- Exposed bass fishing tournament anglers caught on video stringing bass to barge slip. Recently in the Cal Sag Bass Anglers tournament, a tug engineer noticed something suspicious happening at a barge slip. The enginner video'd anglers stringing bass for a local tournament to the slip.

10 year suspension of fishing and hunting license. Banned from tournaments and a fine of 10 times the 1st place finish. People will think twice about cheating.

I agree 100%, he should never be able to obtain a fishing license in any state in the US and Shirley should never be able to fish another tournament, someone that does something that deliberate. They should be a healthy fine and they should take his boatand equipment and sell it and use it for fish habitat. Thank you for exposing people like this.

Now i’m not a tournament angler, but I feel like in all of the real major tournaments people should have to wear body cams to prove they aren’t cheating.
All should have a gopro running and if something is in question, then it could be looked at. Great idea. Cheers and tight lines!!

This is why I don’t like and do not generally participate in team events. When there is a random draw, it is much harder for someone to cheat.

They would never have caught him if it for a random guy actually caring enough to care. I have seen cheating on local tournaments . They unfortunately didn’t have enough to do anything. Anytime there is money involved people get stupid.

I work with Joe and showed up to go out on a tug that morning. I was watching tv and drinking coffee on the crew hotel boat with my back to the door leading out to the working tugs/slip. Suddenly an IDNR officer came walking through in full regalia. He shook everyone's hand talked with us and went on about his day. They apparently staked him out that morning and the IDNR got video of him.
The IDNR apparently slapped him with a bunch of fines at the weigh in. Apparently a "mortgage payment's worth.'

Whatever the penalty is for stealing $1,500 that is what he should get, plus suspend his license for 10 years and lifetime ban from tournaments. If the penalty isn't severe enough guys will continue to cheat. You have to make the consequences for cheating so severe you scare the s*#t out of them ...

You guys this has been going on for more years than I can count;;;, it was baskets in boat slips in my area , the day of the tournaments they just rode around to the boat houses and picked up what they weighed in , this has happened for over 30 years nothing new;;;;;;;;It does need to stop and everyone with a video phone has helped alot;;;;;;;;

There was a bass circuit here in Ohio 20 some years ago, and there was a team Of 2 guys ( SHERIFFS, NO LESS) who were on a real hot streak. They won like 4 of the last tournaments of the year, and then won the Season ending Championship.
Lo and behold, the tournament directors administered Polygraph tests.
Now, Polygraphs are inadmissible in a court of law, and the reason is simple:
They aren’t 100% accurate.
Back to the 2 perps. When they showed up to collect their $10,000 check for “Winning” the tournament, the director explained to them both that they had FAILED their polygraphs miserably, and after a 2 hour interrogation, they came clean and admitted they had been tying large bass with 30# braid to overhanging tree limbs, and then Using a square bill crankbait, they would cast underneath that particular tree, wind down, and hook the bass.
Needless to say, they were stripped of their championship winnings, and humiliated beyond belief ( Deservedly so). One of the anglers a couple years later showed up to fish an open tournament, and everyone in the field said that if that particular angler was allowed to fish the tournament, they would all BOYCOTT that tournament, and demand their entry fees back.
In the end, Cheaters never win, and winners never cheat.
That stinks. This is happening all the time unfortunately. I think, and I could be wrong, but I overheard something YEARS ago and I don't know exactly the end result, and it took me several years to remember the conversation I overheard. Cheers and tight lines!!

Hasn't gone through any court and no declarations from any tournament authorities. Soon the findings will move this from alleged to damn guilty.
The very reason B.A.S.S. was formed was to have an honest fishing tournament series. Ray Scott (with the help of others) created it because any fishing tournament was known for cheating. It was more of a "who can cheat the best" type of arrangement prior to B.A.S.S. The one thing I don't get is how could they grab the fish at 4:30 prior to blast off? Don't they have a live well check? All the tournaments I've fished in the last 40+ years always have blast off at "safe light". It seems to me 4:30 is a little before that. Just saying.

Not your average Joe. Anytime money is involved it will attract some of the wrong people whether it be bass fishing or card games. The penalty must be great enough to deter and expose those folks. Thank you for doing your part.

I think he should be treated like he stole $. Maybe a couple months in jail with probation. Loss of tournament privileges. But no confiscation of boat. Unless he won the boat. And there's evidence he cheated to win it. He is just a stupid cheater. It's not like he was caught with a thousand bass filets in his freezer and he is going down to maxwell street to sell bass

Cheating's pretty common these days...if FFS wasn't such a huge money maker, that would be cheating as well...pretty obvious

Was the tournament hosted by the state? If not, then they don't have any right to take away their license. Getting banned from being in tournaments is enough if the tournament director doesn't press charges . They should never be stripped of their rights to fish.
Some States have laws about theft by deception.

While it doesn’t look good for Dave, we need to leave room for more information to surface. Joe seems like the best kind of person but we haven’t seen the video.

I feel like in TX we have 1 in 25 anglers cheating. Maybe 1 in 10 on a night tourney. Just cheater city, let guys go out on their own and rendezvous back at a spot 8 hours later for a weigh in. It’s the lowest hanging fruit in the gambling world for cheaters. Takes all the fun out when you realize how many cheaters are among your local fishing leagues.

C'mon Steve.... you don't think he should suffer financially!! Throw the book at him, a should never fish a bass tournament again. I fished a circuit for years, and the director promised and noted iñ every tournament. . Caught cheating and you will be banned from every tournament for life! Cheating and an infraction are two different things!
