      Many people have asked that over the years but they just have no need to make the zippo better, the same design has been around since 1932 with only minor changes I would love to see the classic zippo design stay the same BUT I wish they had a factory version similar to this with a sealed bottom of the insert and a fill area with a screw and o-ring to keep it sealed maybe sold as a special version or something they can make a KILLING if they did that even if they were $50 each they would sell...Even at $100 each plenty of collectors and some users would still buy one, haha

      cutlerylover I would buy one just for the functionality. I am by no means a collector of zippos(I have a handful), but I personally prefer them over other lighters. Whether it’s the heritage, the ability to service them, or just the sound I love it! Hell, I’m not even a smoker besides the one or two cigars a month.

    Two things:
    You're WAY overfilling your Zippo. You need to stop before you see saturation in the cotton. If you do this and have it in your pocket, it will leak and leave you with a rash on your leg.
    I would guess you're supposed to remove the felt pad at the bottom and replace it with the gasket. By packing it on top of the felt, you're squeezing the cotton below and essentially wringing it out, making the lighter hold less fluid.

      There was a guy who used old used bicycle intertubes for this to make a tight seal around the entire case when not in use. Im guessing the bottom plate leaks a bit due to the door it needed a screw in plug and as for sealing the whole thing well they aint like the peanut lighters and so they actually need an airproof case to fit around them ideally

      @@edi9892 yep your right thats why alot of peanut lighters encapsulate the entire thing air tight. Due the tiny bit they can hold is what they intend to keep till ya use it. you can get sevral short burns out of one fill however its not an ideal lighter for most people. Its an emergency lighter that works in cold conditions where a bic won't work without a few tricks to heat it up due to the nature of liquid butane speaking of encapsulated lighters they got a forever match that works on the same idea . zippo is cool for those who use a lighter alot tough some people dont like the fuel taste everything has its highs and lows a propper sized elastic band around the seam of the zippo is the best your gona do for a classic Zippo unless you do the butane retrofit

At the time i was just getting into collecting, and i have an okay collection now. mainly of rare numbered ones. but the zippo i used this in was my grandads harley zippo, i believe from the 70s, i cant quite remember. This is because it was stolen along with the insert. My grandad now has dementia, and can just about remember me, but i always make sure to bring zippos to show him. and i was wondering if you still had the plasmatic insert, and if youd be willing to sell it as he always found it interesting, and he was the first person i showed it to too. so im hoping it might spark some memory, alike the zippos do.

    I had to buy a pack of these 3 gaskets which has Zorro cotton + wick + 30 flints bundled (I something just like to make this spark for stress relieve- light or spark or fire is soothing).

In fact they could just remove that flint hole since you can already put flint in the cotton. But the price is certainly right, you get a few for around $6 or more.

    Though it's a neat idea, I don't have high hopes for it. It may reduce the rate at which the fluid evaporates by sealing up the bottom, but the fluid will still evaporate through the wick. In fact, I'd say most lf the evaporation happens through the wick. The fuel might last longer, but I'm not counting on the difference being large enough to be worth the purchase.

    I use a Zippo daily and it works well for it's intended purpose. Evaporation is a issue for those that don't actually smoke. Granted the Zippo is a high maintenance device needing refueling every other day, wick pulled about 2 weeks and wick replaced 1.5 months. Lighting requires an up/down motion because of the nature of fuel/gas.
    A plug/gasket will lessen the flame to the point of not being wind proof. More complication makes for more issues down the road. Simply put the Zippo is a good lighter for it's intended purpose.

    Is plastic piece a replacement for top felt pad, or added too felt pad as you did? Resulting in tight fit. Maybe exact fit replacing pad rather than adding too it?

    Definitely let us know if it works. I really wanna carry a zippo with my edc. If the gasket doesn’t work then I may try that Thunderbird insert. Have you reviewed the Thunderbird insert?

      He has some older videos on them I believe. The fuel in those lasts indefinitely and i think is a much-needed upgrade. My Zippo keeps fuel for months until it runs out from me playing with it, haha.

      I don't have Thunderbird brand but I use a double jet in an Armor series case for edc and its been excellent. They don't always fit perfectly depending on brand and quality but they're reliable and don't run out
      I got a monogrammed slim series at my best friends wedding and I'd kill for a gasket or an insert for it

    Gotta zippo. Haven't had any problems. Thought about getting the gasket. But I mean it's gunna evaporate, the fuel isn't expensive, and my lighter always clicks over for me. It seems like a nice idea, but I feel zippo did a great job as is.

    Hey, your cotton top piece seems like it sits lower than all my zippos. Should I take the cloth piece you usually lift to fill OFF before adding this? Seems like that would help you refuel easier with this plastic piece in, too.

    I always carry my Zippo but hate that the evaporating naphtha irritated my skin and had to refill after a couple of weeks. I bought a Butane insert for the Zippo case and now can carry it for months with no irritation and no loss of fuel. The butane insert always lights.

  • @827stormin
    @827stormin Před rokem

    Just got mine today.
    Haven't had time to see fuel consumption comparison.
    However, did find that in a Zippo insert, it's a tight fit. It will fit in a Japan Continental/LDL model, not as tight of fit due to more rounded style but will seal enough to keep fluid from going to the bottom of the case. For those with that question.

    Not bad, but better create a gasket for the parts above. Much fuel seems imho evaporate over the wick anyways so the lid is more important but of course much more difficult.
    Still a nice idea though, especially the flint storage.

  • @NobodyWhatsoever
    @NobodyWhatsoever Před 5 lety +4

    I think it may slow the evaporation of the fuel, but the wick still allows vapors to escape. However, it may very well be an improvement!

    • @harviecz
      @harviecz Před 2 lety +3

      Most of the fuel is lost through the wick anyway. Bottom is actualy sealed quite well as it is, you even hear the "pop" when you pull it out. So i call BS, this gadget will not help at all.

    • @harviecz
      @harviecz Před 2 lety

      I've once wrapped the zippo with electrical tape around the hinge and seam where it opens. and i was able to light it after several months when i unwrapped it. But most of the fuel was gone anyway. I beleive if you can find zippo-style lighter which has screw-on cap with o-ring, it will work for much longer time, but it will be awkward to use.

    • @fyretnt
      @fyretnt Před rokem

      @@harviecz older zippos don’t have that *pop* as they are worn down, so they’d leak more from the bottom than a brand new one

  • @anrew4425
    @anrew4425 Před 5 lety

    Helps but minimally, i have those old ronson lighters which are like to wick out fuel too quickly and can catch the whole lighter on fire. Im guessing being sealed creates pressure which can make it wick out too quickly.
    But the fuel still evaporates out the wick mine have gasketed screws on the fill ports so only one way to evaporate

      Cut a piece of bicycle inner tube and place it over the outside of the Zippo. Roll the inner tube down when you need to use the lighter. Roll it back up when you are done. Mine keeps the fluid for about a month that way. (Even out here in the dry higher altitude of the Rocky Mountain States.)

    • @TonyMontanaOG
      @TonyMontanaOG Před 4 lety +5

      Eric White you’re an idiot. Other gases don’t work the same as the liquid fuel does.
      At altitude or in freezing temperatures propane and butane stop working.
      Zippos and MSR gas stoves are the only sources of fuel that are used on Mount Everest summits.
