- So Risk of Rain 2 is pretty awesome, Risk of rain 1 is somewhat not so awesome, it honestly doesn't even feel like they're developed by the same people of Hopoo Games. Regardless, here's a nice 16 minute long video for you guys talking about why the series is so weird.

Risk of Rain 1 started out as a small school project for 2 students, eventually the 2 guys liked what they came up with so they put the game on Steam's old Greenlight platform. Eventually it launched and Risk of Rain 1 exploded in popularity. It was one of Steams bestsellers for years, the game even ported to consoles. And it is one of the 4 games out of hundreds that I own on steam that I have 100% steam achievment completion. 😁
It's a lot like Megaman or Castlevania and even Metroid Prime. RoR1 has very high difficulty especially at Monsoon setting, at which point it almost becomes Dark Souls genre. At which the game is the most epic to play at. To play it well, you need to learn enemy patterns, when to dodge what items to target build first, such as prioritizing stacking movement speed items. Because the faster you find and complete teleporter, the better. Hitting and running away is called kiting, and that's a core of any action roguelike platformer. And you apply that tactic mostly just in beginning of your runs. But that's not all there is to it. You can stack same items nearly infinitely and some players choose to complete their runs purely chasing after specific ones instead of spelunking entire map for each and every one which will inevitably kill you anyhow. Alas, RoR1 is not a cup of tea for everyone. I personally cashed in about 120 hours played in Risk of Rain 1 back in 2013/14. It's such an excellent roguelike with a pinch of throwback to 90's classics. Oh and not to mention Risk of Rain 1 music. That music is godly and partly what hooked me in.
Hey thanks for sharing your thoughts, that is a really good point about the depth of the game being much more prevalent than I gave it credit for, but I think my issue comes more from the core elements of the combat. The game just has no momentum to me, which is mainly due to the default movement speed, but it's also how long it takes to kill enemies, and elements to the boss fights as well.
And in consideration to the point about kiting, it's cool how the rogue like community has donned these actions with words, but I just feel like kiting is not a fun mode of combating enemies. There's not much variety in it, and it's very restrictive to me.

@@BenEleven1127 Aye, this video was quite entertaining to watch, you have a good sense of humor albeit a bit negative,(understandably i.e being a student in debt isn't fun) but still entertaining! However, I reckon you're gonna get more hate than subs/likes if you're just gonna continuously bash and talk about obvious cons of an old but beloved modern classic game that has sold over 3 million copies during its prime. 😂

And yeah I'm not a big fan of the scathing way projected my voice and how I wrote the script in this video But it's ok cause I've learned from it and I'm trying to be a bit more constructive with my criticisms, while also being entertaining. I just wanted to get my thoughts out there as to why I find the comparison of these two games to be night and day.
