    Man, I always felt that my smittybilt compressor took forever. I'm glad I came across this mod.

  • @salcigar
    @salcigar Před 2 lety +2

    I think you did a great job with this mod. I didn't read all the comments and maybe some else already suggested this. A check valve on your leader hose will extend the life of your compressor in two ways. The compressor won't have the back pressure from the tires pushing back on it making it work less hard each time you stop to check your tire PSI. Second it is possible for air to leak back through the compressor deflating the system while you pause to check tire pressure. Because you don't have a pressure switch DO NOT turn on the compressor until everything is connected, the air has no place to go and you risk damaging the compressor.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  Před 2 lety

      Great info. Thank you. I’ll definitely look into adding a check valve. Much appreciated!!!

      Are the check valve and pressure switch the same thing?

  • @mikeanderson6219
    @mikeanderson6219 Před 2 lety +2

    I did a similar mod and added some others. I added a pressure switch too. One thing I did too was add a 10ga SAE connector to my front bumper and converted the aligator clips so I don't have to open the hood every time.

    I LOVE my MORRflate. Definitely one of my favorite purchases. Most of these compressors are way more capable than the single hoses they come with, so using a multi-tire system really makes the most of the compressor. One recommendation I have is to do yourself a HUGE favor and buy the MORRflate dust caps. When you're airing up at trailheads it's impossible to keep those chucks clean and soon they become very hard to use. They aren't too hard to clean, but you don't want to try and do it on the trail.

    A more accurate timed experiment comparison has to include all the unpacking, setup, teardown and repacking the equipment as well as the time required to actually put air into the tires. It's the time you spend messing with it from beginning to end and you are back on the hard top (going from the driver's seat to back into the driver's seat with all 4 tires adjusted)

    This was so extremely helpful. I just built my own 4 way air hose system and I’ve been trying to decide what pump to use that will work with my 4 way system well and this video answered that question perfectly.

  • @stevemarlatt

    The similar-looking Vevor is now priced at $76.99 on their website vs. $203.99 for the Smittybuilt, making the Smittybuilt 2.6 times more expensive. I have been using the Vevor compressor for several months and it has been working great. Would be nice to see you do a side-by-side comparison.
    I followed your lead and made the same modifications to connect it to my four-tire inflator and deflator system. Definitely the way to go.

    I love our portable compressors as opposed to on board air. It's specifically for airing tires so I figure why use up space for all this on board stuff. Especially when some vehicles are space limited. Rather use that space for dual batteries or something. But the main reason ... I can take it in the house. So if someone takes my Jeep ... all my stuff is still mine. I just find them convenient, myself. But like you said ... easy to wander it over and help someone else out. Everyone has their own now, at our house.

    If hoses are to tight to get them over fittings, just grap an electric kettle and dip just the first 3/4 of an inch in the boiling water.
    Now you can attach the hose with ease.

    I swapped the connections on my smittybilt about 2 yrs ago , including the fill hose swapped to one from lowes. Works much better but not as good as that Morrflate setup. Now I have to consider the 4 tire setup !
    I would be interested to see how the new compressor matches up with the smittybilt. .

    At 6:10 your hose coupler shown will probably damage a few compressors if people follow that advice. As I recall, the Smittybilt instructions warn against running the compressor without relieving the pressure. The female coupler shown at 6:10 will work on an air accumulator tank where the compressor shuts off when it reaches a certain amount of pressure. Turning the compressor on as shown at 6:10 will result in the compressor immediately achieve maximum pressure and the pressure release valve will repeatedly pop.

    • @CantonBn

      Exactly correct. I like Adventure Build's videos in general. But the type of compressor the smitty and its clones are will be damaged by this direct unrelieved connection can easily destroy this type of compressor

    I modded my Viair to inflate two tires and once by adding a T in the hose and swapping to clamp on valve fittings. It didn't cut my time in half but it only cost about $20. When the Viair finally dies I will go with the Smittybilt compressor.

  • @mpcp27
    @mpcp27 Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you for that comparison..I often wondered which was faster the 4 tire vs the single tire.. but nobody ever included the time to unravel and connect the 4 hose system within the inflation time. That is pretty impressive... Almost a 5 minute differential... That dessert armor compressor is really a beast.. Twice the CFM compared to the Smitty 2781. Summit racing has a similar one for about $180 and Napa has one for about $114.. Unfortunately they seem to be sold out. The advantage of the desert armor one is it has the pressure switch already built in..

    I have a 4 hose system and now need to get a compressor. Long term, would you still say this smittybuilt is the way to go? Or are there better options now? Which would you go wtih if you were buying one today? I know they have bigger CFM compressors now, but storage space is also a premium. So for me, its a size vs speed balance.

    I went co2 and haven’t looked back. People love it. Just the quietness of it makes it worth it, but it’s also insanely quick. I never realized how fatiguing the noise was until it was gone.
    .
    People love to brag about their maxitrac compressor. It’s nowhere near as fast. Just did a Baja trip where I deployed my tank after a maxitrac just started filling a tire, I filled all of mine from 20 to 35psig, put it all back, and he just started on his 3rd tire.
    .
    Not much will compete with a 500-700 psig tank regulated down to 200psig. I have the larger HF unit under my seat in case I ran out of co2.
    .
    We were at a camp site one night and I was topping every rig off because their compressors were too loud to run and we left early.

    Great video!! I'm going to get this exact set up now.
    Question: When the system is completely connected, are you supposed to open the valve and then turn on the compressor or turn on the compressor and then open the valve? Will it create back pressure if the valve is closed? I don't believe the smittybilts have an auto shut off for pressure like other compressors do. Thanks for the help.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I personally like to turn on the compressor and then quickly open the valve when starting. Then when I want to check the pressure I close the valve and turn of the compressor. It’s really easy to do since it’s all right at the front of the rig. Glad I could help.

    A good idea would be to use the universal female fitting so you can use either an automotive or a I/M fitting if you ever need to use any endpiece other than your own or you are airing up a tank or whatever for someone else. I have the same compressor marketed by HF and it works great. Are there better ones? Sure but at multiple times the cost. I like thet I can take this compressor for the trail, but leave it at home during the week.

    One way to help you know when your CO2 tank may be getting close to empty is to weigh it when it’s full, when it’s empty and even after your avg re-inflation of your tires. This way you know about how much you have and how much you likely need before your next trip.
    I also have a cheap compressor I take on the trips when I’m near the end of my tank.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  Před 2 lety +1

      The smittybilt compresor does just as good a job as an arb compressor and the 8 minutes time is just what you see in the video. It doesn’t include pulling everything out from storage. Just the time it takes to open the Morrflate, make all the connections and turn the compressor on and air up to 40psi.
