- Ever wonder what the upper limit of the shot put is? The record is 23.12 meters, or just under 75 feet. But could someone come along and put one even further? WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez met up with Olympic record holder Ryan Crouser to find out why putting a shot 24 meters is Almost Impossible.

Ryan Crouser is currently the best shot putter in the world. He broke the Olympic Record on all 6 of his attempts in Tokyo 2020 with his last throw hitting 23.30m. He also broke the outdoor world record, now standing at 23.37m. Furthermore broke the indoor world record. He constructed a new technique called: the Crouser slide, where he stands half a meter further in the circle to make more distance. He is incredible and will throw much further! Maybe someday 24 metres...
Edit: he broke the world record again in May 2023 to a distance of 23.57m. (Ryan Crouser also threw 23.12 and 23.31 at this competition) He was still lifting heavy weights and training hard so he is not at his best right now. Maybe at the world championships this year in Budapest, the 24 meter mark will be broken…

I've Always thought stuff like Ballet and Gymnastics should be a Requirement when it comes to certain sports, I think it helps them on a Number of Levels in their Game.

The female American gold medalist in the discus throw, Valarie Allman, is a former dancer. It definitely has a role in various sports. Several top NFL running backs participate in dance for that reason.
Actually he did ballet. Threw one lady 75 feet and lifted the other through the 2nd story roof. Sadly, Swan Lake was never the same.
Update: Ryan Crouser recently broke the world record in the Shot Put, and he also holds the olympic record too, in other words, he is the best shot putter that's ever lived.

23.12 meters to 23.37. Impressive but also nowhere near 24 meters. And this guy is a genetic freak born into a family of dedicated track and fielders who has been training since he was a little kid.
@@TacticusPrime 23.37 at age 28 is closer to 24 than anyone in history. David Clinging That doesn’t disregard that these videos are of high quality and do actually offer a good insight into the mechanics of the sport.
@David Clinging The exact point of these videos is to educate people about the sport and at how high level they're thus making world records rare and "almost impossible"
As it is likely that there are sports records that will not be broken usless we modify the parameters such as human augmentation or change of rules.
@David Clinging
More of figure of speech. Almost impossible implies it's possible, but slightly. Saying 24 meters is possible in the title sounds weird don't you think?
David Clinging I guarantee you the field goal sprinting and free throw line benchmark will not be broken in the next 30 years at least and the sprinting and field goal one probably never
@David Clinging bro pls run a sub 7 100m for me
Just shattered the WR.
Well Ryan just put humanity a quarter meter closer to that 24 meter mark. That's significant!
"Bench press 225..." huh thats not that much "....50 times in a row" ohhhhh.
Yeah lmao, I was like "oh I could totally do that if I trained a bit- oh, never mind then." Guy's an insane athlete.
I will tell you for real, that I did 43 reps on 225lbs once with my gym friends,. I was a power-lifter, they were body builders, and it was a mistake for all of us. Alex paid for his 34 reps with no arm movement for 30min afterward, and we were all sore for 1 full day after. Don't do it.
Funny thing is benching 225 50 times in a row is probably one of the lesser applicable activities (that involves weights) one can do for a power sport like shot put. Benching 1-5 reps is a lot better. I bet push pressing would be a great exercise as well.
Most elite shot putters have a max bench in the 500lb range. They generally have long arm levers, so aren't well suited for super high benching like powerlifters who tend to have shorter levers.
@@colerobbins124 them doing 225 is like regular people doing 100, they do need to shoot multiple times, so endurance is likely still important.

@@jeffburkholder8360 I'm a Sprinter and I have a lot of respect for throwers they are amazing athletes
I used to throw when I was around 17 (quit cuz my arm got messed up and cuz I'm too short to actually compete in higher levels) smell of iron and in your fingers and then nailing the technique felt awesome back in the day.
A note about ideal launch angle: 45 degrees is optimal when landing height is equal to launch height. In this case, where launch height is greater than landing height, the ideal angle is actually slightly less than 45 degrees, which could also explain why the optimal angle for shot put is between 35 and 40 degrees. Though, I'm sure the bio-mechanical explanation offered is at least as important if not far more important.
@ right so if you're stronger in the chest press direction than the shoulder press direction, it makes sense that your best throw might end up more in the chest press direction simply because it's stronger.
Also due to drag forces it's less than 45 degrees anyway closer to 40 degrees if I recall correctly. Note the shape of the object has an effect and since it's a round ball it's better than some things but it has a lot of surface area. If he can get the exact angle right I think that'll make quite the differene.
Exactly this. Ideal angle with release 2m above the ground (due to an extended arm) is ~42 degrees.
the angle also becomes lower than 45 if you count in air resistance.
Nah, air resistance should be negligible for release angle at these speeds and with such a heavy object. I've done the math to make sure and, even exaggerating the values to make it worse, the drag comes out to about 1 newton right at the start of the throw. That does very little to such a heavy weight on such a brief flight - it's a max acceleration of about 1.5% that of gravity.
HE IS 2020 OLYMPICS CHAMPION WITH A DISTANCE OF 23.30 METER.

I got the record for that year at my school years ago with 33’ 9”. And that was my last shot put of the season. I was locked at 31’ or 32’ so that was everything I had.
The only thing more difficult in athletics is the discus, because it literally rides on air to achieve its max length, like a wing. Discus uses the exact same rotation technique, but discus throwers are 1m90+ and weigh 100kg and yet must be lightning quick. Not many people are, obviously
