  • The Old Testament prophets wrote of a messenger who would prepare God’s people for the arrival of the long-promised Messiah. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul looks again at the song of the Benedictus in the gospel of Luke to see this prophecy’s fulfillment in John the Baptist.

    Today is December 24. Today is Christmas Eve. This passage from the Gospel of St. Luke is most likely going to be read in churches tonight. It can also be read on Christmas Day. Another Gospel that is usually read on Christmas Day is John 1:1-14. A beloved hymn that compliments this passage from St. Luke is "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come," written and probably composed by Martin Luther (1483-1546). And here is hoping that everyone reading this has a Merry Christmas.

    “do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
    All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
    “Behold, the virgin will be with child
    and will give birth to a son,
    and they will call Him Immanuel”e
    (which means, “God with us”)

    As a Christian, it upsets me he doesn’t even give a straight reading of Luke 2:1; Mary was never called “the betrothed wife of Joseph”, he’s giving the Hollywood version!
    “So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.”
    Mary wasn’t his wife yet when Jesus was born, the real Bible never says that!

    I notice he didn't cover the words of chapter 2 verse 10 where it says that the good tidings of great joy "shall be to all people". He couldn't cover the words "shall be to all people" because of his Calvinism. Calvinists believe that the good tidings are only for the elect. In other words the angels should have said "which shall be for the elect"! My Bible says "for all people"

    • @barryclevenger7456
      @barryclevenger7456 Před 2 lety +1

      Here it means all the people of Israel, not the Gentiles. I have a King James Study Bible that doesn't cover Luke 2:10 either but my ESV does.

    • @ericpickles149
      @ericpickles149 Před 2 lety +3

      @@barryclevenger7456 How do you know it means all the people of Israel? We should be careful with study notes, they are the work of men, not the infallible word of God. The text is clear, the Gospel is for all people, and we cannot restrict it to "the elect".

      Be careful what you assume here. That said, Calvinism IS biblical. God will have to illuminate it to you, otherwise you will be in your error in other doctrine as well.

    • @Mckaule
      @Mckaule Před 7 měsíci

      @@janvandestreek3366there are many false apostles who deny that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. If someone says, that Jesus is more than a 100% human being, is deceiver and antichrist. If people would accept that man Jesus is the Christ then all the places in the Bible which seems to be mysterious would become clear as day. All cults believe incarnation that Jesus is more than mere human being, they say he is angel incarnate like JW'S, they say he is God incarnate like Catholics and all the daughters of it, they say he's the lesser kind of God incarnate like gnostics.
