  • This balloon-like device is surgically placed in between the humeral head and the acromion bone of the shoulder subacromial space. It acts as a spacer or in other words it pushes the humeral head down. By pushing the humeral head down the length of the deltoid muscle of the outer shoulder is reestablished allowing it to function again. In essence this balloon will change the mechanics of the damaged shoulder so that movement of the arm does not rely on the damaged rotator cuff tendon but rather on the better positioned deltoid muscle.
After insertion and recovery patients have a better chance of being able to raise their arm again by using the deltoid rather than the absent rotator cuff tendon. Patient will still have to go through physical therapy program to retrain the deltoid muscle.
Alternative options for irreparable rotator cuff tears are much more invasive and include superior capsular reconstruction as well as reverse shoulder replacement.
The Striker InSpace balloon is relatively easy to insert and the potential complications are relatively low.
