- I LOVED Robocop growing up. So you can imagine my excitement with a car company released a car that looks like Robocop.
Paul Maric reviews the 2022 Hyundai Staria to see if Hyundai's all-new people mover that shares a platform with the Kia Carnival has what it takes to compete in this segment.

Hey guys - we've just been notified of an error in the video. The base in the third row comes up and allows the third row to slide forward to expand the space (it eliminates the clumsy folded over third row that removes space). We couldn't get the third row to slide on the day, but have now seen it in another vide on the car.
PUSH BUTTON START AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tell us more about the gear shift system used in this vehicle! Will you?
Hi CarExpert. Thanks for this video. Just wondering, can't you raise the driver seat to allow you to see above the steering wheel. That will solve the issue of you not seeing the digital display...
Or lower the steering wheel.@@alvingovender2897
Never thought I would say how amazing a van looks but that looks amazing!
I think I would go with the staria, I don't care what other people say, to me It looks ABSOLUTELY COOOOL
Edit: A bit disappointed by the interior
Some people will definitely love the design!
Bro my dad wants to buy this car even though he has a M5… honestly I love the staria
Kia and Hyundai are on the right track. & They have been doing some awesome work... Hope they keep it up...
It's a shame the world fell out of love with the mpv, cos they are brilliant devices for moving things and people. Airport services eat your heart out!
As a parent of many young children I think the passenger view is a fantastic idea especially in a van where with several carseats installed it can be hard to see what the children in the back are doing.
I would have loved to see easier access to the rear row (ie seat folding completely out of the way) and the option to slide the rear row forward or backwards to create more space where needed as I think practicality wise with young children those features would have made a big difference.
This is one of two options we are looking at purchasing at the moment so thank you for your review, its very helpful to see in so much detail.
I always enjoy the reviews in this channel :)
Thanks mate.
i like your review you are honest because u showed us actual legroom in third row seat.
Thank You
1st option: Kia Carnival
2nd option: Kia Carnival
3rd option: back to 1st option
The big appeal to me with the Staria not often mentioned is that in addition to AWD it also has a center diff lock (4x4).
While it's never going to be a great off roader it could make for a good 4x4 camper with the ability to tackle beaches and tracks AWD's will struggle on.
This is such a cool van!
This would look “out of this world” if someone pimped it out like the Japanese VIP mover. Apart from RoboCop, the Ridley’s Alien theme is what comes to my mind. 🤣
Waiting for this review from you mate
Enjoy!
I kind of like it - rocking some 5th generation Delica vibes!
That’s what I reckon. Could be quite a cult vehicle, like the Delica.
This is great but it says yeah I am a van but the carnival looks like a van designed by range rover, so I'll probably be having a carnival if I have to
I like the bobby strange look
I've just bought one and totally agree with all your comments. I have the V6 and it seems more punchy and less noise. Defs need more speakers to fill the cavernous cabin. I've gone for dark tint due to such large windows lol
and how do you like it so far?
Having just spent a week hooning a new Carnival around Tasmania. I too would be going for the Kia. I always bagged out MPVs but the Kia definitely drove well, was well equipped and looks a million times better than this. The Staria gives me weird Futurama vibes. I feel like Bender may have dated a robot that looks like the Staria 😂
I want to buy one. I’ve had an iLoad van for almost 12 years and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever had. I want the AWD but I don’t want the seats, at least not all of them. I’d turn it into a basic camper as I’ve done with my current van. Been waiting for an AWD van and I don’t trust VW. This looks perfect.
You won't be let down with the 2.2 diesel engine and drivetrain. Plenty of high mileage older Santa Fe's with this engine pushing past 400,000km.
Shame it has been depowered by 17kw and 10nm over the Santa Fe D4HB diesel.
We just got one for this reason! So excited!
Hi Paul, Love the way you do the reviews. Any idea when you'd be able to get your hands on a Volvo V60 Cross Country for review please?
You're a true expert, awesome job
It look like they did a van from an 80's movie that had a futuristic van.
Hi Paul, great stuff.please review the Staria Lounge 9 seater
This looks sooo futuristic!
i just saw this van in Johannesburg South Africa, hence I am here for the review
“Stari-art” 4:17 haha
You are so right about piano black interiors. I drive a Honda for work and you can see a timeline of fingerprints everywhere!
Thanks for this excellent review Paul. I was deliberating this over the carnival and bought the staria because of the cabin height. It allows me to put baby in the car seat from within the cabin whilst standing almost upright. You’d have to do this from the outside in the carnival
that's exactly what i'm looking for in my next car! anymore good points you've got?
@@manaaalsuwaidi3643 that’s the main one. Aside from the Staria being bigger, the Carnival probably is the better overall car
In Korea you can buy a pop-top campervan version of the Staria with bells and whistles
For the Indonesian market we get the top spec 7 seater limo model with 2nd row captain chair with leg rest. But we don't get the adaptive cruise and the 10 inch screen like you have. And also our staria features a copper trim around the exterior rather than the boring chrome or silver. We also get the heated and cooled seat for both the first and second row.
Great review - will Australia get the luxury pack for rear passengers like overseas models?
Awesome review as always!
I know you’ve done the MG HS in the past, but I’m keen to know whether you can review the MG ZST? Interested in getting one of these but would love your opinion!
Just avoid it & get a Mazda if you want long-term reliability and so you get more than $5 for trade in when you're ready for a new car.
My son has a new MG ZST better than Mazda.
Will try and track one down.
I bought one. If you raise the height on the driver’s seat it fixes the issue with seeing the gauges.
Doesn't the 3rd row slide forward and backward?
Are they already delivering mate? I heard there are new car shortages in supply due to all the electronics issues around the world?
@@GyrotexGaming yep, I got mine a few weeks ago.
@@ianzutt thanks, great to hear. How is it in every day use, do you drive around city much?
Coming out of ownership of a Mitsubishi Pajero, having a centre armrest was a godsend for driving comfort. Being able to drive with your left elbow resting atop, made long journeys all the more relaxing and enjoyable...Until that is, I went for a test drive. 70K on-roads and the OZ spec misses out on this...yet other markets get fold down armrests. As a comparison, the LDV G10 Executive for 40K gets BOTH front and rear armrests...Hyundai OZ..A shame!
Yeah I really would have liked an arm rest for longer distance drives.
I'm from Pakistan and considering buying one of these. However, the excessive diesel engine noise inside the car is off-putting. I'm a bit undecided now. Great video, though! You presented all the details very professionally. Keep up the good work!
Yep love my 2023 turbo diesel, currently ripping back seats out and fitting a 2m x 1.2m mattress. I’ll probably live in it as I like to travel whilst working in my online biz. The amount of glass makes for a great view when you pull up on a beach or lake. Nice quiet & smooth drive, feels more like a boat lol
Carnival hands down. We have one and is the best most versatile car I've had. Being able to remove the middle seat is a big plus, because you can have child seats in the middle row and still access the third row without having to uninstall a child seat. The configuration of the cargo area is better too because you can drop the third row and have a flat storage space.
But its front wheel drive....
Super cool...another interesting vehicle we’ll never get in the US..
I have an iload which I love but miss having all the extras , is it the same size as an iload ? And what’s the price point of the cargo van ? Great vid 👍thanks peter
I live in the US, and I'm visiting Aruba where I saw the Staria for the first time. I would kill to have one of these in the US. Even with the limitations brought up in your video, I would much rather this over a generic SUV/Minivan, or a Merc/Ford van. Such a smart looking car.
The Citroen C4 Grand Picasso mirror was far better than the camera to watch the rear - less distracting, no need to touch any buttons.
Did you ever drive one Paul? It was amazing. Ridiculous that almost no one bought one
Can you do a detailed review of the Haval H6 Ultra in Hamilton White?
Awesome reviews! What cam do u guys use?
I saw one for the first time on street just yesterday. I looks unusual and amazing.
I thought this was still in its concept design phase. The front end is quite unique.
Although, it does seem to blend back into reality once you get to the front doors.
I would take the Carnival, this Staria looks like a mini-bus.
It has exceeded my expectations. I rented and drove it.
I want to request if you can review the new 2020 Pajero. I love your videos all the way from Ghana 🇬🇭
Pajero has been axed 😢
Please do a review on the latest toyota super grandia. Please try to do the one with captain seat specification. Loved your videos. Good job. Keep up the good work. 😍
Thanks! Unfortunately we don’t get those in Australia.
@@CarExpertAus The Toyota Super Grandia may just be Australia's Granvia 😊
@@mark_u Yes. So if possible please do a review. 🙂
If you've never seen RoboCop taking number 2, Hyundai has just made sure that you know how he looks like.
Saw one today at the local dealership, and it looked interesting, but I'd only seriously be looking at the Caravelle or Carnival after that review.
I would definitely choose the staria knowing that it can be configured to carry up to 12 people or so ive heard. but I gotta wonder if they will manufacture a trim that has AWD and hybrid or both. and of course if and when it'll be available in North America.
What a beautifull van.
Love the alcantara headliner.
Can't wait to see this van in Europe.
I think the passenger view option would be good for taxis maybe? If you could record it, even better. Just my two cents as in Europe we have a lot of minivan taxis.
Hi Paul love all your reviews, this one is close to my heart as a tradie with kids I currently own a 2019 Hyundai Iload crew cab. We as a family love it, good to work out of, power and handles like a car. This staria however really does something to my eyes. If this is the design they are going to have for the Iload as well then when I upgrade in a year I’ll be getting a Hiace. The front is hideous the lack of Centre console and the all the dust collecting shiny bits. Its a no from me. Keep up the great work.
I’d get the Staria. It looks so different in a good way.
i low key love vans and the space in them especially peugeot rafter which we don't get in australia. so if i was to buy one i would buy the kia carnival
The passenger view will be great for travelling with kids in this van
That boot space looks amazing. Does anyone know what size of the pink suitcase is? I've tried looking for the size from other videos but no luck.
Thanks 🙏.
I wonder what is different between Htrac vs 4motion on the vans.
I wish to make a big lap in near future, and will park the van along rivers.
The 4motion and Htrac are just electronically controlled AWD systems. AWD can help a little on slippery surfaces but is no substitute for true 50/50 4X4 offroad. The great thing about the Staria is not the Htrac AWD system but that it indeed also offers true 4X4 which can be engaged by the push of a button. That is a game changer and will allow you to traverse beaches and 4x4 tracks that an AWD will struggle on. I'm also looking into this van potentially for a big lap. :)
I really dig this. It reminds me of GM's early 1990s "Dustbuster" vans we got in the US. (Yes, I liked those. Don't judge me.)
I love how you told me it's okay because it looks like a space ship
😅
To see the speedo can’t you lower the steering wheel and/or raise your seat higher?
Those rear seats all need to fold flat as well as be removed fully if required.
QUESTION - I wonder if this is the best vehicle to buy for a couple with no children, who want to put a mattress in the back so that you can sleep in it occasionally when making touring trips away???
The rest of the time just want to use as an everyday car.
Would have liked it to have been a self parking vehicle, especially as its large.
Thanks for your replies
This is really funky
hey Paul , i have seen the vehicle in the flesh and im glad you cant see the out side while driving it , question ? how safe would the big glass windows in a crash ? would you get showered in glass ? and looking for a work van , again lacking in performance . mmmm....
In Korea, it is different categories between Carnival and Staria. Staria is much similar malfunction van such as Ford E series van. Carnival also used to van however it is a lot luxurious than Staria. You can simply compare the seats each of them ha ha. Anyway good review!
They are the same price in Australia.
Hi Paul,Do you think it should have arm-rest for driver?
Towball download is only 100kg apparently and that is more limiting than 2500kg. Do rear seats slide and if so would that increase leg room from that you suggested? The inability to see the speedo area is really critical I think and would make this a less than desirable ride. The Carnival looks a better bet.
Looks better in person than in pictures
It feels a bit too rushed in my opinion. The interior configuration and ergonomics could be so much better, this is pretty much the same as the old iMax in that regard. It feels way to much like a commercial van to be a people mover. I'd rather get a Carnival.
Yeah unfortunately we don’t get the interior configurations other markets have.
I agree. I would have expected captain seats and good stereo....
@@CarExpertAus I find that strange, as Hyundai manufacture vehicles for the World market. In the Philippines, there are two Staria models, with the Lounge variant being the top spec model. Are you saying that Australia is only importing the base model, albeit that it's interior features are luxuriously better than some of it's competitors? ...
@@davidhamilton506 Yep we only get the one interior configuration for Australia.
@@CarExpertAus OK, thank you...
Paul do you know when the 2022 model will actually arrive in Australia as this model is actually the 2021 model, the 2022 model has 4 segmented led head lights each side and armrest on the front seats…..
1:39 Why indonesian version of staria have different placement for the indicator light? (indo version is on the led strip)
The vehicle reminds me of the old Toyota Tarago of the 1990's, but overall it looked unfinished or bland, as if the designers lost interest part-way through. And Paul really gave it a shellacking over quality, design, and execution issues. It seems that the sister brand Kia does these things so much better than Hyundai. I was surprised the second row seat didn't do more than just fold the seat squab onto the cushion, especially given what looked like a mechanism handle on the back of the cushion. I saw a few controls and such that were lifted straight from the Hyundai parts bin, which is as disappointing as only single-zone climate control in the front row. And regarding designing a vehicle to fit the majority of potential customers, Paul, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself over the "short torso, long legs" bit, because over 51% of the population fall into that category. Would I buy one in preference to a Carnival? Absolutely not: poor sound system, instruments I can't see, quality/design issues, and single-zone climate control are all deal-breakers.
Is the STARIA Lounge version going to be arriving in Australia?
This is low trim in markets such as Korea or South East Asia. There are versions with 4 rows of seats or 3 rows of seats but with comfortable captain seats in the 2nd row that slide, recline, and tilt electrically.
So, the revolving chairs setup is not available in Australia?
One fine day hyundai's head designer goes on a fishing trip and there sees a dolphin ... excited he says what a majestic creature and transforms that to a car 🤓☻
Seeing this car’s design the Red Fury Turbo Racer from “Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs” comes to mind or Inspector Gadget’s van. I was expecting the Staria sold ouside of Korea to be available only with the Lounge interior and exterior specifications. The Lounge version looks so much better and more premium than this does. Doesn’t seems as refined and practical as I was hoping it would be and that’s a shame because I love the exterior design. The Carnival seems like the more cerebral and much more practical choice and that’s really frustrating because it doesn’t look as good as far as the aesthetics go.
I love This man and Car ❤❤❤❤❤❤
🙌
I'd say KIA Carnival is still unbeatable contender in terms of space and practicality, plus it has premium quality interior.
fyi, in Indonesia this car has optional grill’s colour. so u can pick bronze chrome colour for robocop face.. 😁
It's reminiscent of the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina Van, especially in the tall tailights and angular nose, mixed with the Toyota Tarago.
Interesting how what was futuristic 30 years ago is still futuristic. It's a refreshing change from the sea of bland CUVs.
Wish these were sold in the USA, I'd love to have one with the diesel and AWD. I'd rip out the rear seating and just use it as a cargo van.
hard decision, don't want to get deseil but it's awd. I have been driven a rental staria - petrol modle... for many days and just love it, planning to get one.
8:30 - i have found that with the rear view mirror on a new corolla. im average height - just under 6 ft and the mirror just doesnt go high enough to see the full back. it goes down a long way - not sure why as it is useless to have that angle flexibility.
It's got some good features but it lets you down in important areas (cramped interior space, drivers digital display being too low, way too much piano black, wheels imo look aweful, no drivers/passenger arm rest, average stereo etc.) You're spending close to $70000! these are pretty significant deal breakers. Great review btw
"Stariart with the key" nice one lol
Not the red thingy, just pull the latch beside the 2nd row seat to fold it. The red tag is for second option, usually use from inside.
That one just folded it, but didn’t slide the row forward.
Am i the only one who thinks this is really cool
When will you review the Granvia?
I think I saw this van on the movie 'back to the future 4' 🤣
Great for company shuttles for everyone else I suggest contraception.
Cool aquarium. Want.
Im going for the carnival
The design of this car doesn't click for me.....Kia carnival followed by Honda Odyssey are anyday better ( I think 🤔 it's the same segment)...vans can be beautiful look at Kia...or the never aging Volkswagen Kombivan....bit as usual Paul another flawless, unbiased and smooth review....
Thought it looked futuristic then I remembered the Citroën Picasso. Same design cues, released five years ago
I’m just happy Hyundai’s van/people mover now doesn’t have the same name as a movie screen and those taillights look like the designers took inspiration from game boy graphics or something.
😅
Gonna miss the iLoad. My favourite moving van.
shame its not the 200ps 2.2 diesel output, may have given it a bit more driving fun!. I have previously owned 2 fiat multipla's years ago so nice to see some unique styling again. Doubt this will come to the UK.
The look of the Staria makes me wish a modern version of the Toyota Previa still existed today…
Definitely. Drove an '04 Estima (it was 15 years old) and for its age, it was a great car and very practical, while I would have loved for the rear seats to fold like an SUV, the trade-off was that the whole row slid like rows 1 and 2, so you could maximise the cargo area as needed and still carry 8.
Saw one of this on the road yesterday for the first time. My daughter thought it looked like a dog without a nose. ☺
I think you can adjust the steering wheel.
What about second row cup holders, are they on the side doors???
