      Ripper 30 The swearing isn't a problem, from a translation problem. if you had any rudimentary knowledge of Japanese, you would understand that the way the main cast speaks (except for Kurama) is considered very rude by conventional Japanese standards. if you think the show shouldn't have cursing is because it's supposed to be a cartoon for kids, it isn't. Not only is there plenty of killing, but this show also has just a bit of smoking, drinking, and sex. If the audience can deal with the subject matter, foul language shouldn't be a problem. As far as DBZ was concerned, Funimation originally wanted it to be watched by the same people that watched Pokemon, so of course the language, violence, and sexuality would be toned down.

    • @Von_D
      @Von_D Před 7 lety +5

      Ripper 30 Genkai still gets called an old lady (*ahem* "Grandma") in Japanese. As far as Koenma is concerned, not everyone addresses him as "Lord Koenma" in Japanese either. Same thing with the voices. Only Yusuke sounds like an actual teen out of the main cast.

    I think that if you were listening to the sub and were a native speaker you may pick up on more emotion than those of us who don't speak Japanese.
    However, what Id like to point out is the direction that this scene was taken. You can really hear the pain in Yusuke. When he tries to stand up, in Japanese he is hurt but you dont get much more than that. In English his screams carry through letting you know just how horrible it is what he's going through.
    Not to mention I'm sure Sabat had some input here because of the DBZ like screams that follow through to the end too, which are really impactful after hearing the pain in Yusuke.
    The perfect scene.

      while that might be true, at this point in the test he had also spent hours upon hours (don't remember the exact amount of time, but it may have even been over a day, can't say) being tortured by the pain, so the sub showcases the exhaustion and how much yusuke has just straight up given up. I was drunk one night after finishing hxh in 2014 and for some crazy unfathomable reason decided to rewatch this show in dub After already watching it subbed years ago.
    Now, I'm someone you might call a "sub elitist" and I genuinely dislike dubs, I've tried the dubs people praise, I've seen the bebop's and hellsing ultimate's and fmab's and while they're not terrible I'm someone that always prefers the original. Well... except for yu yu hakusho.
    I ended up watching 10 episodes that night and while a lot of background characters had some pretty bland delivery I was suprised with how much I enjoyed yusuke and botan in English, it almost felt wrong to me in a way. As I continued watching the show I found these characters to be so much more engaging than I remembered and that's when I realized the dub had been changing lines and somehow instead of doing the thing where dubs change lines and ruin scenes these script changes were actually ENHANCING character motivations and whole conversations. To this day I have never seen a dub like yu yu hakusho that actually changes the script for the better. The sub is still solid but with it I feel like I'm just watching another fun shounen battle anime where in the dub I feel like I'm watching a fun shounen battle anime with actual real teenagers in it saying things real kids would say. Nozomu Sasaki's portrayal of yusuke is still awesome but honestly justin cook was born to voice yusuke, his sarcastic quips and badass comments give me goosebumps.
    This hasn't changed my opinion on dubs as a whole as I still prefer my anime in it's original format but I cannot deny the fact the yu yu hakusho dub injects so much personality in the series and I honestly prefer it, something I never thought I'd say. It can be a little slower in the begining as the cast finds their groove but the quality of later episodes truly makes it worth it, If I ever rewatch it again it will be in dub for sure.
    Ps I thought kuwabara's dub voice was hilarious and he really sold it as a tough guy goofball with a heart of gold though I can admit I wasn't a big fan at the begining. Botans voice is cute as hell, hiei is a prick in the best way possible and kurama is just next level soothing and calculated. Yusuke is the best though).

    I will admit the dub sounds really good. Especially right here (Dub wins here) But I just like how the sub is a more honest depiction of Yusuke, Yusuke is witty and confrontational but he’s not supposed to be this cool guy with the perfect one liners every time which is what most ppl from that watch dub enjoy. I get it, but Yusuke is a 14 year kid who has a strong personality but also someone struggles that with self confidence at least in the original manga and sub.

    Dub...Hands...down! The sub is great. Don't get me wrong (especially when Luffy's Japanese VA is in it 😇). But I feel that most of the characters are more believable and realistic in the dub version. There are a few characters in the dub that are a bit too ridiculous, such as Jin and Chu. But I actually think they are funnier in the dub despite their clearly outlandish accents. XD
