    POWAH is all well and good, but The Senate made Sheev untouchable. The people love Democracy. Palpatine was the Senate. Therefore, Palpatine was Democracy, and Obi-Wan's alligeance was to Democracy.
    Therefore by becoming the Senate he gained the political high ground.

    Considering that he was seemingly unable to restrain himself from evil cackling on a near-constant basis it only made sense that he had to cut his public appearances. A shriveled old guy in black robes cackling all the time just screams "evil wizard" and would have made it obvious that he had lied about Jedi.

    • @zl8353
      @zl8353 Před 6 lety +30

      How had he lied about the Jedi? They did try to kill him. Also the Senate gave him for-life absolute power anyway, they cant do anything to him.

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 Před 6 lety +40

      He lied about *why* the Jedi tried to kill him. Understand that Palpatine was the leader of *both* sides of the Clone War, and as such he was a *traitor* to the Republic who gained both the office of Chancellor and emergency powers under false pretenses, allegedly in response to a rising civil war when *he* was the one who started it in his role as secret leader of the Separatists! This was *the* big secret that he could not allow to come out, even bigger than the fact that he was a Sith Lord, and which never did come out because so few people knew about it or could prove it.

    • @frankdees507
      @frankdees507 Před 6 lety +10

      Z L When Bail Organa got to the senate meeting, Padme said, the chancellors been talking about a plot by the Jedi to overthrow the republic. That was a total lie.

    • @HouseOfAlastrian
      @HouseOfAlastrian Před 6 lety +12

      His dictator for life 'emergency' powers had strings attached before he tricked the Senate into letting him dismantle the Republic and form the Empire. The Senate or the Security Council could have easily ordered the Clone Troopers to execute Order 65 and remove him from office at any time during the war and after. He would be unable to stop the Clone Troopers from carrying out that order, due to the mind control chips he had implanted in them all to ensure that they could not defy Order 66.
      That could be one of the reasons why he phased the Clone Troopers out and replaced them with the Stormtroopers. While there was still a Senate, there was still the danger that someone might know about Order 65 and convince the rest of the Senate to execute it empire-wide and there would be nothing Palpatine could do to stop them from carrying that order out. A heavily indoctrinated citizen army, on the other hand... they would just laugh in the Senate's faces if they received Order 65 and would probably not even know it ever existed as it would not be part of their training.

    • @loudboy317
      @loudboy317 Před 6 lety +4

      This begs to question...when exactly did the public realise that Palpatine lied about the Jedi? How did they figure out that it wasn't the Jedi who started the clone wars when it was actually him who orchestrated the whole thing? How did they know the real reason why the Jedi attacked Palpatine? It is strange to see the public go from giving "thunderous applause" to the Emperor TO wanting his head on a stick.

    • @OsnosisBones
      @OsnosisBones Před 6 lety +6

      The major issue with the prequels isnt so much the story it tells is bad but rather it tries to tell so much that 3 movies isnt really enough to do so well. Even more so due to it all being background stuff and not the major focus. This is a big part of why Clone Wars works so much better, because it can devote so much more time to the respective stories detailed in the movies.

Look at how quickly crowds gather on Coruscant itself to CELEBRATE the death of the Emperor.

The poster portrays Palpatine as he was before his scarring in the fight with Windu... despite this being decades later, meaning that the public may not have been aware of the extent of or permanent nature of the Emperors injuries during that battle.

    Kind of makes you think it was not the idea of ruling that enthralled Darth Sidious it was the immense power that he would get from ruling the galaxy that enthralled him. This is the very essence of the Sith, the Sith do not care about ruling and dealing with the technicalities and concessions of the galaxy, they only care about obtaining power, the idea and feel of power. That was probably why Darth Sidious was not interested in being in public life or in the political sphere unless it meant obtaining more power for himself. The whole purpose of the empire was to simply assure Darth Sidious that everyone and everything in the galaxy was brought into a state of order that would preserve his state of power and control of the galaxy. As far as the people are concerned, they either looked at Palpatine as a beloved ruler or an oppressive, psychotic, tyrant.

    I don't know if it really conflicts with this, but I always preferred to imagine that he did just fade away from public view. He had his Empire, and he wanted to strengthen and maintain it, but he had more important things that only he could do. He had mostly the right people in the right places, and properly arrayed in ways that they had to fight Rachel other, either to move into a position where they could try to assault him, or prove their worth, and climb the power structure. They also knew that certain things would fall apart without him, so some plans were never tried. He had Vader to deal with issues. He had agents to oversee things, and kept in contact with them just enough to keep them in place, but he could retire to deal with Sith things only he was capable of, and not worry much. If something happened, he was probably safe, and if he needed to, he could blame it on his underlings. That's me, at least.

While he was campaigning and acting as Chancellor of Weimar Germany, Hitler was significantly active in the public eye, but once he accomplished absolute power, he gradually faded from the public and rarely gave speeches or made public appearances. That was a not-very popular retcon implied or suggested in the New Jedi Order books. It's generally ignored; at best, he knew they were coming and made preparations, but based on what we actually see of him in the books and movies covering his rise to power, he clearly didn't know or care about the Yuuzhan Vong at all , or if he did it was well into his plans for conquest were already underway or even after he came to power. If he knew the Vong they were rivals to be eliminated; he did not create the Empire solely to defeat them.

    I always find it funny
    In Rebels and recent novels Rebels blame Palpatine for the Empires cruel acts, when he’s really isolated and let Empire rule itself through the Moffs and loosely the Senate
    We all know he’s evil, but how can he be blamed when he’s not really ruling, his cronies did do things in his name and there were times he did personally act out like creating trap for Rebel Spies on Coruscaunt, but how can Palpatine be blamed for what others did when he’s really isolated at his palace learning secrets of the Force
    Sure his crime in those aspects is appointing those criminals and turning a blind ear on the suffering of his people, but I really see people like Tarkin and Vader responsible for the Empires crimes mostly

    • @HouseOfAlastrian
      @HouseOfAlastrian Před 6 lety +4

      The reason the Rebel Alliance existed is the things he did BEFORE and DURING his becoming Emperor. He tricked the whole galaxy into electing him in response to a crisis that HE manufactured through his and his master's influence over the Trade Federation. Then he manipulated the whole galaxy into a war where HE led BOTH sides of it so that he could trick the Senate into granting him the emergency powers he needed to take full control. Finally, he lied to the Senate about the Jedi having a plot to take over the galaxy and that their attempt on his life was in service to that goal, as opposed to removing a dangerous Sith Lord and returning power to the Senate. And on that subject, he lied about being a Sith Lord. Sith have been the enemy of the Republic for thousands of years, and what was left of them after the events on Ruusan a thousand years ago are pretty much fugitives in the Republic.
      Palpatine is a criminal, a fraud, a member of an illegal organization and a traitor to the Republic. Everything else his cronies have done in his name are just extra reasons for the Rebels to overthrow the Empire. Don't forget that their formal name is "The Alliance to Restore the Republic". Even if the Emperor's hands are perfectly clean, overthrowing him is still the goal of the Rebels, as you can't have a Republic when it has an Emperor on the throne.

      General Coma that’s true and I agree he’s accountable for the deeds of his officials that did corruption and genocide in his name
      Still the Rebels made it as If he did it himself
      Like Alderaan there’s differing accounts how Palpatine responded, in one account he seemingly sadistically approved of it according to the New Hope Infinity Comic
      In Rise and Fall of Darth Vader Palpatine wasn’t notified at all, when Vader asked Tarkin that they should talk to him first, Tarkin scolded Vader and ordered him to go with it
      Other accounts say he was shocked when Alderraan was destroyed, as Alderaan was a Core World and a founder of Old Republic
      I have yet to see how he responded in Canon
      I just feel like that while yes he’s a demon, he’s demonized way too much more than his subordinates who really did the deeds
      Yes he’s accountable as he’s responsible for putting them there or created system that brought them there
      Still as I said the Rebels seemed to demonize him way too much, they were perfectly willing to assassinate him at Endor when they thought the Death Star II was incomplete when in other situations they capture other Imperial officials when possible

    Palps is a tragic figure IMHO, because if he hadn't killed his master Darth Plagueis, then immortality would have been his (especially since Plagueis saw him as an equal and loved researching the force more than running the politics - not that he wasn't good at it! Heego Damask (Plagueise's public persona!) was after all a financier of the first order, a person rich enough to afford whatever he wanted! - so Palpatine would have been just as powerful as he was after killing Plagueis, but Immortality kind of eluded him (even in the EU essence transfer and cloned bodies were only a stop-gap-measure after all!), especially since he didn't have his master's patience to study death and how to influence the midichlorians!)

    the problem with palpatine was this: 1: he wasn't willing to admit that there are things that he dosen't know. 2: he wasn't willing to admit that fear and harshness are not a sound basis for politics and management. 3 all combined, this could result only in demoralization within the empire and weaknesses that others could exploit within it and outside of it.

    Honestly, I think a lot of people would be afraid of him...
    But then, he used the disfigurement as a way to show the public what the Jedi did to him. He controlled the senate, the courts everything. So people would feel sorry for him, pity on him but additionally see his views as correct and as such side with him. So some of the public would view him as a hero. Additionally, at his age, for him to stay in power, people may question things. So I guess he took a back seat in that regard.
    For those who didn't side with him, well, there would be fear.

    • @HouseOfAlastrian
      @HouseOfAlastrian Před 6 lety

      Maybe not... but he still wouldn't want the people to see him as the bad guy. Hence his unassuming 'grandfatherly' statesman facade during the prequels. The Palpatine we see is a master of Machiavellian manipulation, and appearing to be the good guy is a major part of that... it's how he was able to woo Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side. It's how he convinced the entire galaxy that he only hesitantly accepted the emergency powers the Senate voted to him. It's how he turned Mace Windu's attempt at destroying a Sith Lord completely upside down into a nefarious Jedi plot to assassinate the Supreme Chancellor and overthrow the Republic.
      He cared enough about appearances of good and evil to carry all of that out. Framing himself as the victim of a malevolent Jedi conspiracy was the way to making absolute political power permanent. He had to make the Jedi look like the bad guys. Later on, he has to make the Rebel Alliance look like anarchic terrorists... to conflate senators like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa who want to legally restore democracy with murderous radicals like Saw Gerrera.

    I think the main thing that worked in Palpatines favor was that most people in the Empire had no idea what a Sith was and those that did believed them either extinct(as in the last publicly known one Dooku being killed) or a myth.
    Only the Jedi/some of the Clone troopers really understood what a Sith was.
    Probably the Hutt's with their long lifespan most of the Hutt's alive, great grandparents would have dealt with the old Sith Empire/s.(I am assuming they bother to remember their history, especially after their recent encounters with Dooku and Maul)
    Those and anyone who managed of escape Darth Vader.
