"There must be some way out of here..." Or is there? "All Along the Watchtower" NYC, Nov. 13, 2002

  • Another video from Madison Square Garden in New York City, November 13, 2002, showcasing the "Three Musketeers" on guitars: Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, and Larry Campbell. With an occasional pop-in by Tony "D'Artagnan" Garnier.
Or given the song they're playing, perhaps they are closer to the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse."
In any case, together with the unseen aid of drummer George Recile, Dylan and his band cook up a powerfully howling version of "All Along the Watchtower," punctuated by Bob's enthusiastic vocal performance including an especially dramatic ending, which as the second encore would have ended the show if Bob and the band had not returned to the stage after that for one more special extra encore, to honor George Harrison,
All in all, it was a great show.
As video, I could have done with a bit less of Sexton blocking Bob Dylan while looking and grinning at someone on his right it seems, but this happens less and less as time goes on. One can hardly blame Sexton, anyway. After all, he probably had no idea he was getting in the way between Dylan and the camera.
This is the second 4K upgraded video from this show, following "Blowin' in the Wind" which debuted a couple of days earlier. There are quite a few more to come.

I adore when he encores the first stanza of a song at the end. My favorite is that live version of romance in Durango where he ends with “dust on my face and my cape.”

Thank you, Targarosko. I’m sorry if you were misled into getting your hopes up! made some kind of careless error at some point in the technical process and ended up with over 2 hours of empty space after the clip. 🙄😐. I’ve trimmed it since but it takes hours for CZcams to process the change!
I will slowly post more of this concert. I think more people like watching individual clips than whole shows, especially if there are interruptions that go on for a while or unwatchable parts. So I prefer working on individual songs at a time. I also like to pay individual attention to each clip - making various adjustments to improve the quality of the raw footage. It would take me SO long to do a whole concert all at once with that kind of attention to detail. It would be months between new uploads!
It also takes a LONG time just to upload the clips to CZcams - especially at high resolutions like 4K. It can take hours for one song. It would take days of tying up most of my internet bandwidth to upload a whole show.
I also have a lot of different shows to work through, and I start getting a little tired of working on the same one after a while, because I get curious to see what I have from others. And a little tired of looking at the same camera angles, lighting, etc, after working on a few songs from the same show in a row. I like mixing them up a bit for variety.
Most of my footage I’ve never even seen before. After most shows I used to just make sure a tape had recorded, then popped it out, labeled it, and put it on the shelf. There are only a few I ever really sat and watched through - usually only if we had people visiting after a show or we were on the road with other fans.
And even most footage I did watch at the time I don’t remember very well.
So it’s fun for me to skip around some and go through a variety of shows from different years, pulling out performances to work on.
But maybe some day when more of the work’s completed I’ll put up some longer segments or full shows - maybe by connecting a bunch of the individual clips back together.
I just started on this project in earnest less than a year ago, so I’m still learning more all the time about working with the footage and soundtracks and figuring out different approaches to sharing it.
Feel free any time to tell me if you have any suggestions or requests. I can’t promise, but I do enjoy making people happy when I can 😁

Once in a while someone asks why I don’t post whole concerts and I’ve thought about the pros and cons of each approach, so I wasn’t sure if you were suggesting.

@@ironcurtainsteve I wanted to give this performance a good listen before replying again. I didn’t mean to just toss off your comment with a flip remark.
Obviously the same thing can strike people very differently. I didn’t recall Dylan’s singing sounding all perfuctory any of the several times I listened to this, and listening closely just now, I still don’t.
The rhythm of his vocals differs quite a bot from some other versions, being more like an alternating call-and -response with the lead guitar, rather than standing atop the music. But to me, anyway, he sounds like he’s singing with plenty of inflection, feeling, and intention as far as conveying meaning. The way he handles the lyrics, to my ears, works very well with the ominous instrumental to convey a strong sense of foreboding, which is a big part of what the song seems to be about.
I’m not trying to argue with your perception. I guess it just strikes you differently. I have to say I don’t see why it feels that way to you, but you might just as easily say the same about my feeling about the rendition.
      - [x] I am a little curious whether you’ve ever seen Dylan live. It may not be your situation, but I have encountered more than a few people who don’t like it at all when Dylan’s live versions of songs differ greatly from album versionsthey’re familiar with

@@ArturArtist i've seen him live in concert and my experience depends on how tight & rockin the band is. because like mccartney, he can't sing very well anymore and so the experience is one of honoring the legacy and not the quality of voice. and so upon watching this again i feel the band is not that swingin and that they're only playing this song because it's a familiar favorite. i think his newer records are great & well-produced.

    • @ArturArtist
      @ArturArtist  Před 2 lety +1

@@ironcurtainsteve I guess this just really goes to show how tastes differ. I agree with a lot of other people that this band with Larry Cambell, Charlie Sexton and Tony Garnier is the best he’s had since the constant touring started in 1988. And they were especially “on” at this show.
As far as Dylan’s voice, it’s never been a great instrument in any technical sense. But what he does with it anyway is amazing. The sound of his voice is what actually first grabbed my attention- when I was 14 in 1971 and heard him sing the first 2 lines of the first song on the album. For me, he has an amazing ability to pack more feeling, thought, and intention into every syllable than any other singer I’ e ever heard.
I guess I was least fond of his voice on Another Side of Bob Dylan, and then later when he was really in a shambles around 1990-91, as well as around the time of Tempest, because of the sound of all that junk on his vocal chords, or whatever was making it impossible for him to sound ok.
I thought his singing was GREAT though, the one show I saw in 2019 and the 4 I saw last November. Different from earlier, but he was using what he has so well - singing with a lot of delicacy and detail and more firmly in full command of his performances - and more comfortable onstage - than I’ve ever seen him before.
While the band was overall adequate, but hardly exciting.
