    My mom is married with a American guy. So I had my friend on my room studying. So my friend had his arm around my neck and I had my hand on his leg. We Always sit like that because we are friends. Then my my steph-dad came up with some water. He looked at us, left the water and Went out. When my friend went home I had to sit down 3 hours with my seph-dad and explain to him i'm not gay

    I watch a lot of reactions to kpop and things like that and a lot of westerners first assume that Korean guys are gay because they are so comfortable touching and also that guys compliment each other way more...like saying they're handsome or have a good body. I'm American and personally hate hugs unless someone asks me first, but I definitely know people who hug every time they meet or leave

    • @evemoon9229

      lelmDR.WHO? most of guy in my country hate K pop because they think all kpop group members are gay. Even i explained them that skinship between men is a korean culture they still can't accept it. The worst part is, most of them called me a weirdo because i love k pop song, even the singer are soloist. they just hate about all the things related to kpop. this is not fair.

  • @mistressofstones
    @mistressofstones Před 6 lety +125

    One thing I've noticed watching a lot of Korean content is that Korean people when they are with close friends are really warm and concerned about each other. Westerners can be nice too of course but looking at my Australian culture in contrast because we are so individualistic you have to always keep stock of those around you even if they are people you are friendly with. It's easy for friends to fall out, or even for people to get so hurt by others they decide not to be open any more for long periods of time if they are sensitive. Koreans seem to keep friends for a long time, so they must find it easier to resolve conflicts? Just learning about the culture from afar so I could be off base.

      @laurenaaa8719 Před 6 lety +1

    • @sashimicity
      @sashimicity Před 6 lety +15

      I feel like you have to keep in mind that a lot of the k-pop groups we watch have been together since they were trainees. So they've already known each other for a long time and are forced to dorm together and promote together. You'll notice that the older k-pop groups aren't typically as close or warm to each other, and that's why a lot of them have disbanded recently. Miss A was pretty infamous for having member issues. EXO was the same, and at one point they wanted to give up and disband. I feel like you can't generalise based off what you see online because korean media content is scripted, and they have an obligation to promote their group in a positive light.

    • @mistressofstones
      @mistressofstones Před 6 lety +8

      JNatalie - I agree 100% re kpop a lot of what we see is just fan service type stuff and they are strongly encouraged to seem cute and innocent and for Koreans skinship is childlike and innocent I think. Kpop is a world of fantasy to a large extent. I was speaking more about non-kpop content like serious films, and yes films are films not reality, but a countries art does convey their culture. If you look at films made by my country you will see different themes and people behaving differently toward each other. Also I'm referring to factual content about Korean culture like educational videos about how to behave in Korea.

    • @f.j.9391
      @f.j.9391 Před 6 lety +11

      Yes I saw this video where they talk about the friend ship between Koreans and westerners. They said that in Korea they value one small group of people and actually try to get to know them as deeply so they can be comfortable and that's the mentality of a korean vs westerners who rather have a hug circle that are connected to other circle of friends and their mentality is "I can make other friends" rather than keeping the ones they have and also their mentality is a bit distrusting on both parties so they are careful on what they choose to tell one another and if both people are like that then there will always be that trust barrier

    • @f.j.9391
      @f.j.9391 Před 6 lety +6

      I'm guessing that touchy skin ship that Koreans have help a lot more than you think. Some people need that friendship affection to actually feel you trust them and it warms my heart tbh. Its like saying "if you trust me as a friend then prove it" and makes you and the other person feel trusted and comfortable and used to it.

The dude kept trying to convince me we had like energy flow through our bodies and that spirits were real and crazy stuff like that. And after, they walked me back to the station and the gate didn't want to open but I wanted to get out of there so bad I jumped over it and booked it out of there. Now I just act bitchy and keep walking.

    I work in Sinchon and live in Hongdae and I always encounter the cult people on my way to work. No I know to just ignore them and walk past them. But one of my new workers came in the next day all excited saying she made new friends. She told us exactly what they talked about and we all knew right away it was the cult people. They always talk about some traditional tea ceremony and wearing traditional clothes and always try to drag you.

I asked if it costs. They said no so I participated. After the ceremony and eating they started to ask about my parents and jobs to 'tell me something about my glorious future' so I said I have to leave.^^ it was interesting but I'd recommend to always be safe and keep your bag close.;)

They asked me how old I was and if I lived alone and where my house was, which made me feel totally uncomfortable, so I lied. They said we have to take you to a special Korean ceremony that only happens on this day once a year (lunar new year) so you have to come with us right now, and I was like (inside: cult!), definitely not.

    Everyone says hi with two kisses, one on each side of the face, girls and boys hug frequently when they're friends and it's totally ok, but when two boys have too much contact people start to think they're gay, for example, here two boys don't hold hands and don't get too touchy

    I love the fact that Korean men have no issues with skinship. My high school was a lot like that and I'm in America. But there was no gender issues between male and female. We just all loved each other. Guys, girls, everyone would greet with hugs and hang on each other. No one thought anything about sexuality and it wouldn't have mattered either way.

    I had 2 young ppl, close to my age, come up to me in Yeongdeungpo, in the underground mall, asking at first about myself and then asking if I'd be interested in a Korean cooking class bc they were hoping to get more foreigners interested. I said sure, bc I loved to cook. They invited me to the next class which was in Yatap, far east of Seoul and like almost 2 hours away from where I live (bc I lived on the west coast of Seoul at the time). I asked my Korean friend to come with me since it was close to where he lived, & low and behold....it was a Christian church. They tricked us and tried getting us to stay through a long church service, telling us the cooking class was after the service. My Korean friend was pissed but I didn't want to be disrespectful so we stayed about 10 min and then after realizing it wasn't going to end soon we left. I was so angry bc it took so much time from me! It was so far! Uhhh never again. Be warned. Cults/crazy religious ppl are everywhere here

    I do genuinely prefer the Korean culture. I have some Korean family members (mainly through marriage) my cousin married a Korean man. Lovely marriage, now they have two kids. Anyways and the first time I met him he was with one of his friends. His friend had his arm around my now cousin and my cousin had his arm around his side. And I was really confused. So I went to him and was like "aren't you engaged to my cousin." He laughed and explained the who deal. And I've even put that into my daily life with friends. Some of my friends find it weird, others don't. I also had a friend hug me and a different cousin and his family helped raise me (she was Korean as well) so I was particularly raised by a white and Asian family. Hugs were weird. Half my family wanted bows, others wanted hugs. I'd get the two confused and end up hugging the wrong person and bowing to a different person. And ya know you're supposed to respect your elders (even your hyungs and noonas) I was talking to my hyung and the first thing I did was bow. He was very confused. (I call my male friends either hyung or oppa depending on how close I am to them because I'm androgynous I just call my male friends both lol) it's definitely a different life style but it's always fun 😂

    I'm American and I personally don't engage in skin contact most of the time, even with my best friend I'm awkward about it lol. I try to do little things though, for instance, if she puts her legs on my lap while we're on the couch relaxing, I'll try to casually rest my arms on her legs (although I'm still kind of hyper aware 😅). Of course when it comes to family events, I hug my family members easily, but I normally wait to hug someone until I have known them for quite some time.

    Here in Slovenia you can’t really hug each other unless your like close or a good friend. If your just friends it’s ok to touch each others shoulders or put an arm around each others shoulders but you cant hug, hold hands or so...

    I’m at 0:50 and let me just say, I’ve lived in America my whole life, but I don’t like being touched. Don’t .touch.me. Not everyone in America is the same tbh and I think that’s why most people don’t know how to approach others (if you want to closer in any way) because it’s so hard to know what people are and aren’t comfortable with. Wow,America is so diverse in every aspect..

Like me and my friends arms are usually just tangled together or we're holding hands, and ive seen dudes in my class who are like that too(except the hand holding) so idk it doesnt feel too weird to me

    In Tunisia (Arab country) girls hug each other and guys hug each other, but without being gay, just friends, but hugging between guy and girl is pretty rare, only if they are dating for a long time and already confessed the love.
    In restaurents, people wait for the eye contact with the server to call him

    My grandma is American and when we're at a restaurant if she needs something she won't wait she will also raise up her hand and say "waiter!". Some of my other family members and friends also do this when we go out to eat. I sometimes get a little embarrassed but then again I just try not to care.

    Yea, in Canada, men are still not very accepting of gay men and value personal space. Generally speaking, the U.S and Canada are very similar. Logan has it wrong when it comes to hugs. You can hug family or people you are very close to that you haven't seen in years. But generally speaking, men tend to shake hands. When it comes to a man and a woman, it has to be the girl that initiates the hug. Otherwise, it's probably just as weird as it was for him in Korea.
    When it comes to the way restaurants work, waiters get a tip(usually 15% of total bill) for their service. It is seen as EXTREMELY rude not to tip a waiter unless you have a very valid reason regarding their service. I.e they make you wait with the bill for obnoxious amounts of time after you are done eating. There is a table mannerism to indicate you are done eating. You put your knife and fork inside the plate both pointing ahead and adjacent to each other. This is usually taught by parents but if your parents don't know table manners, you can learn them from observing or eating with people who do. Yet Logan here seems to never have learnt it, somehow. This is a horribly annoying system but nonetheless a known custom everywhere in the U.S and Canada.
    I will visit South Korea in the future. I wish to see the amazing culture established in your country. Koreans are one of the only remaining nation's where the majority seem's to understand the differences between idea's and reality. They don't just see the "idealistic world values" that so many are trying to implement in the west. Individuals here have too much power and many don't understand the right time or way to use it. It makes me sad that our society is being crippled by stupidity and a lack of culture. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful world. I can't wait to go see your country and learn about it. :D

    Well, for the age mistake with the girls, not only is it a genetic thing (different races aging “differently”, etc), but it’s also a beauty/makeup standard. American/Western beauty trends generally go for a more defined and mature look, while most Korean looks generally go for a more soft, youthful appearance.
