New engine I had sitting around" MUST BE NICE!
Am I wrong? How could a basically stock 350ci with decent heads and cam run quicker with 1200 cfm of carbs over a single 750-800cfm?
Its what made c4s so great in the 80s and 90s. Corvette at the time of the c4 needed to have separate class in racing because of how well they performed. Plus 305-400 cubic inch range engines are good for track use, still a "small" engine that makes explosive power and not much to make it.
watch engine masters, engines always make more peak power with bigger carbs
You did what all of Motown has dreamed about.
Now... If you could make it a mudder... Y'all whould be killin' it!!😮😊
Best looking vette I've seen ever! 9:49
The world's first ugly Corvette. I still understand and appreciate the work you you guys did, and know that this is actually awesome.

Question: was that Willow Springs raceway? If so my last race there was a 12 hour GP motorcycle race. Sand on the track was always a real thrill!!
Yeah, near the end he said food in inner Palmdale, probably Lucky Luke's haha
Straight out of a MAD MAX movie...
Simply epic 😊
damm, now thats my kinda daily... love it
The 305 from the how much nitrous can an engine take episode would be perfect for the vette-kart.
Leroy's long lost brother
And that's exactly how good the continental tires are
You just gave everyone a great idea for a new toy. C4's were basically worthless until now.
There are so many applications for this. Autocross, rally, hill climbs, drag, shenanigans. The list goes on and on.
***** That might be true, but it still is the most disliked Corvette ever. They don't hold their value like any other 'vette. Not many people love them.
***** for me I don't like the corvette after 67 even here in southern Ontario where cars rot from the road salt in the winter the dam things are everywhere most people because it was a corvette did not drive them in the winter and even the ones that did still are in decent shape as long as it was undercoated
Joni Hags They get lots of hate on the internet, but in reality they're still valued in the Corvette community. I have a '90 and I'm always getting compliments even in the rough shape that it's in.
Joni Hags The 1975 had 165HP, the worst Corvette ever. A truly unfortunate story the Vette in the mid 1970's. I do like the looks of the mid to late 1970's Vettes, but they're embarrassingly slow, and they had terrible build quality as well. To be fair though, every car at the time was choked by reg's, most were terrible and the best were only decent.
The U.S. market took a long time to recover, and the foreign cars sneaked in, namely the Japanese. They haven't left. I don't think they will. It's okay though, they are keeping the U.S. market driving and developing. Our biggest weakness in this industry has always been complacency.
Joni Hags
They're like 3rd gen F-bodies, too new to be classics and too old to be worth much of anything.
Looks like a Corvette and an Ariel Atom got married in Vegas and had, well, not quite a lovechild, which was subject to severe abuse during it's formative years, and then grew up to be projecting all it's anger and frustration into the world. Love it.

Amazing. hahaa
Pure gold...lol
Genius!! hahahahaahhaahahaha
For very little money, you have a ariel Atom beater, while not a nice,it would be hard to beat, with a little TLC,brakes could easily be setup to work really well, they took out a 1000 lbs and did nothing to the brake bias.Even so,some body work on the Corvette frame, powder coating, proper Nascar poly windshield, sidebar for ease of entry and hey it might look pretty cool.plus all the engine room, hang a couple of hairdryers and watch out.
can we get Jeremy Clarkson to review all roadkill cars (that would be comedy gold)
+Omar camacho Why haven't BBC or MT hired you yet? Best idea I've heard all day.
+MrBrennanCreeper Because they're americans that build junk. Pretty spectacular junk might I add. Stuff that you or me could build. With some exceptions.
+Aaron Davis Of course they build junk, why else would the show be called roadkill? Unfortunately, I can't build cars like that, simply because I lack the funds.
I'm not saying the junk is bad, there's a reason why I build junk too. But if you can't afford it, that's no issue really. Anything can be turned into a go cart... if you think about it.... or maybe I'm just too straya.... stripped out V6 commodore ftw
+Aaron Davis I want a commodore :(

Google doesn't understand me at all. For some reason I keep getting an ad for a Hyundai at a reasonable lease rate. Of course while searching for hacked up Corvette Hoonery, what I'm really thinking is, damn I need a good lease on an Elantra.
Bruh, that 2.4 turbo tho...
(Don't quote me on that lol)
Even then the Optima looks so much better than any of the Hyundais.
Ronald Colman Lol yeah
Ronald Colman ok, why is the topic of Asian cars coming up in the comments of a Roadkill video?
Start at the first comment, I'm watching RK and the ad wants me to lease a Hyundai, I found that humorous. Then Assassinpiggles mentioned the 2.4 turbo engine they offer(which is actually a really good damn engine), which propmpted me to mention that the Optima (same car as hyundai sonata) is a much better looking car at a lower price. Just because I love v8's and other American stuff doesn't mean I should be ignorant about other cars and other brands. Anything with an engine floats my boat just fine.
Where are all the hateful comments about selling out? Where all the people saying they are going to unsub? They are noticeably absent in this episode, compared to the Subaru episode. No one notices or if they do notice, do not care when they get sponsorship from Lingenfelter, Holley, Mast Motorsports, Dickies, or Continental. But if Subaru does it, it is them selling out, a Subaru 'commercial' and people 'unsub'(even though they are full of shit and actually don't). What gives? Money is money, and they use that money, regardless of where it comes from, towards the same purpose, fixing their junk to make it more fun and make an entertaining episode. My thing is, if you wanna cry 'SELLOUTS!!1!' about the Subie episode, you have to be consistent, and have to do it here as well, but, you won't. Why?
For the record, I think none of this sellout crap. I friggin' Love this show, just kinda peeved about all the dick comments in the subie episode from people who don't get it.
Well I guess its because subarus are alot less relevant than upgrade parts for cars that fit into the show.
Maybe most of them unsubbed?
I don't understand the hate. I enjoyed the Subaru episode and have great respect for a big car company that would place their product on a show as REAL as Roadkill. I understand that some screening and editing would have to happen but I think Roadkill did more good for Subaru's reputation than Subaru did damage to Roadkill's Reputation. To me there was no damage, and that episode just went to prove that David and Michael can be professional when they need to be and still be bad asses. How cool is that?
I don't care if they drop names just as long as they keep doing new shows every month.
Hire me..... I'll work for free!!! I love doing what you guys do and would love to do it as a living! How did you guys both first start out? I would love to go to a good school for performance tuning but there's not too many schools for that in Colorado.... too bad because i can tune better than i eat :)

The Mad Maxxis is easily the best thing they've ever built. What a beast.
Seriously, when I get myself a welder and find a cheap Vette, I'm going to do this!! Love the mad max style!!
also, this is such a great car to fix because so few parts and electrical problems and you can track just about anything down from your switch panel!!

Usually when you put the oil cap on, oil won't fly out. :P
Well its roadkill Wat u expect lol
Because a GM PCV costs big money right?
If like $10 is big money.
Flabulo
you cant put oil in where the pcv valve goes though.. pretty sure the valve cover has to have a vent built in under that port.. could fil it there i guess if you want to wait hours...
i never thought i would hear ANYONE say "How do I air condition my butt?"
That's the closest thing to an american Ariel Atom.
No Polaris makes a thing(Slingshot, had to look that up) that I would say is closer to the Atom. This is more like certain stock cars.
Flabulo The one you mentioned looks more like a Three wheeled KTM Crossbow, even the names are alike Slingshot/Crossbow.
There's another car made in the US that looks more like the atom, it's made by Exomotive and called Exocet. It's a heavilly modified MX-5, and looks quite a lot like an Atom, closest I've seen so far.
ArthurAlcantara Ya, you have a point. I think it has a bike engine like the Crossbow and everything. I just can't think of a really good match. Even that Exocet seems more like a Caterham that looks like an Atom if anything.
There sort of is an american ariel atom already. im not sure where its built but you can buy it in the us and they use the supercharged 4cyl from the cobalt ss its on Jay Leno's garage, thats where i saw it anyway.
Flabulo the exocet has the miata engine but you can put an ls in it easily
My dad has an 84 corvetter without an engine and we also got a 350 laying around and i talked to my dad about building one
If you have the opportunity don't hesitate !!!!
cut it up while hes out. then itll have to become a vette cart
Did you end up doing it?
Cool story bro
4 years later and cleetus mc farlane holds the 1/8mile record for stickshift corvettes in a "corvette cart" :D
and B is for build made one for the gambler 500 this year, and I've seen a few more around. You FOR SURE started a trend :)
Quit distracting me, Roadkill! I'm trying to write. And, when do I get to hot-lap that thing?

+Heswe 240SS or SX?
+Randy Pobst HOLY CRAP!!!!! I'm responding to Randy Pobst!!!!!!!!!!
+Randy Pobst Oh my lord... Hot-lap in the vet cart... GOOD BYE TO ALL TOP LAPS IN THE WORLD!!!
+Gravitycat24 They added lightness. Lower it, please, too.
I'm not a Corvette fan at all. But, this seems like the perfect solution. Now I want to build one.
They should make a video game where you race the roadkill cars.
Or where you make your own...
+Dubbie Gaming They could have junkyards spread out across a massive city, and you start out with a junker and drive around in it with your film crew getting sponsers along the way. The better you entertain your audience, the better parts you get for your car.
+creeperplayes nerf one of the Forza games has the Rotsun, cant remember which game tho
+creeperplayes nerf there's the flatout series ,it doesn't have the roadkill cars but i think you should check it out.Races on dirt roads, city streets, derbys :)

its like mr cleetus mcfarland was watching this episode while building his cart
This is one of my favorite Roadkill episode
I didn't know The Road Warrior was set in California.....
And I much prefer the sound of the VetteKart to the Lingenfelter. It's worth losing a couple of seconds on a lap just for that sound.....
Of course the Vette cart is a good idea, you are removing all the shit (except the aero) from the Vette, and just leaving excellent suspension behind. Perfect track toy
I don't know if I'd call anything engineered in mid 80s-90s "excellent."
Billy And grace Umm what does that have to do with anything?
vezzarn Well it's still a Corvette. Same thing with the 1970's Corvette. It's a shitty engine, but everything else is still Corvette.
GODOFGUITAR2112 whats a shitty engine?
vezzarn you do realize the c4 zr1 suspension was built from f1 racing lol
Now this is the original Leroy
I'm a big corvette lover and absolutely love this
I noticed that David went very quiet during his hot lap in the C7, whereas Mike didn't go quiet on his.

God I wish I could build something like this. Damn Australian car mod laws.
"Damn Australian car mod laws."
You Australian don't know how good you have it..
Nabder Nagor What do you mean? Example?
- POD filters must be in an enclosed box.
- BOV venting to atmosphere is illegal.
- Car must not be lower than 10cm from the ground to the exhaust.
- Wheels may not be 2" bigger than standard.
- Exhaust can't be louder than 74dB
- Gauges aren't allowed on the dash or anywhere above the steering wheel, so yes, gauges on the pillar are illegal.
- If the car is supposed to come with an airbag in the steering wheel, it is illegal to replace the steering wheel with an aftermarket one.
- Not allowed tinted lights.
- Legal window tint is 35%.
- Car cannot have more than 20% more power than stock.
- There are engine capacity regulations. e.g all vehicles originally weighing
more than 1100 kg = Original mass (kg) x 5.0
= maximum legally capacity in cc’s for naturally aspirated. Forced induction, it's x 3.
Say you're supercharging a 2010 Camaro SS. You'd legally have to remove the 6.2L, and install a 5.1L.
EarrGasmm
Compared to the stuff that you guys have (Skylines, insurance, price of cars and mods). Its way more lax in Oz. Hell watching MCM gets me depressed because we can't do half the shit over here.
Nabder Nagor They skip out including the engineering certification junk that has to be completed before you can legally drive the car again, after any major mod.
Same here in germany. I would love to have a car like that, but making that thing street legal here would be hard work.
By far the best thing on roadkill thus far! That thing is awesome!
Dave I'm as blue collar as the next guy but I'd have NO problem being seen in that Vette ;)
This is basically the coolest thing ever, but if they really wanted to do this right they would have needed to install a coil-over kit.
There's nothing wrong with the stock leafs, but the spring rate is way off. The suspension might as well be solid mounted...
There was some kid who made a V8 Civic with C5 rear suspension, and it handled like crap because the spring rate was way off.
I imagine the next chapter will include all around tuning or it might be on the garage show (forget the name).. but yea that's what I was thinking too. I'd work on the suspension before tuning the brakes.
Yeah it would be sick if they did that!
And send it to a sheet metal shop to give it some finish and some aero would be even better!
I've always wanted to do exactly what they did to this. Either to a Fiero of Vette since they have similar space-frame construction. But I'm not sure I could justify it unless other people thought it was really cool too.
I came here to say the same thing. The suspension geometry is going to be way off with the car sitting so high now, and like you mentioned would be stiff as hell. Ah well... I'd still drive the shit out of it.
ChargedTTq I say just a tiny bit of bodywork. Those open sides kinda worry me a bit, and the unprotected radiator is kinda bothersome as well. But other than that, I'd love to have something along those lines in my driveway (even though I live in PA and all that rain and snow would really wreck it).
Sounds like someone learned the term "Spring rate".
give it long range suspension, an ls and a blower, then make a crossover episode with dirt every day
The weight reduction alone increased its ride height and ground clearance at least 2"
I think this comment has aged well.
Vette cart now has long travel suspension, maybe one day there will be a cross over.

The smiles on their faces when to go around the block doesn't lie.
I can't help but wondering if it can be MADE road legal, and if so, what would be required. After all, the Ariel Atom is legal, and it's basically a barely-covered tubular frame.
turn signals, fender like little flaps of steel or better yet aluminum, and she'd be legal, idk about in the land of fruits and nuts but here in indiana it would be anyhow lol
sstroh08 Noise? Secured gas tank? Or are those not relevant?
in murica it would need turn signals, and mabey fenders I am a little shady about that part and a fire wall
***** everything i own is mufflerless, as long as you dont go around through town at 2am revving the hell out of your engine nobody will bother you, how exactly is the fuel cell not secure now??
sstroh08 really? well then I shall edit my post to remove mufflers
It's sad someone would abandon a corvette In a desert, imagine a newer corvette abandoned in the desert
Wish you would bring this back, throw in some extended a arms and off road tires, maybe a front diff, and do some Baja runs (bigger engine since I'm dreaming)
Awesome car look, amazing engine sound. I'm in love.
Boggers on the C4 Corvette thumbs up if you would love to see it to
They should lift this thing and put big off-road tires on it and turn it into a dune buggy. That would be awesome.
I love all of the laws openly broken... Keep it going, guys!
"You put a speeeeeeeeeeeeel on meeeee!!" EVERY. SINGLE. ROADKILL.
if you but some dragtyres on the thing it whould do wheelis
I can't wait for the day when I have a spare engine just sitting around...
Guys it would be so awesome if you did an episode with this epic machine where you really dial in the little details and maybe engine swap for more horse power that would be awesome i think. keep up all the epic stuff you get up to i love every episode!!!!
I have got to do that in the future! That looks like so much fun!!
You smell gas? .............what?......yea
That Highway Scene is genuinely some of the funniest stuff I ever saw on CZcams
strip a corvette to the chassis and it weighs... as much as a honda civic does fully loaded. lol
Patrick Doolittle p.s. aerodynamics
Patrick Doolittle Civics are around 2700lbs not 2100they sure as hell don't make 350 horsepower either.
PC Master Race civic ef hatch weighs like 2300 and that number was said here or something like that
PC Master Race stripped crx weighs like 1700 and there are plenty with 350+ hp
And they also made 100 about horsepower.
Also doesn't have 100lb roll cage around it.
Sometimes I forget that you guys can do anything!!!
The way you rolled away the stock tire to revele the new one was brillant
jealousy is an understatement...
