What if Robert Horry Didn't Hip Check Steve Nash

- Robert Horry's career has been defined by clutch shots. Afterall, his nickname is 'Big Shot Bob'. In Game 4 of the 2007 western conference semifinals between the Suns and Spurs, Horry connected on another big shot. Only this one wasn't a jumper. It was a hip check that might've swung the outcome of the entire Playoffs. In Episode 6 of the series 'What If', Chris Miles looks at what might've happened had Horry's hip check never occurred
Robert horry has so many moments in his playoff career that altered nba history and HOF players legacies . Crazy to think of
nba: Literally bodies steve nash but its fine
nba: nah stoudemire was on court that not right 1 game suspension
The Spurs lost like 6 points for game 5, the Suns like 30 in game 5 because of Horry. He will always be the biggest shitbag of the NBA.

There are a lot of layers to this story. Nash was stoudemire’s mentor both on and off the court. Stoudemire battled some serious demons as a young man and His close friendship with Nash meant a lot to him, so it’s fair to say stoudemire was beyond incensed to see his buddy flagrantly hip checked into the scorer’s table. His reaction was perfectly natural and completely spontaneous. Stern could have and should have intervened to annul the suspension.
Spurs lost 6 points per game, Suns lost 30+.
Yeah, but this was back in 2007 and I guess they didn't see Black athletes as human, so they never considered that. There was no ill intent from Amare, and he was like 90% on the sideline holding the rest of his team back. Horry had history with the Suns anyways ... in 1997 he was a member of the Suns and had played 32 games with the team after being acquired through a trade that shipped Sir Charles off to Houston. Due to personal history between Horry and the new head coach of the Suns, Danny Ainge, Horry threw a towel at Ainge and was subsequently sent to the Lakers.
How many brawls happened in the NBA and players leaving the bench yet not all were suspended.

Everyone saying it wasn’t the spirit of the rule. Agreed but they didn’t technically break the rule either. According to VP of officiating, “you can’t leave the bench during an altercation.” Well, check the tape, the “altercation” if you want to call it that (arguably didn’t even rise to that level) happened well AFTER Amare and Boris left the bench. Can’t “leave” the bench during and altercation if you’re not actually there when it started. They went over to help/check Nash and just got unlucky that an altercation later broke out while off the bench. By that logic, just start on altercation while a previously sitting LBJ is now on the court during a timeout high fiving players coming back to the bench and he’s gone for next game. (Best to Save this move for a game 6 with a game 7 pending).
I'm a long time Suns fan. Steve Kerr said it best, we're looking for a little common sense in a situation like this. I've never been convinced that Phoenix would have won the series if Amare and Boris weren't suspended. Maybe they would have...maybe not. However, the suspensions guaranteed they wouldn't win game 5. I think both Suns and Spurs fans would have rather had the series decided on the court without controversy than have this question linger. Of course, San Antonio won the championship so their fans probably don't think about it as much as Suns fans do.
I think it sucks but the more disciplined team won. They wouldn’t have to worry about getting suspended if they had a higher basketball IQ.
Absolutely it definitely cost them. The fix was n
Thanks a lot Greg Anthony
So, Horry absolutely bodies Nash into the table, but Phoenix gets penalized and loses the series for it. Damn, everybody should start body checking people during the playoffs. Just dig out your bench and get some people suspended by using them as free fouls.
Amazing how that works, right? And then you get to gloat to everyone how good you were to win the championship that year while the team that genuinely deserved to win that year gets written off
Exactly, that's the message the NBA was sending when they did this.
I love how everyone conveniently forgets that Horry got ejected and suspended the rest of the series. Diaw and Amar’e were suspended for ONE game. this is for everyone that doesn't believe Nikola Jokic should be suspended for (ironically) what happened with Ishbia. The rules - whether you like them or not - are the rules. Players can't leave the bench and touch the court and players can't leave the court and initiate contact with spectators. It's that simple. The Suns were hosed but it was the rule. If the Nuggets get hosed (should be) then it's because it IS the rule. I don't know how else to describe it.
The Suns win a ring simple. What the hell's LeBron gonna do them with freakin Drew Gooden and Anderson Varejao?
They really suspended him for that? Kinda soft honestly
It was a rule created in reaction to the "Malice at the Palace" incident in 2004. The NBA was suffering a big image problem after that debacle and created the rule that if a player left the bench during an "altercation", it was an automatic suspension. It seems like a knee-jerk reaction now, but the players knew the rule and some of them still broke it.
Those rules were bogus and so were the suspensions handed out to the Kmicks in 1997 after PJ Brown flipped over Charlie Brown
