      @@darknesswave100 Parents get in the way of adventure. Since Shounen protags are inevitably minors given the genre having no parents justifies the massive amount of danger the kids subject themselves. Most sane parents do not allow their kids to become mecha-pilots or demon hunters. So then you now need to either have the kids hide their activities or have the parents support them. The first is easily solved with abusive family. The other two create setting requirements, typically some sort of 'safe' entry point like a school (Boku no Hero) or the parents are themselves involved (In Naruto most kids of ninjas are pushed into become ninja in turn because they need to maintain clan secrets but also militaary force)

      Once they revealed he was a Shiba, his constant roughhousing, wrestling, and sneak attacks on Ichigo suddenly made so much sense. It was immediately reminiscent of Ganju Shiba. Shibas seem to be crass, loud, a bit violent and somewhat aloof.
      Ichigo and Kien's resemblance went beyond appearance - but much of their personality and way they react in conversation were uncanny. And later, it became obvious that this very closely paralleled Isshin too, as he is much the same way.

    I think Kubo very clearly hinted that Isshin was a shinigami all the way back at the start of the soul society arc. When Ichigo gets his summons from urahara to go to soul society and save rukia Isshin stops Ichigo right before he goes and gives him that good luck charm and says it'll protect Ichigo. Isshin presumably to the audience has no idea where Ichigo is about to go but I think that's a pretty obvious hint that he's well aware of what his son is up to.

      @lanariy6362 Před 2 lety +40

      There is even cooler subtle foreshadowing of Isshin's true nature actually. In the earliest chapters Kubo created little sketches at the end with character descriptions and stuff, and for Isshin he wrote that Isshin was supposed to be a morg owner (obvious relation to death) not a doctor so he looks a lot cooler in the black outfit rather than white (and of course black is associated with shinigami) which makes sense if Kubo planned Isshin to be a major shinigami figure from the start.

    My favorite moment with Isshin is not even in the Manga proper. It's one of those sketches Kubo does between chapters.
    During Uryu's contest with Ichigo in the first arc, after Chad awakens his powers and goes down, Kirin shows back up with Isshin but since Chad is already gone, Isshin thinks she just wants to play. In the sketch, if follows up on that moment by showing and stating that Kirin throughly defeated her dad and completely forgot about what was going on.
    At face value it's just another goofy moment, but once you know the truth about Isshin the scene completely changes. Isshin let Kirin beat him up to distract her from the deeply traumatic events going on. He was protecting her in the best, and really the only way he could.

So you might have a fire based one for one member, thant a ice based on for another, a Kedou based one for even another, and a weapon form one too. I could see even that Zangetsu might even be kind of like a weapon Zanpakuto in that it does not really have a energy type (ice, fire, or such) but when released it changed shape an even in Banki it changed shape an even clad over his body.
      The fact that both his father an Ichigo can both use Getsuga tensho coould show that this is a ability native to the Zanpakuto, which is changed to fit the element type of the shinigami using it. An Ichigo's released an banki are more of the unique abilities of his Zanpakuto. It would be a fun idea an really explain alot, while also fitting quite nicely without really causing much issue. Even the idea that the hallow was his Zanpakuto matches, as the hallow might have joined with the Zanpakuto's spirit in the way it would with elements or other types.

      if you look back, I forgot if it was shown in the manga, but Kaien's wife also looks very much like Masaki with long hair and Orihime. So basically the all Shiba men have a clear type. Despite how much Kubo built up the closeness between Ichigo and rukia and their complementary natures and descriptions of their powers, Rukia had no chance 😁

    • @pixel_glitched

      I second this and what Nicolae mentioned. I was also of the mind that it the Masaki and Orihime similarities were Kubo jokingly mirroring real life lore. That being, it is often said that sons end up marrying "their mother" - or someone much like thier mother.
      And the Shiba clan having "a type" could be a bit of Dragon Ball Z inspired thing, with Saiyans having a clear attraction to "strong willed women" (Shibas are abit Saiyan like, to be honest).

    But I didn't thought of Isshin in the Lost Agent Arc as a "bad father" or both not telling Ichigo was kinda dumb.
    If this kind of spiritual sword is just an "experiment" of Kisuke and has a potential chance to fail (in the end it worked well of course).. Giving his son some kind of "false hope" wouldn't feel right.

  • @christophermadigan3245
    @christophermadigan3245 Před 2 lety +5

    Thank you for doing a video on Isshin, he’s always been one of my favorites.
    There is so much about this character I admire. In many ways, he is sort of an anti-Byakuya (at least in the SS arc). He comes from a very noble family, he is naturally a powerful shingami, yet at no point do we see him treat anyone differently because because of this.
    In fact, he is willing to sacrifice this immediately to help someone that helped him. I love, love that scene that he immediately agrees to help Masaki with no hesitation. Not only does it connect Ichigo and Isshin in terms of personality, but it defines Isshin as someone who really doesn’t give any credence to power or status, he will help anyone (in this case, a Quincy).
    I agree that the blood war arc was leading up to Isshin doing something more. Part of me wishes that there was a Quincy introduced that connected Masaki, Ryuken, and Isshin all together for the latter two to fight. Maybe a family member of Masaki or Ryuken whose actions caused the deaths of both their spouses, almost like an anti Soken character. Not only would it showcase their powers a bit more, but maybe show their anger/rage that they keep back for the sake of their loved ones.
    Lastly, I mentioned this in a previous comment, but I love Isshin as a parent. He breaks many shonen dad archetypes. Like many of them, he has a hidden past and is powerful, but by the time the series starts, he is powerless. He spent years raising his family, being goofy, and being both an emotional support and a provider.
    Although the series shows him doting on his younger children, I do want to highlight his relationship with Ichigo. He trusts Ichigo to grow and make his own choices. Even when he gains his powers back and could theoretically be more of a mainstay figure, he doesn’t.
    I think he does this for two reasons: first, if he dies, his children no longer have a parent, which I don’t think he could bear leaving any of them (but namely the two younger) alone like that. Secondly, I think he wanted Ichigo to grow and make his own choices. Ichigo was a shingami/human/Quincy/hollow, in this world he was pretty much every being. Instead of trying to shape him into something, he instead took a supportive role, helping Ichigo when he needed him, but rarely telling him what to do. He never put a destiny on him, never told him he had to do this, or avoid that. He was quite simply his dad, someone that loved him and tried to help him, but still gave the power to his kid to make those choice. Really cool character.

    Isshin truly belongs to the troope of seemingly goofy characters who in reality are wise badasses.
    As for the inconsistencies;
    - Grand Fisher's attack on the graveyard; perhaps Isshin's powers haven't recovered yet.
    - Isshin not knowing about Vizards; Urahara is kind of shady and doesn't tell the full truth to basically anyone
    - Isshin and Shinji not recognizing each other's spiritual pressure; there's quite some time between them so when Shinji left Isshin was perhaps just a lower seated officer
    The plothole that I don't get is how come Rukia doesn't recognize Isshin. I mean she was a Shinigami for decades while Isshin was a captain who left only 20 years ago. But I guess that it can be explained that Rukia was focused on Kuchiki's and Kaien's death while since nothing much was happening, she probably never saw him in person even if she surely knew his name.

    My theory on how Isshin knows the final Getsuga is simple, Engetsu already told him about it and he has acquired it "just in case". We don't know the relationship between Isshin and Engetsu but I highly doubt it's as turbulent as Zangetsu and Ichigo.
    Zanpaktous tend to only reveal greater techniques, like Bankai, when the Shinigami has gotten to a certain strength. Based on the fight with Aizen I think it's safe to say Isshin is much stronger than a regular captain. So I think Engetsu has taught Isshin this technique as a "last resort". I also think Isshin's relationship with Engetsu was probably very close, similar to Zaraki and Yachiru.
    I do believe Kubo intended to have Isshin use it in the past and why he had to get his powers back but then decided against it to tie in the Quincy arc.

  • @SuperSilver316
    @SuperSilver316 Před 2 lety +39

    Isshin’s backstory is one of the coolest things in the series, and the Shiba clan connection is probably my favorite thing.
    One question that I don’t think is formally addressed, how does the Soul Society react to a Captain going missing like this? I feel like losing a Captain isn’t a normal occurrence, so how did they handle that on their end. Like we know Toshiro becomes the Captain, but that’s something that happens closer to the beginning of the series if my memory is correct. Just being in a Gigai doesn’t Necessarily means they forgot about him right, just that it makes him harder to find. Same thing with Shiba Clan, he’s the head of the household, did they just presume him dead for all this time, without even bothering to search for him?
    Another thing, Rangiku and Toshiro both stay in Ichigo’s house right? Are we to assume that they either didn’t know who his father was or that they never came in contact with him at any point? This is more similar to your point about the Vizards, and Urahara not being upfront with Isshin about their nature, but at the same time telling him about his experiences with regarding Hollowfication. Like it’s a really great backstory, with maybe like a few moments of disbelief suspension that need to be accounted for.
    I could be completely off base with questions and those may have been answered elsewhere, but these questions have been bugging me for a while now.

    An idea I liked very much before TYBW was that Ichigo's mother was the daughter of the Soul King and Isshin was a member of the Zero Division and her protector. Then, through whatever means, they end up on Earth, and decide not to return to Soul Society or are unable to do so, so they marry and start a family. With all due respect to Kubo, I've always felt making Masaki a Quincy added a bit too much baggage to Ichigo's familial history, but making it so both of Ichigo's parents had ties to Soul Society alone might have given his character arc and the revelations of his powers a tighter focus. However, I do hope we can see the story Kubo did give us fleshed out more in the near future.

    A small detail about Isshin having his revenge on grand fisher and "stealing" it from Ichigo is that you actually have to remember that grand fisher wasn't actually Masaki's killer. In the TYBW arc we learn that Isshin knows that, and it's even foreshadowed during memories in the rain, when Isshin gives his little speach to Ichigo, completely unphased by the battle that took place and sort of just not really being excited over grand fisher defeat! Toshiro"it's been a while since I seen you Captain."
    Ishin"it's nice to see you too. But remember I'm not longer your captain nor you my subordinate. I've always knew that you would become captain one day."

    A video dedicated Everything But The Rain would be great. I love how those chapters contained some of the biggest lore drops in the entire series.

    In the last couple of days I watched at least 50 of your videos and I can't stop! Like you I was a weekly reader from around the time the Arrancars were introduced. Bleach was THE series for me and I was very invested in the fandom (especially lore speculation!!). Sadly I had largely checked out after Byakuya was resurrected and the pacing became so obviously rushed. After all these years all I could recall about the final arc was the disappointment I felt at pretty much everything about it and the series conclusion. Which is why I'm really grateful to have found your channel. It helped me remember what I really enjoyed about Bleach, and appreciate the work Kubo put into it. Hope the new anime and manga deliver!!

    So like. Love the video as always my man. Also congrats on 100k. The whole lost agent ark, where ya know ichigo is suspicious of everyone and Isshin could’ve just “said something”, I 100% agree. However, you said it yourself, ichigo was super depressed, and if his father knew if a way, but didn’t know it would actually work he wouldn’t want to get his hopes up. And would want to keep it a ‘surprise’. But since ichigo isn’t thinking all that clearly of course even just the slightest push from ginjo would make him suspicious of his own family and mentor. That’s just my two cents. Again man, keep up the good work love the video!

    27:55 Never made the connection with Ichigo's reaction towards his father being influenced by Rukia. You just made my night, thanks man.

    amazing video as always
    I love 4:28 talking about how isshin behaves
    if he's been doing this his whole life or at least after masaki died I can imagen why ichigo is as strong as he is starting off lol

    At this point I want Isshin's bankai to be a fire based zanpakutou but instead of simply controlling fire like Yamamoto he can produce like a blue fire which is the hottest burning flame

    Thanks for this break down I enjou it very much. It just makes me wish that Kubo adds more chapters to the story to delve into this amazing characters even more because there's a lot of meat there yet to be chewed on.
