This song used to make people feel like monkeying around. My 8 year old brother once sang this song over and over again on a 400 mile car trip in 1971 when we were all little kids. He went overboard on it. 5 kids, 1 adult , 400 miles and no end to "Put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning. DOCTOR! Is there nothing I can take? I said DOCTOR!" RIP, Mark. I miss you!

"Coconut" is a song written and first recorded by Harry Nilsson.
The third single from his 1971 album, Nilsson Schmilsson, it reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and it features three distinct characters (the narrator, the sister, and the doctor), all sung in different voices by Nilsson. The song is perhaps best remembered for its chorus lyric, "She put the lime in the coconut, she drank 'em both up." There are no chord changes; the only chord in the song is an arpeggiated C-7th."

I've been listening to this song for 40 years now! And I remember it being a music video on HBO ages ago. (before VH-1 and MTV hit the airwaves) I know Harry did all the voices on this song, he had an amazing vocal range, and he is sorely missed by his many fans. I also seem to recall a blurb on HBO that Paul McCartney was on the piano for the video but nothing about the "drummer". It wouldn't surprise me if it was Ringo, lol.

After my excursion to the South Pacific and my studies of Coconut cracking, originally I thought (as many other thought) that the words in the Harry Nilsson song said "Put the lime in the Coconut and drink them both up", meaning coconut and lime", which I always thought was a goofy combo. Actually it is "Put the line in the Coconut and drink them both up, meaning the 2 halves of the coconut" which is what what happens when you whack a coconut. I am so proud to share this revelation with the civilized world and save humanity from utter chaos and to share this knowledge as a public service, however, as mentioned previously in my beachaholic response, all donation will be graciously accepted.

This is actually entirely UNTRUE. The lyrics ARE actually, "Put the LIME in the Coconut", as in the tart fruit LIME. The green version of a LEMON. If you actually understood the lyrics, it starts like this"
      Brother bought a coconut
He bought it for a dime.
      His sister had another
She paid it for the lime.
She put the lime in the coconut
      she drank them both up.
So per the actual LYRICS, the brother bought a coconut for a dime. His sister had another dime, and she chose to spend it on a LIME. Then the sister put the LIME that she bought together with the coconut, and "drank them both up".
The song has nothing to do with any LINES. The official song lyrics is LIME.......
Furthermore, in my own excursions to the South Atlantic Caribbean and Grenadine islands, the only techniques I've seen in cracking open coconuts were all done the same: they used a sturdy knife with a sharp point, an ice pick - I've even seen a long drill bit used - a coconut consists of three (3) parts, which you can tell by looking at a whole coconut and see the indented creased lines between the parts that run from end to end. At one end of the coconut, there are three "eyes" - one for each part - that are softer material than the rest of the coconut shell.
Use the sharp-pointed knife or object to penetrate at least two of the 3 eyes into the coconut, and twist to widen out the "eye" a bit (hence I guess why the use of the drill bit), and then drain the water from inside the coconut into a glass or bowl. The two holes will allow for air to get inside the coconut and allow the water to drain quicker, than just making one hole.
Once the coconut has been completely drained of water, simply take a hard-edged metal object - I've seen hatchets, meat cleavers, a thick 1-foot long metal tool file, machetes, etc. used - use the non-cutting edge of the blade. You need some weight behind the tool, and it helps for the tool edge to have SOME sharpness to it, but it doesn't need to be the cutting edge. This is also important because I've seen folks hold the coconut in their hands while they crack it open, and they wouldn't want to accidentally cut their hands or fingers. Then just whack the coconut along the mid-side of the nut - like where you hit the side of an egg against a hard surface to crack open the egg - and you may need to do this 2-3 times, but the shell will crack open.
SO - all the techniques I've seen in cracking open a coconut - and they were all quite similar, just the tools used varied - never really bothered with either making "lines" on the coconut, or using the naturally-made "lines" of the three parts of the shell. They cracked the shell perpendicular to how the lines went, and just were hit at the mid-point of the shell. So AGAIN, any "lines" had little to no relevance in cracking open coconuts in my experiences. Actually it was "holes" that played a bigger relevance than "lines"......
