  • Had the Tout Terrain Scramblers with Pinion gearbox and Gates belt drive now for a couple of months and some viewers had some questions.
    Are Tout Terrain able to do bespoke frames?
    How do you change a wheel with a belt?
    How do you buy a Tout Terrain in the UK?
    Etc etc

      Got some on our tandem and I have had them in other bikes. I prefer flat bars with bar ends. It is different for everyone

    That looks like the same bike as the Priority 600, but with drop bars. I was looking at Tout Terrain bikes, but I may go with the US version of the bike.

      Depends we’re you live and ease of access. I think the Priority 600 is Aluminium where the Tout Terrain is steel. So people their own preference over what material they prefer. I did speak with Priority and the 600 might be a bit heavier. But speak to them and see what you think. They do seem a very good, helpful company from what I have heard

    Hi and thanks for your helpful videos. i have the following naive newbie ignorant question and would love to get educated: since you already had the outback bike that is an all-terrain mountain-bike type bike, what is the reason for you to also get their scrambler gravel bike? i am wondering about the pros&cons of one (outback) vs the other scrambler type. can you please educate me?

    • @RidingBicycles
      @RidingBicycles  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, the Outback is a mountain bike that has 130mm of front suspension so would tackle some steep technical downhill because it also has a relatively slack modern geometry. The Scrambler has more road geometry, this makes it quicker on the roads but I would not want to off road downhills that the Outback could tackle on it. As the Outback has geometry for off road riding I would not want to do a 20 mile road ride on it. That coupled with the fact the outback can take up to 3” wide tyres and the Scrambler about 47mm means they are designed for two very different jobs. It you put 700c tyres on the Scrambler you have a very capable road bike, with 47mm tyres you have a bike that can take moderate off road duties. Put some panniers on and you have a good touring bike. The Outback is basically designed for off road action 👍🏽

    Great video. Thanks for detailing the buying process, explaining and actually showing the Pinion drive system.
    You went from what size front cog to what size to get the gearing you want? What size is the rear cog? And what belt size did you change from to 115 teeth? I was wondering whether there would be enough adjustment in releasing the mounting bolts of the Pinion gearbox housing and moving this to take up the additional slack from fitting a smaller front cog but obviously not, too much, hence smaller belt.
    I think the belt on my Rohloff hub Cube bike is 113T. I adjust the tension through an eccentric bottom bracket. Pretty easy to do. And yes love that the bike stays free of oil and grime and you never get oil on your hands, clothes or anything else. Happy days.
    The Pinion gearbox system looks a blindly simple system to maintain. Simple is good. Was with you 100% when you were talking about cleaning maintaining a derailleur geared bike. Been there done that wanted a much better system. I have a Brompton as well, 6 speed. Wish this was belt drive as well as it is a bummer to keep the chain transmission and adjacent frame, wheel, spokes, etc clean free of grime.
    I could spend all day watching you fettle ;@). Thanks for taking the time to make these videos of your bikes.

      The bike had a 118t belt and a 39t front cog. Went to a 115t belt with a 32t front cog. I did not need to use the Carbon Drive Belt Length calculator as the Outback has exactly the same chainstay length and a 32/32 cog set up so I just used the same belt length that has.

      It looks like within the last couple of weeks Tout Terrain have stopped shipping to the UK too. I spoke to a guy the other day and he said that www.kinetics-online.co.uk in Glasgow are still a UK dealer, but you would need to check before travel.
      Videos in the pipeline:
      1) Converting the Tour Terrain Scrambler into a flat bar tourer. All the bits are in order.
      2) The Tout Terrain Outback has been sold and I will be building up a Pinion/Gates bike up from complete scratch the frame is going to be either a steel one from Reeb or a bespoke titanium

      @@RidingBicycles Thanks for your reply. I think in reality a Tout Terrain or indeed any other bike of similar spec from a European bike brand is now a non starter. You got one just in time. It maybe an option if you can get one second hand, some one like you selling one, but then the spec and sizing has to tick all the boxes. As I suspected and you suggested in your video the only way to get one might be to actually got to Germany or Holland to buy such a bike either Tout Terrain, Santos or Van Nichollas, etc. But then would they even sell you one as you would presumably have to pay with funds from an English bank account? Don't know. Their and also other German brands plus cycle outlets from other EU member states refusal to supply the UK market seems spiteful. I am sure they still supply to other over seas markets outside the EU eg the US, Australia, but no longer the UK.
      Most of these bikes are made in Taiwan any way. Maybe I can get one from there? I have cycle toured in Taiwan and loved it. There are Brompton and Rohloff dealers there as well. Not sure about Pinion. There must be.
      Maybe buying just the Pinion gearbox itself and getting some one like Graham Foot at Slam69 with his Smokestone frames to supply a Pinion compatible frame is the way to go. Apparently he can't get Pinion gearboxes any longer.
      Brexit has been terrible for the supply of bicycles and components.
      I shall keep watching your channel with interest. Sounds like you have a lot of plans. Thanks again. ATB.

    It doesn't have to be a big deal relocating the shift knob. Any place on the handlebar is POOR, IMO.
    Right from the start, I put my Rohloff knob near the front on the top tube, with the knob pointing up and angled back a bit. Can't see the number window, but no big deal. My 2 cables will straddle the TT. Pinion cables would point down the left side I guess.
    All that's needed is 2 1/2" of 7/8" steel tube shaped and welded to a 3" piece of cut up frame tube. It should be 1/8" bigger diameter to allow for rubber padding. Sand down the 7/8" piece to allow for paint thickness, or metal plating. One hose clamp, tape and done.
    This allows for shifting with either hand and ZERO chance of damage or cable flopping out front.
    This is what I also do for my Sturmey Archer shifters.

    • @RidingBicycles
      @RidingBicycles  Před 2 lety

      These bikes come with the Cinq brifters for the gearbox, they don’t have a separate shifter they are built into the brake levers. I much prefer the Pinion twist shifter it works very much like the Rohloff version. If you have a twist shifter as you state there are multiple ways in which you can mount them. Another as advantage for a twist shifter and having the gearing separate to the brake levers 👍🏽

    After 2 years, Any problems with the cinq paddle shifters?

    • @RidingBicycles
      @RidingBicycles  Před 4 měsíci

      I got rid of the shifters and went flat bar. There was nothing wrong with them but I did miss the fact with a twist you can go through the whole range of gears and not just three etc. I really like the twist shifters for Rohloff and Pinion. Have in mind I am old skool. My go to bikes are my down tube friction shifters.

    I do prefer how Tout Terrain split the frame to the typical splice most manufacturers use.

      Hello, yes it is more secure than sliding dropouts and it gives a nice clean look.
      If you are in the UK the black TT Scrambler is coming up for sale. It has only done 50 miles. It has been converted to flat bar. It is in showroom condition. My part wants a pinion bike to tackle big off-road. She is thinking of a Ti frame too.
