  • As we study the birth of Jesus in Luke 2, we learn about the events surrounding this special occasion, including the days leading up to Jesus' birth, Joseph and Mary's journey to Bethlehem, the angel's proclamation to the shepherds, and blessings from two people present at Jesus' dedication in the temple. Through these events recorded in Luke's gospel, we are reminded about God's sovereignty, Jesus' humility, and our salvation.
This teaching is from our series 42 Luke - 2014 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Albuquerque.

I respectfully disagree with your deduction that Simeon was an old man. Luke clearly specifies that 3 of the 4 specific individuals Mary has had contact with in Ch 1-2 are advanced in years. He emphasized this fact more than once with each person. Luke never states that Simeon is old. Luke does emphasize that Simeon was very in-tune with the Hosy Spirit-the Holy Spirit was upon Simeon, the Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon, and in the Spirit Simeon went to the temple. I believe that Simeon was so in tune with the Spirit that he knew he wouldn’t die until he had seen the consolation of Israel. His age is not relevant as Luke never mentioned it. If he were old, Luke would have followed his examples of saying that he was advanced in years. Why break tradition with this one individual sandwiched between other people whom Luke emphasized as being old.
