How to perform the classic minus world trick in Super Mario Bros. on NES! #nintendo #supermario #shorts #supermariobros #nes #snes #famicom #retrogames #retrogaming #fyp
i think everyone forgets that it’s not generally the japanese version of super mario bros that the minus world is different. the japanese cartridge version is the same as the american version, but the disk version (one showed in the video, referenced as japanese version) since memory is different on the disk, it’s different. Yes there’s both a japanese cartridge and a japanese famicom disk version of this game, and the disk version has a different minus world, not the “japanese version” in general.
@@jessemiller2335 they're literally just repeating what you said for no reason. "Disc version different, cartridges are the same." Idk why people insist on doing this everywhere on CZcams. Contribute nothing new and repeat what they just read.
It's not just any Japanese version. The Japanese version came out on both the Famicom, the Japanese NES, as a cartidge, and the Famicom Disk System attachment, as a disk. The Famicom cartridge version is the NES version, and that one has the same minus world as the US release. The disk version has memory arranged differently, and that's why its minus world is different.
fun fact: it’s actually not a coincidence (warning: super nerdy stuff ahead) the game needs to figure out where to send mario when he enters a warp zone pipe, but it doesn’t know where, since the warp zone isn’t loaded yet. for some reason, it defaults to the warp zone at the end of 4-2 (the underground one, not the overworld vine one), which only has a world 5 pipe in the center. because of how warp zones were coded, they had to set some value to where the left and right pipes would lead to even though they don’t exist, but they didn’t want anything to appear there, so they made a blank rule (with id 36, or hex 24 if you’re nerdy) and told the game that the nonexistent left and right pipes were for world 36. however, they weren’t anticipating that people could load the data from that 4-2 warp zone in a warp zone with three pipes, so they didn’t code world 36 to be anything in particular. this resulted in it pointing to a random place in the game’s memory, which so happened to be the data for 2-2/7-2 (which are actually stored as one level; the game marks some enemies to only spawn after world 4 which is how 1-3/5-3, 2-4/5-4, 1-4/6-4, 2-2/7-2, and 2-3/7-3 can be stored in the same place), or in the case of the fds version, a version of 1-3/5-3 (i think) with different enemy and color pallet data. (-2 is 2-3/7-3 with 7-3 enemies of course, and -3 is 4-4 with underground pallet and enemy data from somewhere idk)
One most ppl don't know about is in SMB3. There's 7 secret levels where u have to beat the levels with an exact amount of coins... and a WHITE MUSHROOM HOUSE will appear. The kind that give gifts. But there's only one box, and Toad isn't there. One of the gifts is the 3rd warp whistle
@@joethebro yeah idk why I thought that lol my bad...the last whistle is another secret in world 2, the sand world desert land... most people don't know about the hammer bros and hammer gift... and the certain rock at top to get to the special hidden spot.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. The secret white mushroom houses only contain P-wings and anchors depending on whether the world is an odd or even number. The third warp whistle is in world 2 beyond the breakable boulder after defeating the fire brothers. Try playing the game before posting stupid bs.
The minus world is actually world 36. The tiles that show the world number is stored in a spritesheet so once it goes over number tiles, it starts with the next tile in the sheet. The tile for world 36 is a blank tile so yeah
Happened to me once. Not with mario, but i was using a bootleg cartridge with 4 games in total (teenage mutant ninja turtles games) and on the menu screen where they show all the games I randomly pressed some buttons on the controller and I don't know what happened but the text changed to red and the game names changed to dragon something. Shit was weird. Could never replicate it again but I know it was real and not some kind of a dream
I'll never forget when I managed to get this to work as a child. It was incredibly exciting and I took pictures of it (Polaroids). I never got the damn thing to work again.
Super Mario World had that since the secret Star World led to the even more secret - and much harder - Special World. There was also an instance in Donkey Kong Country where one secret room led to another secret room, and only Donkey Kong could unlock it.
I was unaware you could do this trick without ducking. I still remember I was in second grade when I saw this trick on TV before school. I had to wait the whole day to get home and try it. It was all I could think about. Such a classic.
You don't have to break any When you move in mario, you move in subpixels, but collision happens on a pixel level. One subpixel is 1/16 of a pixel, and mario moves 5? Subpixels. When walking. Anyways mario gets pushed out of a block 1 pixel per frame. This means that sometimes mario clips a pixel into a block. Now if you jump so that mario lands in between two blocks, he will clip into the block. But now, if mario is crouching, his head will go up since the game thinks he's landed on something. This means that the game starts pushing him right, and if you start running, you can clip into the wall completely. So you don't need to break any bricks, you just need to have a brick above your head when you'll be clipping.
Fun fact! There's more than just one minus world! It was found that only on the Famicom there was a tennis game that you could put in before Mario Bros, and depending on how many steps you took in that game when you switched over to Mario and did the minus world glitch it resulted in a different minus world.
If you move slowly and enter it at the earliest possible point without ending the glitch, you can go into the middle pipe for a whole different set of minus worlds…
Well a spoiler if you time correctly from the second bar going up you can go up on the wall without needing to break but ideally works when you are small
That's how I was taught to reach the warp zone back in the 80s, except you only broke the 2nd to last block and jumped forward. It wasn't until YT came along that I learned you could just run across the top lol.
There’s actually more levels like these. Digits 1-256, but you need a game genie to access these lost levels. Although if you have a tennis cart and a single cart of SMB1 you can. 1. Put in SMB 1 and start the game. 2. Pull out SMB 1 and replace it with tennis without powering off the console. 3. Press reset 4. Start the game and play and take at least 9 footsteps. 5. Put back back in SMB 1 reset, hold a then start.
I haven't played Mario like this as I'm 15, but my dad has. I like seeing videos on it because it let's me have something to talk about with him when I play the game with him, and I think he likes it
Fun fact: the minus world is actually world 36 This isn’t the normal Japanese version it’s the Famicom disk system version that’s stored on some kind of floppy disk that has this version of the minus world.

Thx for clearing that up, thought it sounded strange
It's for FDS(Famicom Disk System). Cartriges are showing the same output, no matter the region.

It's actually not world -1, it's world 36-1. It's just that the symbol used to display the number 36 is coincidentally a blank space.

No need to break any bricks at all
