LARRY KING LIVE: Ellen DeGeneres - 5/12/1998, CNN
A year earlier, the sitcom ELLEN had broken new ground as the first American TV series to have its central character come out as queer mid-series. I know she’s been problematic this past decade, but 90s to 2000 Ellen wqs pretty good stand up wise

Sad thing is. I've been out since I was 15 back in 1995 living in Kentucky. Yes I was happy for Ellen, but this didn't help men. Lesbians usually have it a little easier due to cis men's disgusting idea of what they think gay women do. I don't think this was ground breaking!!

Such a true comment. I even had a lesbian acquaintance say a similar thing to me about how she believed her journey was much easier than a homosexual cis man due to heterosexual cis men's warped ideas about lesbian sexuality vs. gay men's sexuality. She taught me that we're living in a patriarchy where, even if people have negative opinions about lesbians, lesbian women don't pose the same threat to the fragile male ego the way gay men do. It opened my eyes!

exactly. Lesbians have it soooooo much easier as opposed to gay men.

but regardless her coming out is what millions of other people were facing... there were many "gay" men & women being kicked out of their homes because parents back then did not believe in that way of life... ellen believed people should Love one who they love and do what makes them happy.... After All being gay in many countries like Africa, Middle east etc, is grounds for Execution or jail time.
