- Beginners Guide - How To Use - Unboxing
In this video I unbox a new Zippo Lighter. I also show you how to prepare your lighter properly before your first use.
Learn how to:
- Prepare the wick
- Unpack and repack the rayon (cotton) balls
- Replace the wick
- Replace the flint and store spare
- Fill with lighter fluid (fuel)
Do I need zippo lighter?: NO

@@ArnoldPearce you don't need zippo fluid. It works with any. I use Ronsonol, it's cheaper then zippo fluid.

Hey lad do you have a us link for this pack?
I don’t smoke or anything, but I’ve always been fascinated with zippo lighters. Unlike typical lighters you can buy at gas stations, you don’t have to hold down the wheel for maintain a consistent flame; instead, with a zippo, you flick it and you get a steady flame and when you’re done all you have to do is close the lid.
Same. I don‘t intend to ever smoke and never smoked in my life but I‘m still very obsessed with this style of lighters.
The only downside is the all fuel evaporate in about a week or two
Here's a fun idea, learn how to solder and use heat wraps on wires so you have an excuse to buy a Zippo lol

I've never did this to any of my Zippo Lighters, I'm 45. My dad always had Zippo Lighters and never did he ever do this either.

Alice Moreau pretty sure they have zippos at walmart
In the check out lines they’ve got them on the racks on the sides with the candy lol, so that’s probably what they’re talking about.
I'm going to Walmart today and possibly buy a zippo if they have one for a good price
Ok for everyone who thinks or thought this was wicked complicated it’s not, you don’t have to pull the cotton out of the lighter and rearrange the wick or move the flint when you first get it. All you need to do is add you’re fuel like he showed and your all set 👍
I was wondering about this. He didn’t explain why the need to repack, and it looked pretty much the same to me before and after 🙂. Thanks.
Thank you for this reply, I just posted this exact question and then I saw your reply so thank you for that!!
@@MasterKoala777 You need to Repack because the wick will get MUCH better fuel supply if its rearranged like shown in the video.
If its half on the side and half on the cotton you will see yourself filling up your zippo much more often because it will always run dry.
Actually he explained this ;)
So open it, rearrange and have fun!
@@Fosten12 I appreciate this info, thanks! 😊
Prepping the wick isn't necessary for the lighter to work. But, properly prepping the lighter will allow it to work more efficiently.

I found an old Zippo lighter of my grandfather's but it wasn't working so I got supplies from Amazon to fix it. When they came in today I found your video and followed along while assembling it. To my delight it works just like new. Thanks!
You should have sent that old lighter to ZIPPO! They fix them as good as new and it does not cost you a penny. Not even postage! They supply you a prepaid padded envelope AND sent me a cool key chain with a penny built into it. My dad lost his Zippo when he was smoking inside the bathroom stall at the park. He didn't want to pick it up.
Good choice
Did you know that the little hole you used to lift the felt on the bottom of the zippo is actually meant for a spare flint? Instead of just sticking it between the felt and rayon balls it goes into the felt directly so it doesnt move
genius!
the little hole is actually to refuel the lighter, put the little white tip in from the fuel can and squeeze till you see fuel
@@sc9698 im not too sure on that. 90% of my zippos have the words "lift to fill" printed on the felt pad, meaning do not fill through the felt
I thought the hole was there to lift up the felt
Thank you for the tip
You are correct about the non-zippo flints dissolving when stored inside a Zippo. I learned a valuable lesson , use authentic Zippo products only!
I don’t need a Zippo or any other lighter as I don’t smoke however, I suppose it could come in handy at some point in time. The thing is, I liked this video so much I’m now wanting a Zippo! How crazy is that? I must admit, the plain Zippo’s look nicer than the sometimes over decorated types. Great review by the way. Nice and clear. So many people hide the instrument with their fingers or tools when demonstrating something, you no. Brilliant.
Greetings from Cumbria in the U.K.
Stay safe and well.
I bought a zippo style lighter recently but it didn't light up so I thought it was broke, but apparently I just need to put some fuel in it. Great video, these lighter are more complex than I initially thought.
Once you get them set up they work great
I am a little disappointed that I purchased a lighter to finish wrapping a present... just to find out I have to go back to the store again tomorrow to get fluid or another lighter...
I'm 61 years old, don't smoke anymore, however I still have and have owned many zippy lighters ( also knockoff versions) they are the best for what they are. Getting to my point is you can overfill your lighter and not find out until it's too late. That slow and intensifying warmth to burning feeling on your thigh. To avoid this and still get maximum fill will be learned fairly soon, edged on by the consequences of overfill . The best way to test for slight overfill is to, close lighter grip with thumb bottom index finger top, using thumb and index finger of other hand, rapidly rubb in circular motion at the seem between lid and base for a fair amount of time to worm up the metal. If you detect any fluid you are overfilled. If it is just a slight smear you can usually burn off the excess by lighting lighter for a minute or so, anything more than that requires extended usage before putting in your pocket or more creative measures to reduce fluid volume. Time and experience are great teachers.
Note: I know for a fact that fluids are different from what they used to be ( zippo fluid for tennis ball cannons. Ronson fluid not so good because of inhibitors) none work the same as they used to. Hope this helps someone.
my dad used to own this when i was kid and i remember when he's doing the maintenance on his zippo lighter... brings back memories
I bought a brass zippo back in 1992 and still use it today. The wick causes me no end of trouble though whilst trying to fit a new one.
Put a little bit of tape on the tip or glue then cut it when you get it through or remove tape

Ok I'll allow it

I agree, I flick my zippo open and pop it open all the time. They say that it wears the hinge out, but I’ve had mine for like a decade now and it’s still fine. Unless you straight up throw it around and slam it on shit I think they’re good, pretty resilient objects.
I actually just bought my very first Zippo a week ago. Always wanted one. I don't smoke or anything but come on. Zippo are just this iconic classic lighter. And I also bought a gerber dime multi tool just to use on the Zippo. Thank you for showing this newbie hows it's done!

I use my zippo for hiking. Fill em up with the same fuel as my portable stove, and when out of fuel useful for spark making.
I use it for any purpose. It's fire on the go and that's the point of it, you don't have to be a smoker.
It really does help your lighter fluid last much longer to re pack the cotton and wick. I used to have to top off almost daily. Now I fill up about once a week. I don’t lift the felt flap when I fill... I just poke the fluid nozzle through through the hole and gently squeeze till it starts dripping out of the bottom.
“Uuuh my smoking material” 😂
i can still remember the night sitting on a chair in the balcony at around 4am in the morning covering myself up with a blanket kind of thing, it was brutally raining outside with thunderstorm. you know how beautiful rain looks in village area. in the background a beautiful song name "i hold you" was playing slowly and i lighted up my cigarette with the zippo then left it open as im playing with it, a nice burning smell was coming through the fire after some time bugs are started to coming at the fire and getting themselves brunt and i was watching the whole scenario. how beautiful the mother nature is.
Thank you for the story.

i been a zippo guy for a grip now and i learned so much from this vid. especially the use of the arm! that’s so inventive!!

One important point missed in the video that zippo gets dried out within a week or two if left unused. That's the only negative point about zippo.
but if use bicykle innertube top of zippo not leak and lost fuel. and have waterproof if you drop to lake.
Thanks bro I just popped mine fresh out the box and started striking thinking wtf lol thanks for this awesome video
pro-tip: you can take the flint out of clippers by undoing the white screw at the bottom of the removable flint holder thing and taking out the flint and putting it in your zippo. It works with other lighters too but it's easier to get them out of clippers. the flint sometimes goes flying away when you try to take it out of a regular 'crack lighter'.
My first ever new Zippo arrived this morning...I had your video running on the iphone as i prepped the zippo on my workbench....it went like a dream and my new zippo works perfectly...Thank you so much...an excellent instructional video.
That is awesome!
Regular Zippos leak vapour from the hinges so Its always a good idea to store a zippo wrapped in a small plastic bag. This stops vapour evaporation. A zippo will normally last a few days without wrapping but if you wrap in a plastic bag it can last over a month.
Yea man. I came here to leave a comment but read a couple and I, like several others, know how to do this and I also have no use for a Zippo lighter but I still watched this video from start to end. For some reason you have the ability to keep peoples attention. Now I really think you like the multi tool more than the Zippo lighter. I love my multi tool also. I do keep it in my pocket and I use it all of the time.

I just ordered my first zippo lighter after a year of wanting one because there just so cool
I used to "collect" these in college and use them for smoke (I only have 8 because they are expensive in my country) and even found one of my grand uncle, a model from the 70's according to the code below. These are pretty good lighters with the BIG failure of the fuel liquid. You have to fill these things every week even if you don't use it because it evaporates. Even if you don't smoke (I personally quit it two years ago) they are good for some sick tricks or even just to show of.
That being said, no matter if it's venting, the Zippo will always light on and will survive almost anything.
Thank you bro. Merry Christmas!
