Thanks a lot for this. I'm not very creative with this program so I used this as my midterm project.

The light saber is exactly the same in the animation as what was created in the tutorial. The characters are just 3ds max bipeds and they were animated using motion capture data

Alas, the one question I had was not answered.
The problem I have with the lightsaber glow is that it does not stay the same size relative to the blade. So the further the saber moves from the camera, the smaller the blade gets...but the glow doesn't get smaller at all.
I have yet to find a solution to that one.

Is it possible to have something light up for only a brief moment in animation? I'm animating a Star Trek ship going to Warpspeed, but I need the warp nacelles to light up for the last frames.

My lightsaber comes out far too ghostly (blue one) How do I make the color engulf the lightsabers blade like you did? All the options seem to be similiar. My Blade/White stick in the middle is still visible.

So not that it matters to me very much, but when I hit ctrl + I, for inverting the selection, nothing happens.
    Edit: I am using 3ds max 2014

Great tutorial, but it didn't help me in the end. I need the actual object to produce the lights. Point lights and omni lights won't work.
I'm creating a river of lava, and I need the lava river object to cast its own light. When I use omni lights you get unnatural concentrations of light around each light source. :/

I followed your instructions to the dot and still when I render my object refuses to glow. Tried making a glow object in a new workspace and still nothing, I've assigned the correct material ID's so I just don't understand. :'(

Never mind I just worked it out. Forgot to tick the little box next to 'Material ID' in environment and effects, derp. Great video by the way, real informative. :D
